COMMUNITY NEWS2

COVID-19 Safety UpdateOn the 27 of April, the Department of Education published its latest “Operations Guide”. There are no major changes in the long run.

Students and staff should continue to be vigilant and remain home if unwell.

Hand hygiene remains one of the critical measures to limit the spread of COVID-19. Hands should be cleaned with an alcohol-based hand sanitiser or washed with soap and water for 20 seconds. Hand sanitiser is available at entries to the school and in classrooms.

Students and staff are encouraged to cough or sneeze into their elbow or a tissue.

Physical distancing is encouraged where possible and density limit of 1 person per 2 square metres implemented in office spaces and areas generally accessed by the public, such as reception.

Congestion within the school and at entry points should be avoided.

Individuals aged 12 years and over (inclusive of staff, students and visitors) must always carry a face mask – unless they have a lawful exemption.

Individuals aged 12 years and over must wear a face mask when on public transport, school buses and when in taxis or ride share vehicles – unless they have a lawful exemption.

There are a number of lawful excuses for not wearing a face mask, including for staff and students who are unable to wear a face mask due to the nature of their disability. This includes students or staff who have a medical condition, such as a breathing problem, a serious skin condition on the face, or a mental health condition.

When physical distancing cannot be maintained between individuals aged 12 years and over e.g. during a school performance, information night, meeting etc. we will be requesting that they wear a mask (unless they have a lawful exemption lawful exemption whilst in an enclosed space such as the Nalleijerring Performance Centre.

Record keeping for contact-tracing purposes will be undertaken during such events. We will be using the free Victorian Government QR Code Service for attendees to ‘Check-In’ on arrival.

Of particular interest is the changes to the collection of student contact details on excursions/camps for contact-tracing.

Excursion venues are responsible for managing record keeping for contact tracing in line with current public health directives.

Most venues are required to use electronic record keeping that connects with an Application Programming Interface (API) linked provider or a digital system provided by Services Victoria.

An electronic or hard copy list of student names and contact numbers should be provided to the venue at the time of the excursion. Students are not required to individually check-in at the venue on the day.

The Department of Health has strongly recommended that a contact number for each individual student (as per the student’s school file) is provided to venues for recording purposes. If providing a private contact number for a student poses a serious privacy risk, or the number is unknown, the school’s 24-hr contact number may be used, but this should be the exception.

The Parent Consent form has been updated to advise parents/carers/guardians that, when required, schools will be providing excursion/camp venues with contact details for students for contact-tracing purposes.

I will keep you informed of further updates.

I ask all parents/guardians to support students to present for the tests each day and on time.

We are confident that the students will approach the tests with the seriousness that they deserve and whilst these tests only provide a snapshot of student performance, they are nevertheless a valid body of data that when triangulated with other data that the schools collects will create a more realistic picture of student learning growth as well as areas for improvement. In turn, this will assist the school to identify the best support strategy to enhance your child’s learning.

Please do not withdraw your child(ren) from being involved in the tests or any components of the tests which would make the test invalid.

A new feature of the NAPLAN assessment is being launched this year, with the award of Year 9 Certificates of Achievement.

The new certificates aim to celebrate and recognise the importance of both excellence and learning growth.

Beginning in 2021, Year 9 students who achieve outstanding results or who significantly improve their results in NAPLAN tests will receive a NAPLAN Certificate of Achievement.

The certificates will be awarded for two categories of achievement:

* Category one: the achievement of excellence through getting a result in the top band for reading or numeracy, or both.

* Category two: the achievement of outstanding learning growth through improvement by two or more bands between the NAPLAN Year 7 and Year 9 tests for reading or numeracy, or both.

For more information about the new certificate and measures for learning growth, refer to Year 9 NAPLAN certificates of achievement on the Department’s website.

Eltham Drama Performance:I congratulate all the students who last week performed in the productions of “She is Fire” and “Backstroke”.

Both productions were amazing and clearly highlighted the talents of our Drama students.

I am sorry if you missed out on being part of the audience for two incredible performances. However, there will be other times in the future for you to indulge in the experience.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT 2021 Student Attitudes to School Survey (AtoSS) We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of their school.

The AtoSS is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist your child’s school to gain an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Students will be asked about their thoughts and feelings in relation to their school, their learning, peer relationships, bullying and life in general.

There are also some questions about student health and wellbeing. Understanding health and wellbeing needs is important to support students to learn and thrive at school. The Department is providing this addition to the core survey to allow your child’s school to capture this information to support students.

Students will be asked about resilience, family relationships, community connections, health (including mental health), access to health services and physical activity.

This year, the AtoSS will be conducted at school over the period 17 May – 4 June.

Further information will be provided to families closer to the date via a letter sent to families through Compass.

JUNIOR SCHOOL Junior School NewsIt’s been wonderful for so many of us to have had the chance to meet our Year 7 families through the Student Progress Interviews. The feedback that we receive and provide through these opportunities is invaluable in supporting the work that we do here in Junior School.

We’ve been working our way through the Feedback on Transition into Year 7 2021 - Term 1 data that was collected at the end of last term. If you haven’t had a chance to complete this survey and would still like to share your feedback, the link is available here:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7RMYLHB

In some of the interviews, time management and organisation will have been raised as a goal for Term 2. Our Smart not Scattered program will run on Mondays at lunchtime this term. This club is designed to assist students with planning and organisation. Where parents believe that their young person would benefit from some time in this club, they are encouraged to recommend that they attend. Where teachers think that a student would benefit from being part of this session, they will be referred. Our goal is to support all Year 7s to stay on top of their tasks and learn to plan and manage their time effectively.

Smart not Scattered is only one of the lunchtime opportunities running this term. A full list of clubs is available in Junior School for students looking to meet new friends and try new things this term.

One new club this term is our AFL Club which began on Friday – facilitated by the AFL Development Officers, 40 students took part in football drills. Feedback from this session was great! We look forward to seeing how this new initiative develops this year.

Our Year 7s have hit the ground running in term 2 with confidence and enthusiasm with so much going on, it’s fantastic to see the ways in which our youngest students are engaging with all that is on offer.

SPORT Intermediate Soccer TournamentOn Wednesday, the Intermediate Soccer Team made their way to St Helena for a series of round robin matches.

The team was triumphant in their first match, beating Montmorency 4-0 with two goals to Jardi Sinclair (Year 10, Rutter House) and one a piece to Nha Hoang (Year 9, Andrew House) and Phillip Gidley (Year 9, Rutter House). In their second match against St Helena, the team lifted to another level; especially in light of the massive home-ground advantage to St Helena as the game took place during the school’s lunchtime. Early in the first half, Phillip Gidley silenced the crowd with a clinical finish from the edge of the box. Jardi Sinclair doubled the lead with a composed finish following a saved penalty. Following a tense second half, the game ended with Eltham 2-0 victors.

It was an incredible effort from all students involved. A special mention to captain Giles Frewin-Macfarlane (Year 10, Stewart House), who shored up the defence, and to Jardi Sinclar and Henry McKay (Year 9, Everard House) who pulled the strings in the midfield. Now on to Regionals!

STUDENT GROWTH AND LEADERSHIP Banyule Youth Summit - 2021The Banyule Youth Summit will be held on Tuesday, May 18 2021. It will be held at the Heidelberg Gold Club in Lower Plenty. Eltham High School is proud to have four student representatives that will be involved in guiding the direction of aspects of Banyule Council for the next two years.

Prior to the Summit, Nicholas Makridis (Year 11, Stewart House), May Henry (Year 11, Everard House), Manu Ranganathan (Year 12, Everard House) and Teyanah Brown (Year 11, Rutter House), Eltham High School student leaders, met with Lisa Said, Banyule Youth Outreach Team Leader, in a workshop. At this workshop students were able to identify the issues they wanted to take to the Summit. In this way, topics and teams were pre-identified and the time at the Summit was used more efficiently.

“Over 100 young people will attend the Summit and will engage in passionate discussion around topics of interest to them. A series of recommendations will be presented to a packed house of supporters of young people. Council voiced their commitment to working with young people and community partners to ensure the proposed recommendations were put into action.”

After the Summit, the report containing the recommendations from the Summit will be presented to Council. The report will hopefully be adopted.

The pictures show Lisa Said with our students and the students beginning their brainstorm.

Students don’t have to be good at art to join. If they enjoy making and creating and would like to make some new friendships this could be the group for them.

Our Visual Arts Leaders along with Arts staff have planned some fun activities and will be on hand to teach students some new skills or just have a chat.

The Art Club will run every Thursday lunchtime.

If you have any questions contact Lisa Foote [email protected]
