1. PARTALL Coverall FilmPARTALL Coverall Film is the nonhazardous, environmentally friendly PVA parting film that protects mold and plug sur-faces during part cure or when wax releases alone are not enough. Nonhazardous, nonflammable and very low volatileorganic content (VOC) that can aid in emissions compliance. 50% higher solids content than traditional PVA. Spray, wipe, dip, roll or brush on application. Self-leveling formulation for class “A” finishes. Removed by peeling up or rinsing with water.

2. PARTALL Film #10PARTALL Film #10 is the original green PVA parting film for separation between polyester, epoxy and other thermosetresins and various mold and plug surfaces. PARTALL Film #10 is easily removed when molding is complete by simplypeeling up or rinsing away with water. Excellent wet-out without voids, separation or fisheyes and fast drying. Formulatedfor spray application. Works as a surface cure agent for air-inhibited gel coat repairs by sealing out atmospheric moisture. The industry standard since 1953.

5. PARTALL One-Coat PVA

REXCO is the leading manufacturer of PVA film-forming solutions (parting films) forcomposites in North America. These solvent-resistant yet water-soluble films areused as a chemical barrier to protect mold surfaces and to aid in de-molding of FRP/GRP and cast polymer parts or molds from plugs. Typically used in conjunction withwaxes during mold building, the manufacture of “one-offs,” or in regular on-goingproduction where extra mold protection is required. Also used as a surface cureagent for polyester gelcoat repair and with cast methyl methacrylate acrylics; to giveelastomeric urethane, silicone or RTV molds longer life through reduction of me-chanical abrasion during demolding and chemical attack from resins; as a maskingagent in use with epoxy and other adhesives and sealants; and as a spray boothcoating to aid in the removal of overspray buildup, and for the storage and protectionof out of service molds and parts. Simple, effective, economical.

3. PARTALL 101 & 103 PVA Parting Films

PARTALL One-Coat is a nonhazardous, high viscosity solvent-free protective PVAcoating. Use as a parting agent for composites molding, a masking film for graph-ics, a temporary carrier solution for minerals and ideal as a parting film when mak-ing rigid support shells for elastomeric molds. Highest solid content for fast buildup and thicker dry film. Easily removed by peeling or rinsing with warm water.

PARTALL 101 & 103 PVA Parting Films combine PVA, water, and isopropyl alcohol for better layout when applied to hotmolds and reduction of cob-webbing in less than ideal environments. Liquid solution cures to a thin and flexible dry filmbarrier that is resistant to solvents found in thermoset resins and many solvent based adhesives and paints. Dry film may bepeeled off or dissolved with water when removal is necessary. Commonly used as a parting agent for separation betweenpolyester, vinylester and epoxy resins and various mold or plug surfaces or as a masking film or barrier (frisket) to preventmigration of solvent-based adhesives or sealants during application. PARTALL 101 or PARTALL 103 Parting Films maybe used as temporary carriers for suspending various dry ingredients on substrates.

PARTALL Coverall Film is a nonflammable water-based, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coating comprised of non-hazardous, filmforming materials. The dry PVA film is resistant to the solvents in the resin system used for composites parts manufacturebut is soluble in water. It is particularly recommended as a parting agent for separation between polyester or epoxy resinsand various mold surfaces but may be used with most thermoset resins. PARTALL Coverall Film is not recommended foruse with resins containing water or giving off water during cure (i.e., phenolics).

After part casting PARTALL Coverall Film parts easily from the mold surface and is readily dissolved from molded parts andspray equipment with water. For most composite casting processes PARTALL Coverall Film is used over wax or othermold release agents and renewed for each part casting.

Porous molds (i.e., plaster or wood) should first be sealed with lacquer or similar coating. Composites grade sealers andfairing compounds are recommended. Apply mold release wax to mold or plug surfaces according to instructions and polisheach coat to a shine. Choose PARTALL Paste #2, FORMULA FIVE Mold Release Wax, or PARTALL Hi-Temp Waxaccording to process requirements.

depending on ambient temperature and humidity. On new or reconditioned molds dry film thickness should be 2 - 4 mils(50 - 100 micrometers), about the thickness of an industrial-type trash bag. 1 - 2 mils (25 - 50 micrometers) is recom-mended on seasoned molds. PARTALL Coverall Film will exhibit a white foamy appearance when freshly sprayed but willdry to a clear coat. Film should not sag or contain runs when applied. If application flaws appear in PVA film wash off withwater and begin again. Make certain that PARTALL Coverall Film is completely dry before proceeding with moldingprocess. Film should be very smooth and glossy when dry. A dull, hazy or grainy film may result from too thin a PVA filmfrom insufficient spray - spray PVA to wet look. If spray air bubbles are trapped in PVA film try higher air pressure. One gallon(3.79 liters) covers about 400 square feet (40 m2).

Non-Flammable Primary Application: Release agent for use with unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy resins. Gas Density: High barrier characteristic against nearly all common gases makes PVA an ideal surface cure agent forair-inhibited resins such as polyester gel coats and cast methyl methacrylate acrylics. Solvent stability against nearly all organic solvents, oils and fats. Solvent resistant yet water soluble. Dry film temperature resistance up to 300 ºF (149 ºC). Application temperature preferred 70 – 80 ºF (21 – 27 ºC) @ 50% relative humidity. Ambient or substrate temperaturesabove 100 ºF (38 ºC) may cause wet film separation or cob-web defects.

The best procedure for separating parts from a mold depends on the size and shape of the part. In mostcases a part can be lifted from the mold after loosening around the edges. Injecting compressed air betweenthe part and mold at the edge is sometimes useful. On difficult or large parts it may be helpful to introducewater between mold and part to dissolve the PVA parting film helping to float the part free. PVA parting filmgenerally comes off with the part and will need to be renewed on the mold for each part.

PARTALL 101 PVA Parting Film is a solution of polyvinyl alcohol polymer (PVA/PVOH), water and alcohols. The use of isopropyl alcohol makes this PVA solution well suited for application to hot elastomeric molds. Thisliquid solution cures to a thin and flexible dry film through the evaporation of water and alcohol resulting in a dryfilm barrier that is resistant to solvents found in thermoset resins and many adhesives and sealants. The dryfilm may be peeled off or dissolved with water when removal is necessary. It is commonly used as a partingagent for separation between polyester, vinylester and epoxy resins and various mold or plug surfaces or as amasking film or barrier (frisket) to prevent migration of solvent-based adhesives or sealants during application.PARTALL 101 may also be used as a temporary carrier for suspending various dry ingredients on substrates.

PARTALL 101 PVA Parting Film parts easily from non-porous substrates and is readily dissolved from moldedparts and spray equipment with water. The most common methods of application as a parting film for thermo-set composites is spraying, wiping with sponge or cloth, brushing or rolling, or flooding and draining excess onsurfaces prepared with mold release wax. In some applications PVA Parting Films are used as stand-aloneseparating films or barriers.

Porous surfaces (e.g.- plaster or wood) should be dry and first sealed with lacquer or similar coating followedwith one or more coats of a durable mold release wax such as PARTALL Paste #2 buffed to a high gloss.Waxes containing high levels of silicone such as automotive wax should be avoided as they can create sepa-ration or pin holes in the PVA film. Best practice is to allow residual solvents to out-gas from mold release waxfor at least one hour prior to application of PVA.

PARTALL 101 PVA Parting Film is ready to use as received. No mixing or agitation is necessary. For bestcosmetic results spray with HVLP gun using a fluid orifice of 1.8 – 2.2 mm diameter with air pressure at thegun at 20 – 30 PSI (1.5 – 2.0 BAR). Adjust to create an elongated vertical oval pattern of 8 – 10 inches (20 –25 cm) in height. Normal spraying distance is 12 – 16 inches (30 - 40 cm) from substrate.

For hot elastomeric molds apply a mist coat of PARTALL 101 PVA Parting Film to mold surface followed by atleast two flow coats. Allow each coat to dry completely before proceeding. Dry film thickness should be at least2 - 4 mils (50 – 100 µm) on new or reconditioned molds and 1 - 2 mil (25 – 50 µm) on seasoned molds. A10 mil (250 µm) wet film will result in about a 1 mil (25 µm) dry film once water and alcohol have evaporated. One gallon (3.79 liters) will cover about 400 ft² (40 m²). In hot and dry climates alcohols may cause theatomized stream to dry prior to arrival at substrate creating cob webbing. This may be overcome by dilutingPARTALL 101 with up to 10% distilled water.

Do not begin casting or molding parts until surface is completely dry. Drying time is approximately 15 minutesfor mist coats and 30 minutes for flow coats depending on ambient temperature, humidity and wet film thick-ness. A spray density that allows the liquid to flow together and form a continuous film without creating drips orruns on vertical surfaces or pooling on horizontal surfaces is ideal. Film should be very smooth and glossywhen dry. A dull film may result from insufficient spray and indicate an inadequate protective covering, porosityor pinholes.

PARTALL One-Coat is a water-based Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) coating comprised of water-soluble, film form-ing materials. Commonly used as parting film between polyester, vinylester or epoxy resins and various moldsurfaces or as a release barrier when making rigid support shells for elastomeric rubber molds. Also specifiedas an anti-mutilation coating for aircraft windshields. PARTALL One-Coat contains 2 – 3 times the solidscontent of standard PVA giving it a thick viscosity that builds quickly. The solvent-resistant dry film releaseseasily from mold or part surface or application equipment. Removal is by peeling off in a continuous skin or bydissolving with water and scrubbing with a soft bristle brush or sponge. Warm water aids removal.

NON-HAZARDOUS, NON-FLAMMABLE

Porous surfaces (e.g.- plaster or wood) should be dry and first sealed with lacquer or similar coating followedwith one or more coats of a durable mold release wax such as PARTALL Paste #2 buffed to a high gloss.Waxes containing high levels of silicone such as automotive wax should be avoided as they can create sepa-ration or pin holes in the PVA film. Best practice is to allow residual solvents to out-gas from mold release waxfor one hour prior to application of PVA.

PARTALL One-Coat is ready to use as received for most purposes but may be diluted with clean water up toa ratio of 1:1 to suit application method. Normally applied over mold release wax such as PARTALL Paste #2or FORMULA FIVE Mold Release Wax although may be used as a stand alone mold release. Safe for all non-porous, non-absorbent substrates.

Apply PARTALL One-Coat to mold surface in an even continuous coat with a brush, sponge, or roller andallow complete drying before molding parts. If size and shape of mold allows, application may be made byflooding the mold surface with PVA and tipping to drain off excess. Test for dry state by gently pressing fingerinto film, if PVA comes off of mold onto finger or if finger impression is left in PVA the film is not completely dry.

The goal is complete coverage with a smooth and glossy film without voids, separation or pin holes. Dry PVAfilm thickness should be 1 - 4 mils (25 – 100 µm), to protect mold surface from solvents found in thermosetcasting or fabrication resins, paints and adhesives. A wet film thickness of 20 mil (500 µm) should yield a dryfilm thickness of approximately 4 mil (100 µm).

Do not begin molding until surface is completely dry. Drying time is approximately 120 minutes at 70 °F(21 °C) with 50% relative humidity. Factors such as humidity and ambient air temperature and coating thick-ness will cause drying time to vary. Mechanically moving air over wet PVA surface or heating mold surface willaccelerate drying time.

Partall X-08 PVA Parting Film, also known as dome end PVA, is designed for use in the manufacture of non-cosmetic thermoset composite parts. The dry film is solvent-resistant yet water-soluble. Partall X-08 PVAParting Film contains a higher alcohol content than traditional PVA barrier solutions giving a faster drying time.Formulated with a special combination of polymers, Partall X-08 PVA Parting Film has improved perfor-mance on vertical surfaces. It is recommended as a parting agent for polyester, vinylester or epoxy resinparts made on most mold or plug surfaces. It is not recommended for use with resins containing water orgiving off water during cure (e.g., phenolics), or for mold substrates that contain or give off water as the dry filmis water-soluble.

De-molding of the part after the resin has cured is facilitated by the Partall X-08 releasing from the mold. It isthen readily peeled off or dissolved from the molded part with warm water or in some cases left on the part.Partall X-08 is typically used over a mold release wax such as Partall Paste #2 although in some applica-tions it is used as a stand-alone mold release agent. In most processes Partall X-08 will need to be renewedon the mold for each part.

PRODUCT DATA SHEET

PARTALL X-08

Apply on a clean mold surface that has been prepared with mold release wax such as Partall Paste #2according to instructions. Partall X-08 is ready to use as received and should not be diluted. Partall X-08 isdesigned to be applied by brush, roller or sponge. A self-feeding paint roller attached to a compressed airpressure pot is an efficient set-up for applying to large surfaces. Clean dry air is recommended.

Apply an even coat of wet Partall X-08 to mold surface ensuring 100% coverage without voids or gaps. Bestresults are achieved with multiple layers of Partall X-08 applied in different directions, allowing each coat tocompletely dry between coats and before making the fiberglass composite part. Recommended dry film thick-ness is 2 - 4 mils (50 – 100 µm) on new, recently repaired or reconditioned molds and 1 - 2 mils (25 - 50 µm)on seasoned molds. One gallon (3.79 L) will cover about 400 feet² (40 m²).

Drying time is normally 15 to 45 minutes depending on wet PVA coat thickness, ambient temperature andhumidity. The film should be very smooth and glossy when dry without voids, porosity, runs or sags. A dull filmmay result from insufficient application of material and may contain pinholes. Too little or a porous coating ofPVA film should be avoided as it will allow the aggressive solvents in the resin system to penetrate the PVA filmand cook against the mold surface during part exotherm causing damage to the part or the mold surface.

Porous molds (i.e., plaster or wood) must first be sealed. Best results are obtained with coatings formulatedspecifically as sealers or fairing compounds for the fiberglass reinforced molding industry such as FormulaFive Mold Sealer or Formula Five Mold Sealer-S (Super). Plaster molds or plugs must first be thoroughly dry.Molding surfaces should be free of other parting agents and contaminates such as silicone, dust, or compres-sor oil.

Partall X-08 PVA Parting Film will stay on the part when de-molded. It can be peeled or washed off with water. For stubborn films use warm water and a Scotch-Brite pad or bristle brush. Application equipment should becleaned with water before Partall X-08 dries. If PVA has dried soak equipment in warm water until PVA soft-ens. Do not leave Partall X-08 PVA Parting Film in spray equipment as metal parts may be damaged.

PARTALL Paste #2, “The Original Green Wax”, is a general purpose polishing compound and mold releasemade from a blend of hydrocarbon and microcrystalline waxes. For use with thermoset molding resins atambient temperature cure when making fiberglass, cast polymer or composites parts. It is particularly recom-mended for use on molds where standard silicone waxes hinder post-finishing operations or as a primer coatto create a smooth mold surface prior to application of PARTALL Film #10 or PARTALL Coverall Film.PARTALL Paste #2 may also be employed as an economical edge wax on larger molds, and is used to sealrough wood molds or plugs for casting composites, cements and grouts. Unregulated for shipping.

Use with PARTALL Film #10 or PARTALL Coverall Film PVA parting films for initializing new or reconditionedpolyester and vinylester molds.

Using a clean dry cloth, apply a small amount of Partall Paste #2 to mold surface in a thin even coat. 0.5 - 1.0gm is enough for about one square yard (1-meter2). Turn over cloth and begin buffing immediately by hand(within one minute after application). On larger molds or plugs work on smaller sections at a time or havesecond operator follow to polish. Power buffer equipped with a terry cloth or lamb’s wool pad will reduce labortime on larger molds. Surface should be buffed to a glossy finish.

Complete surface coverage is more important than a thick film of wax. In order to insure complete coverage, repeat application and polishing process 3 times for initializing new or reconditioned molds or plugs. Alternatedirection of application of each coat (i.e., zero degrees, 90-degrees, circular, etc.) Polish each coat beforeapplying the next.

Apply one coat of Partall Paste #2 polishing to a shine following each cycle thereafter until mold is broken in.Re-wax mold as necessary throughout production.

Partall Paste #2 may be used as an effective edge, hat or slurry wax applied in a thicker coats withoutpolishing to a shine.

The best procedure for separating parts from a mold depends on the size and shape of the part. In mostcases a part can be lifted from the mold after loosening around the edges. On large curved parts it may benecessary to first tap over the surface with a rubber mallet. A strong blast of compressed air, or a few squirtswith a CO2 extinguisher can aid in freeing very rigid parts that cannot be flexed.

FORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N Glaze is a mild cleanerand glaze that in most cases will remove chalking and shine the gel coat with less work, at a lower cost and with a longer-lasting results than many products on the market.

Clean gel-coat surface thoroughly prior to application of FORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N Glaze. The following are effectivecleaners:

A capful of liquid dishwashing detergent in a gallon (3.79 liter) of warm water.A cup (0.25 liter) of general-purpose detergent in a gallon (3.79 liter) of warm water.Up to one pound (0.5 kg) of trisodium phosphate (TSP) in one gallon (3.79 liter) of hot water for surfaces that have wax oroily deposits. TSP can be found at hardware stores and stores that sell paint and decorating related materials. If mold or mildew is a problem, add up to one cup (0.25 liter) of household bleach to the cleaning solution.Extreme oil, wax or grease build up may require the use of more aggressive cleaners that contain acetone or organicsolvents; use these with caution as they may soften polyester gel-coat, be health hazards or be flammable.

Rinse gelcoat surface with clear water and allow to dry completely before the next step.

Wipe on buff off. Shake FORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N Glaze bottle to mix prior to use. If working by hand, use a soft clean terryor cotton cloth or applicator pad to apply and polish FORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N Glaze. Work out of direct sunlight on amanageable area at a time, 2 – 4 square feet (0.25 - 0.5 m2). Squirt a coin-sized dab of FORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N Glazeper square foot (0.1 m2) of surface, adding as needed depending on surface condition. Wet buff, turning applicator frequently, until surface is dry and polished to a shine. Repeat as necessary for more difficult surface cleaning projects. Replace orclean applicator and buffing cloths or pads as they become soiled.

Working with a power buffer will reduce work but runs some risk of burning the surface or cutting through edges. ApplyFORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N Glaze to surface, starting with a coin sized amount per square foot (0.1 meter2) and add asneeded depending on surface condition. Wet buff with a power buffer equipped with a lambs wool, wool/synthetic blend, terry cloth or cotton pad. Keep power buffer moving until FORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N polishes to a dry shiny surface. Anyremaining dust or residue may be blown off with air or be rinsed off with water. General clean up is with soap and water.

Notes

Applying FORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N Glaze

A 32-ounce (0.95 liter) container goes a long way. One bottle will buff an entire 40-foot (12m) boat. One devoted FORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N Glaze user states, “I use it twice a year on my boat. It does a wonderful job.”For extremely oxidized gelcoat surfaces, wet ‘n dry sand paper of 600 - 800 grit or finer may be necessary to break thesurface prior to application of FORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N Glaze.Use caution not to damage surface and test on a small unobtrusive area first.Although a final coating with marine wax will give longer-lasting performance, FORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N Glaze requiresno further application of restorer or wax as it contains silicone and will provide a good level of protection to the gelcoat.FORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N Glaze is an effective cleaner for rubber rub rails and plated metal and stainless steel.FORMULA FIVE Clean ‘N Glaze is not recommended for surfaces coated in automotive type paints or for plasticsurfaces such as windshields or decorative appliqués or decals.

FORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer is ready to use as received with no mixing or agitation necessary. Must be applied to a cleansurface to perform properly. Clean mold thoroughly with FORMULA FIVE Mold Cleaner according to instructions or, ifnecessary, by compounding followed by warm water/detergent wash and followed by FORMULA FIVE Mold Cleaner. Ifrelease agents containing wax or silicone have previously been used on the mold, apply FORMULA FIVE Wax Stripperaccording to instructions. Polish to desired level of gloss prior to application of FORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer. Use tape test2

at several places on molding surface to verify cleanliness.

2 Use good quality 3/4 or 1 inch (18 - 24 mm) wide general-purpose masking tape such as Scotch Performance Masking Tape 234. Always use thesame tape so the feel of its standard removal becomes familiar. Apply a piece of tape about 8 inches (20 cm) in length and burnish to the mold. Pullthe tape up at a 90-degree angle to the surface. When testing a mold surface that has properly applied mold release, very little resistance should be

felt. Perform tape test at different areas of mold to ensure cleanliness or proper mold release application.

Consult Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) prior to use. FORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer should always be used in a well-ventilated area with appropriate personal protection equipment, including solvent resistant gloves and eye protection.

Using a clean dry lint-free cloth or high quality paper towel, wet but not dripping with FORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer, gentlywipe mold surface covering up to 5 square feet (0.5 meter2) at a time. Do not reuse cloths after drying as they will becontaminated with partially cured polymers that will cause streaking. Never pour mold sealer directly on mold. Reapplymold sealer to cloth frequently during application. Wipe away any pooling, do not over wipe or apply excess material.

Repeat on neighboring areas, overlapping to ensure complete coverage, until mold surface is completely covered. Aftersolvent carrier dries allow 15 minutes for mold sealer to cure. Apply at least one additional coat of FORMULA FIVE MoldSealer following the same procedure. A minimum of two coats are required before applying mold releases. Allow last moldsealer coat to cure for 30 minutes before applying a mold release. No buffing or polishing is necessary. Best practice fornew, reconditioned or repaired areas of previously seasoned molds is to apply a minimum of 4 coats of mold sealer, allowing30 minutes cure time for each coat and a minimum final cure time of 60 minutes.

FORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer will perform very well at application temperatures of 70 °F (21 °C) and above, but curing attemperatures above process or part resin exotherm temperature makes a more durable release base coating. Multiplecoats and longer curing times between mold sealer coats and for final cure will also make a more durable base.

Using a clean dry lint-free cloth or high quality paper towel, wet but not dripping with FORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer-S, gently wipemold surface covering up to 5 square feet (0.5 meter2) at a time. Do not reuse cloths after drying as they will be contaminated withpartially cured polymers that will cause streaking. Never pour mold sealer directly on mold. Reapply mold sealer to cloth frequentlyduring application.

Observe area just treated with FORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer-S, waiting approximately 20-60 seconds. Just before carrier solventflashes off (becomes dry) lightly dust wipe or fly-wipe to redistribute the polymer. Do not wipe hard or wipe totally dry and do notpolish at this point. The wipe-off step is essential to help the sealer cure evenly with reduced haze or streaking. If minor streakingremains after last coat is dry use a clean dry microfiber cloth to polish lightly.

Repeat on neighboring areas, overlapping to ensure complete coverage, until mold surface is completely covered. After solventcarrier dries allow 20 minutes for mold sealer to cure. Apply one additional coat of FORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer-S following thesame procedure and allow 30 minutes final cure time before applying FORMULA FIVE Glossy Top Coat, FORMULA FIVE Matte TopCoat, or other mold releases. Best practice for new, reconditioned or repaired areas of previously seasoned molds is to apply threecoats of mold sealer, allowing 30 minutes cure time for each coat and a final cure time of 60 minutes or overnight.

Allow 15 minutes after first coat has dried for the resulting film to cure. Then, using a fresh clean cloth or papertowel, repeat previous steps 3 more times for a total of 4 protective coats. When final coat is dry, allow film tocure for at least 30 minutes at room temperature before proceeding with molding. Durability of mold releasewill be improved by allowing films to cure longer or by heat curing, e.g. at 140 °F (60 °C) for 15 minutes or byheat curing at temperatures above process or part resin exotherm temperature.

For best results, reapply one coat of FORMULA FIVE Glossy Top Coat as described above after first, third andfifth part have been de-molded and when molded parts begin to hesitate or stick upon release. Best practicefor new or reconditioned molds or repaired areas of previously seasoned molds is to first applyFORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer or FORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer-S according to instructions, followed by sixcoats of FORMULA FIVE Glossy Top Coat, allowing 30 minutes cure time for each coat and allowing the finalcoat to cure overnight.

A soft solvent resistant brush or foam applicator pad is helpful to apply to difficult to reach or highly texturedareas.

Hand wiping is the best application method for FORMULA FIVE Glossy Top Coat, but the use of a spray misterbottle to apply to difficult to reach, highly textured areas or very large molds is useful. After spray application ofFORMULA FIVE Glossy Top Coat, gently wipe over wet coating using a clean dry cotton cloth so that a thinwet film remains - do not wipe dry. This will help eliminate hazing caused by spraying that appears upon cureor streaking caused by release pooling on mold.

If streaking is observed after applying a coat of mold release, polish off with a clean cloth after cure. Streakingcan be caused by applying too heavy of a coat of mold release or by applying with a cloth containing partially orfully cured release or other contaminates.

Use a clean cloth dampened with FORMULA FIVE Glossy Top Coat to clean scuff marks and light styrenebuild up from mold surfaces and to touch up wear areas on mold between production cycles.

If resin scum is observed after demolding a part, clean area using FORMULA FIVE Glossy Top Coat and wipeaway residue. If scumming persists while molding parts, lightly clean area(s) with FORMULA FIVE MoldCleaner and a Scotch-Bright type pad, wiping away residue and reapplying one or two coats of mold releaseas described above. Continue molding parts. If scumming is chronic, clean mold with FORMULA FIVE WaxStripper according to instructions and then buff the mold. Proceed by reconditioning mold withFORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer or FORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer-S and FORMULA FIVE Glossy Top Coataccording to instructions.

FORMULA FIVE Matte Top Coat performs very well at application temperatures of 70 °F (21 °C) but curing athigher temperatures such as 120 - 150 °F (49 - 66 °C) makes a more durable release coating. Multiple coatsand longer curing times between mold release coats before first part being made will also make a moredurable coating. Must be applied to a clean surface to perform properly. Use tape test at several places onmolding surface to verify cleanliness. Spray application is recommended for mold surfaces at or above 130 °F(55 °C) because of the rapid evaporation rate of the carrier solvents.

Consult Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) prior to use. FORMULA FIVE Matte Top Coat should always beused in a well-ventilated area with appropriate personal protection equipment, including solvent resistant gloves.

Using a clean dry lint-free cloth or high quality paper towel, wet but not dripping with FORMULA FIVE Matte TopCoat, gently wipe mold surface covering up to 5 square feet (0.5 meter2) at a time. Never pour mold releasedirectly on mold. Wipe away any pooling, do not over wipe or apply excess material. Reapply FORMULA FIVEMatte Top Coat to cloth frequently during application. No buffing or polishing is necessary. Repeat on neigh-boring areas, overlapping to ensure complete coverage, until mold surface is completely covered and allow tocure.

At temperatures above 100 °F (38 °C) allow 15 minutes for mold release to cure. At ambient temperaturesallow 30 minutes for mold release to cure. Using a fresh clean applicator repeat previous steps two moretimes for a total of three protective coats. Durability of mold release will be improved by allowing final film tocure longer and/or by heat curing at temperatures above process or part resin exotherm temperature. Reapplyone coat of FORMULA FIVE Matte Top Coat as described above after first part has been de-molded and whenmolded parts begin to hesitate or stick upon release.

If resin scum is observed after demolding a part, clean area using FORMULA FIVE Matte Top Coat and wipeaway residue. Continue molding parts. If scumming persists, lightly clean area with FORMULA FIVE MoldCleaner and a Scotch-Bright type pad, wiping away residue and reapply one to two coats of mold release asdescribed above. Continue molding parts. If scumming is chronic use FORMULA FIVE Wax Stripper and thenbuff the mold. Proceed by applying FORMULA FIVE Matte Top Coat (and FORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer orFORMULA FIVE Mold Sealer-S as required) again as described above from first step. If streaking is observedafter applying a coat of mold release, polish off with clean cloth after cure. Streaking can be caused by applyingtoo heavy of a coat of mold release or by applying with a cloth containing partially or fully cured release or othercontaminates.

If pre-release is experienced on parts made with gel-coat it may be due to the high-slip properties ofFORMULA FIVE Matte Top Coat. A very light wiping of problem areas with FORMULA FIVE Mold Cleaner willincrease surface tension and reduce gel-coat pre-release.

Frequently Asked QuestionsPARTALL • MARBALEASE • FORMULA FIVE

Is it necessary to use polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in addition to wax?

The answer to this question depends on a number of factors but the bottom line is this: if you do not want the part to stickto and possibly ruin your mold, then use PVA. If mold is new or reconditioned, then you should definitely use a PVAsuch as PARTALL® Coverall Film or PARTALL® Film #10 to prevent styrene migration. If mold is seasoned, then the use ofPVA is not necessary except as additional insurance against sticking as long as wax is applied properly and with sufficientfrequency. If mold is very large or intricate you may have difficulty achieving adequate coverage using wax only. PVA canbe sprayed into hard-to-reach crevices and forms a visible barrier you can see on the mold surface.

A hard white buildup has accumulated on my mold – what is it?

The appearance of a hard white buildup on the mold surface is commonly mistaken as evidence of styrene in the parting waxor wax buildup. The white substance is more likely styrene that has migrated from within the mold to the surface and brokenthrough the wax barrier. Styrene molecules in the mold are attracted to styrene molecules in resins used to form the partand will bond if allowed to come into contact, causing the part to stick. .

Waxes are applied to mold surfaces prior to the molding process in order to prevent bonding. However, heat generatedduring the molding process gradually softens wax and can inhibit its effectiveness as a barrier. In order to prevent styrenemigration between mold and part a polyvinyl alcohol film (PVA) such as PARTALL® Coverall Film or PARTALL® Film #10should be used in conjunction with wax. If applied properly, PVA creates a barrier through which styrene molecules cannotpenetrate. Wax and/or PVA must be applied properly and adequately in order to form an effective barrier.

The use of PVA is particularly necessary on new or reconditioned molds. Once a mold is seasoned wax alone isnormally sufficient as a barrier when applied as needed but PVA can certainly be used as extra protection against costlyand time-consuming molding hang-ups, particularly on very large, intricate, or expensive molds.

If styrene migration does occur you will need to recondition the mold surface. This type of buildup usually requires strippingdown the mold with a power sander until styrene is no longer present on the surface. In some cases buffing or hand rubbingthe mold with fine abrasives or finishing compounds may be sufficient - the key is to remove all traces of styrene buildupfrom the mold surface. Keep in mind that a reconditioned mold should be treated like a new mold in terms of the waxing /PVA process.

How thick must PVA coat be to form a sufficient barrier?

Apply to a thickness of at least 2 - 4 mils (50 - 100 micron) on new or reconditioned molds and at least 1 - 2 mils(25 - 50 micron) on seasoned molds. Two mils is approximately equal to the thickness of an industrial-type trash bag.

How do I know if PVA has been applied properly?

When applied correctly PVA should form a continuous film free of pinholes or air bubbles that is smooth and glossy whendry. Dry film thickness must be at least 2 - 4 mils (50 - 100 micron) on new / reconditioned molds and at least 1 - 2 mils (25- 50 micron) on seasoned molds (two mils is approximately equal to the thickness of an industrial-type trash bag).

Frequently Asked QuestionsPARTALL • MARBALEASE • FORMULA FIVE

Each coat of PVA must be allowed to dry completely prior to applying additional coats or proceeding with molding. Keep inmind that entire coat - not just the surface - must dry completely in order to form an effective barrier. You may find it helpfulto spray a test panel at the same time PVA is applied to mold in order to more easily check that coat has dried thoroughly.

How long should I wait before buffing wax?

Begin buffing FORMULA FIVE® Mold Release Wax 10 - 12 minutes after application. If wax wipes off easily or “balls up”when buffed then it has not been allowed to form an adequate bond with mold surface. Begin buffing PARTALL® Paste #2 and PARTALL® Hi-Temp Wax when moderately dry (1 - 2 minutes after application).Buffing will be more difficult if PARTALL® Paste #2 and PARTALL® Hi-Temp Wax remain on mold surface for extendedlengths of time.

Can PVA be used on a wood or plaster mold without sealing mold first?

No, both wood and plaster molds must be sealed prior to application of PVA. Automobile type primer-sealers and lacquerscan generally produce the desired surface. Wax should also be applied to wood molds prior to use of water-soluble PVAcoatings such as PARTALL® Coverall Film or PARTALL® Film #10 as moisture that resides naturally in wood may compro-mise the PVA’s integrity and produce areas of the mold surface that are not adequately protected.

I’m spraying PVA on top of gel coat as part of a repair process but the PVA seems to be “attacking” the gel coat– what is happening?

Two things are probably happening. The gel coat may not have been allowed to set up properly (is not hard enough) and thePVA is penetrating its surface. Also, you may be too close to gel coat surface while spraying and air pressure in thespraygun is forcing the PVA into the gel coat. Spray from a distance that allows PVA to atomize (mist) completely beforecoming in contact with the gel coat.

Can PVA be applied using a brush instead of a spraygun?

PVA can be applied using a brush although a spraygun is recommended in order to produce a smoother surface on the moldand, thus, on the finished part.

Why did PARTALL® Film #10 “cobweb” when I sprayed it? Why are there air bubbles in the PARTALL® Film #10coat I just sprayed?

These two conditions are generally due to lack of humidity and are very common in deserts or desert-like areas. Cobwebbingoccurs when PARTALL® Film #10 dries immediately upon contact with air and sprays out as a stringy substance.

Frequently Asked QuestionsPARTALL • MARBALEASE • FORMULA FIVE

Lack of humidity also sometimes results in air bubbles or “fish-eyes” in PARTALL® Film #10. This happens when the PVAcoating dries on the mold surface before air bubbles have had a chance to break. Both of these situations can usually beresolved by adding water to PARTALL® Film #10. Begin with 10 mL of water per 1000 mL of PVA solution and test, addingmore water if necessary until PVA works properly. It is very important to keep in mind, however, that as PARTALL® Film #10is diluted the percentage of solids in the mixture decreases, thereby necessitating that more PVA be used to achieveadequate coverage.

Can I apply PVA and then bake mold in an oven?

PARTALL® Film #10 and PARTALL® Coverall Film consist primarily of partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and thuscan be baked following application to mold surface. The following are guidelines for approximate length of time at specifictemperatures – these are only suggestions.

Temperature Length of Time in Oven in Oven200 °F/ 93 °C 12 hours225 F/ 107 °C 6 hours250 F/ 121 °C 4 hours275 F/ 135 °C 2 hours300 F/ 150 °C 45 minutes

It is not recommended that PARTALL® Film #10 or PARTALL® Coverall Film be subjected to temperatures higherthan 300° F (150° C) as carbonization is likely to occur. Carbonization is a process by which molecules in the PVA filmbond with molecules on the mold surface. If this occurs, sanding will be required to remove PVA from the mold surface ratherthan the normal procedure of simply rinsing with water. Even if carbonization does not occur PVA is likely to require hotwater for removal when baked in an oven.

If you choose to bake a mold with PVA on it, keep a close eye on the process and use your own judgment as towhen to remove mold from oven.

How do I remove wax from my mold?

Use manufacturer’s instructions for removal of wax from mold surface. If no instructions are provided, try melting wax fromsurface using steam cleaner or boiling water. If unsuccessful, try mixing one pound of Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) with onegallon of hot water (water must be hot). TSP can be found at hardware stores and stores that sell paint-related items. Scrubmold thoroughly with mixture to remove waxes from the surface.

If suggestions outlined above do not remove wax residue or if styrene migration has occurred it will be necessary to use apower sander to recondition mold surface. Once reconditioning is complete mold should be treated as if new and moldrelease agents should be applied accordingly.

Frequently Asked QuestionsPARTALL • MARBALEASE • FORMULA FIVE

How can I achieve a “satin finish” using PVA?

PARTALL® Coverall Film and PARTALL® Film #10 normally produce a smooth finish on the mold surface and in turn on themolded part. In order to achieve a non-smooth, non-glossy, dull finish (i.e., satin finish) you can try adding fumed silica toPVA solution. Silica is a very fine crystalline compound that does not dissolve in PVA, thus producing the abrasion thatcreates the desired look.

Silica should be added at a ratio of 25 grams silica per one gallon PVA. Mixture must be shaken before use; if not mixedproperly silica will settle to bottom of spraygun cup - and then allowed to sit for approximately one minute until air bubblesdisperse. Some common trade names for silica are Cabosil and Aerosil.

Can I prep my mold with PVA and leave overnight prior to molding?

Both PARTALL® Coverall Film and PARTALL® Film #10 are water-soluble solutions that may be attacked and weakened bymoisture in the atmosphere and for this reason it is not recommended that either be allowed to sit on a mold overnight. Ifyou do prep your mold the night before molding be certain to carefully check the integrity of PVA film and make certain thatits effectiveness as a release agent / protective barrier has not been compromised.

Can PARTALL® Paste #2 be used in high heat applications?

No, PARTALL® Paste #2 is not designed for use in applications exceeding approximately 120 °F (50 °C) as wax will beginto melt and will not provide adequate protection. Use PARTALL® Hi-Temp Wax for higher heat processes up to 350 °F (177 °C).PARTALL® Hi-Temp Wax contains polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon®) that bonds to the mold surface and continues protectingafter waxes have melted away, resulting in more pulls per product application. Because PARTALL® Hi-Temp Wax does notcontain silicone it can usually be used in applications where silicone-based waxes hinder post-finishing operations, such aspainting.

Is it ok to dilute PARTALL® Coverall Film or PARTALL® Film #10 prior to use?

PARTALL® Coverall Film and PARTALL® Film #10 are shipped ready to use and should not be diluted. The addition of water(or any other liquid additive) will decrease the amount of solids per unit of measure, thus requiring that additional coats beapplied in order to achieve the same degree of release protection as would be obtained with undiluted product. Never addchemicals as they may not be compatible and may change the product’s flash point, boiling point, etc.
