Module 6: Home and Community Safety Learning Goals:
• To increase awareness of home safety • To increase awareness of safety in the community
Key Messages:
1. Up to 51% of falls occur in the home, there may be many causes for these falls but look at your environment to reduce some of the risks
2. Look for unsafe conditions at home and ways to reduce these risks
• Keep walking areas clear of clutter: loose rugs, cords, pets • Improve lighting, mop up spills to prevent slippery floors and repair
unsafe stairways
3. Identify unsafe conditions in your community • Be alert for uneven sidewalks, entrances with slippery, shiny surfaces,
poorly lit stairways • Use caution in doorways, at crosswalks, and in your community

Self-Test: Hazards This test will show you how to recognize some hazards in your home and in your community to prevent a fall. Questions: Never Sometimes Always
