New England Professional Development Core Competency Training Module 5 Ethics and Cultural Awareness Description: This program gives an overview of the important roles that Ethics and Cultural Awareness play in working with small business clients. SBDC business counselors need to be aware of, and practice, a professional and collective code of values. SBDC business counselors also need to be cognizant of, and be sensitive to, their clients in ways which relate to the client’s personal background and sense of being. These modules will include discussion and exercises involving the following topics: Ethics Definition Ethical Decision-Making Biasing Factors SBDC Regulations, Agreements, and Standards of Conduct Ethics Check Questions Ethics Resources Cultural Awareness Goals Diversity Web Cultural Survival Race Ethnicity & Identity Multicultural Studies and Standards Minority Studies Diversity Central Duration: These Modules will be 4 total hours in length, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., on Thursday November 10, 2011. There will be one mid-session 15 minute break. Description:

These Modules will be 4 total hours in length, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., on Thursday

November 10, 2011. There will be one mid-session 15 minute break.

Goals & Anticipated Learning:

The presenters will review the approaches necessary and some identifiable cues which will allow

an astute business advisor to conduct a more meaningful and sensitive counseling session with

the diversity of their small business clients.

Materials:

The material included in Module 5 will serve as excellent background information and additional

resource information for the students. Due to the time limitations the presenters will cover what

they consider to be the essential information from the module. The speakers will have handouts

in an outline format for their presentations. Please refer to the Core Competencies Reference

Manual for a comprehensive outline of other information in support of this session.

Educational Approach:

The presenters will utilize PowerPoint and other computer media models to supplement the

lectures. The session will be very interactive and there will be time for questions from the

audience. The materials and examples in this session will be geared toward providing new SBDC

Business Advisors/Counselors/Consultants practical information that will be very helpful in

assisting their clients.

Presenter Biographies:

Doug Jobling

Doug Jobling is the Regional Director for the Rhode Island Small Business Development Center

(RISBDC) in northern Rhode Island, working in partnership with the Northern Rhode Island

Chamber of Commerce. He has served the northern Rhode Island area since 1998. He is a

Certified Business Counselor.

Jobling was the original State Director of the RISBDC, launching the program in 1983. He

served on several committees of the national Association of SBDC’s, including the Board of

Directors, and was a founder and two-term Chair of the New England Professional Development

Committee. Jobling stepped down from the State Directorship to concentrate on serving in

northern Rhode Island in 1998.

Prior to joining the SBDC family, he was an administrator in the U.S. Department of Labor-

funded employment and training system in Brockton, Massachusetts. Jobling holds a Master’s

of Urban Affairs from Boston University and a Master’s of Business Administration from Bryant

University.

Ginne-Rae Clay

Ginne-Rae Clay is the State Director of the Connecticut Small Business Development Center at

Central Connecticut State University. Ms. Clay takes the lead role in statewide small business

development after spending 20 years at the State of Connecticut Department of Economic and

Community Development. During her tenure, Ms. Clay held various management positions in

the areas of business and community development, strategic planning and housing finance.

A native of Waterbury, Connecticut, Ms. Clay received a bachelor's degree in Communications

from the University Connecticut (1986) and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the

University of Hartford (1995). She holds national certifications in Economic Development

Finance and Housing Finance with the National Development Council (NDC)

Ms. Clay has served as a board member of Waterbury Main Street, the Connecticut Maritime

Commission, ACE Mentoring Program, Greater Hartford Workforce Development Board,

Women's Business Forum, Connecticut Child Day Care Council, Greater Waterbury YMCA and

the Initiative for Competitive Inner City.

Ms. Clay was selected as member of the Who's Who Among Executives and Professionals

(2005-2007). She has received recognition as a State of Connecticut Outstanding Manager, the

Board of Directors Service Award from the Waterbury Opportunities Industrialization Center

(WOIC) and was recognized as a Woman of Excellence in 2005.
