Composition Strategy: 1+1=1
By observing my pattern, I picked up the key shapes, pentagon and hexagon, that made up the pattern to combine them in an interesting way. The first combination I tried was a repetation of hexagons with its size being smaller and smaller. However, I found that this model was still a little bit flat and with limited further development. Therefore, I decided to make a more 3-dimentional model composing by a number of dimentional hexagons. After trying different possibilities, I prefer this design as shown in the following pictures. Actually, this is just a base of my emerging form. I can add more layers to it and explore some interesting ways to compose the dimentional hexagon. The reason why I prefer this model is because I can see more possible compositions coming from this base.

Based on the paper model, I came up with this clay model by composing smaller and larger scale of obejects.
Clay ModelThis is the second simplified clay model emerged from the paper model. I decided to use this model to produce contours and then I took a number of reference pictures of my model in orthographic views.

Side View Back ViewThe reasom why I chose this clay model was because it has a clear shape so that I can apply method 1 to digitise this model.
Combination of Two Clay Models
Since I have made different clay models, I came up with an idea of combining them together to help me have a more detailed image of my lantern. After observing these two models, I would like to maintained the overall shape of the second model and added 3-dimentional hexagons from the first model to the surface of the overall shape.
Digitisation: Contour MethodMethod 1Although I have combined two models, a simplication of the shape is needed in order to apply the contour method. I imported reference pictures with scale marker into Rhino and trace curves to generate contours.

2D PANELING
3D Paneling
Actually, this is the basic shape I want to add it to my model. It is like a hexagonal sphere. However, I found problem making this shape in Rhino so I tried the simple shape with hexagon.
3D Paneling
To enable the light to come through the lantern, I tried to creat holes in the patern using the Offset Border tool.
3D Paneling
This time I tried to add hexagonal 3D shape in sphere.
Precedent Study
#StemCloud, Shoreditch, London#
STEMcloud has been developed as a parametric furniture system able to generate spatial atmospheres (clouds) by providing light filtration, privacy and oxygenation. STEM cloud promotes a concentrated experience of man-nature interaction in dense urban contexts where the presence of traditional vegetative systems is close to zero. A series of plug-ins add functionality and customization to the system, introducing artificial lighting, objects containers, pining surfaces, etc. The parametric nature of the single modules allows for a computational definition of the overall clouds; environmental gradients of solar radiation, people flow intensity, co2 emissions can be computed and used as generative environments for the developments of specific clouds/assemblages of STEM.

Prototype & Light Effect
The l ight ing e f fect and shadows can be tested by prototype. I was satisfied with the light effect with hexagonal and triangle as a whole.
My first and third 3D models are based on this dimentional hexagon shape. As for this one, I found that the light would not be visible enoughe from the interior of lantern. Therefore, I tried to create holes enabling more light to come through the lantern. The shadow contains both hexagon and circle. At this stage, I was still not satisfied with the light effects of my lantern as it was not creative e n o u g h . I w i l l k e e p o n exploring more on the light effect of my lantern.
