MODERN CONTRIBUTORS

DANIELLE KEASLINGDanielle Keasling is the owner of Salon Karma in Bluff-ton, South Carolina. A Matrix Artistic Educator, Keasling has trained with Daniel Roldan, John Fager and Jorge Morales. Specializing in Great Lengths Hair Extensions, wigs and additions, Keasling was recently recognized as a semi finalist in the Great Lengths Challenge. Her finishes have been published in CH2 Magazine, and now MODERN SALON’s cover.

LUIS ALVAREZFor MODERN’s back-to-school issue, Luis Al-varez, award-winning hair designer and VP of Creative and Education for Aquage, created an exclusive “Glo” collection. He was inspired by his own young daughters and their friends, and the “digital media glow” they create when hanging out together or doing homework in the basement. For the hair styling of the twin sister models featured in Glo, he incorporated an-other trend he is seeing with clients age 14-20. “They are not into blow drying—they let their hair air dry and then use an iron or wand to style the hair, taking it either perfectly flat and smooth or textured. This generation has no patience for the round brush, but they will use products to protect the hair and then get cre-ative.” See “Glo” on page 88.

Long before he was accepted to the program, Timmy Willy was eager to spread the love in any way he could. He did manicures for women at assisted living homes and volunteered as a care-taker at his town’s free zoo. So when he learned about Spread the Love’s extensive philanthropic activities, he couldn’t wait to apply. The versa-tile stylist is an accomplished singer, a national award-winning gymnast and an avid horticultur-ist. See the results of his shoot on page 82 where he was mentored by Ammon Carver.

Nominated by his aunt, who works in the beauty industry, Joshua Falewitch was excited to contribute to the beauty industry in a charita-ble way through Spread the Love, but also excit-ed to spread the word about hairdressing being a noble profession that any licensed professional

should be proud to be a part of. The Xenon In-ternational Academy graduate from Omaha, Ne-braska, was mentored by Daniel Roldan.

Originally from Buffalo Grove, Illinois, Natalie Fox now lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, and recent-ly graduated from Kohler Academy. In addition to finding her true passion in hairdressing, Fox also has a background in journalism, which helped her with documenting her STL experience. Her mentors for this shoot were Nick Stenson and Patrick McIvor.

St. Michael, Minnesota’s Suzy Hennings-gard, who graduated from Aveda Institute Min-neapolis, has a knack for editing and producing videos—which was a huge help to her while she was on the road with STL, documenting her jour-ney. Her mentor on set and throughout the STL

experience was Nicholas French.Phoenix, Arizona’s Todd Kane has a life story

peppered with passion, love and experience. A military veteran, he is strong, determined and has a unique perspective on life he contributed to the STL team. A recent graduate of Kohler Academy, Kane has dreams of styling hair for a TV commercial or movie set. His STL mentor was Chrystofer Benson.

Meredith Tye, from Lenoir, North Carolina, is inherently talented at doing hair (she even puts LED lights into her own styles for special occa-sions), but is also a skilled physicist. The Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute grad was one of the STL People’s Choice picks, and aggressively sought out votes to get her into the finals. See the results of her shoot on page 83, mentored by Brian and Sandra Smith.

BEHIND THE COVER

36 August 2012 modernsalon.com

Artist Session is MODERN’s community-building seminar designed to guide top salon professionals in a quest to build a portfolio, enter the session world and, ultimately, get more recognition and money for

styling work as a salon stylist or freelance hairdresser. The program is open to all licensed stylists and has welcomed dozens of professionals from recent beauty school graduates to NAHA winners, as well as recognized cover artists. Attendees both support and guide each other while bonding and sharing. Great friendships, both personal and professional, have resulted from attendance at Artist Session (the next one will be held October 1-2).

It is because of that community that Danielle Keasling, MODERN’s cover artist, has participated in two sessions. “I learned so much from my fi rst Artist Session and was able to turn that experience into something much bigger and better,” she says. “I held back at the fi rst session and, although I was pleased with my look, I knew I could create something stronger.”

So for this, her second session, Keasling came with a plan. “My inspiration for this shoot was the timeless and sexy Brigitte Bardot. I wanted to create sexy, wearable hair that stood the test of time.” To achieve the look, Keasling used a Sedu Revolution clipless iron (from her Artist Session goody bag) and curled 1.5˝ sections throughout the hair to create a strong base. Each section was sprayed with Matrix Design Pulse Iron In. Hair U Wear clip in extensions in Buttered Toast were added for bulk. After styling and pulling up the hair, a Jes-sica Simpson piece was added to create more lift in the crown. L’Oréal Professi-onnel Infi nium #4 Finishing Spray was sprayed over the surface to set the look.

But, admits Keasling, the best part of Artist Session was meeting and spend-ing time with the other hairdressers in attendance. “I met so many amazing people. I am still on a hairstylist’s ‘high.’ For me, this was a life-changing expe-rience.” And a cover-worthy experience as well.

The Legendary Goody Bag>> The Artist Session Goody Bag has become known, as one regular attendee calls it, “The most valuable goody bag in any industry.”

For the spring 2012 Artist Session, the goody bag was fi lled with coveted items like: a Salon Tech Phoenix Pro 550 blow dryer and Thermo Chromic heat activated color changing brush; Wahl Peanut Clipper; Sam Villa Textur Iron; FHI Heat Platform 15 Styling Iron; Nalu Waver 3/4” Dual Barrel Styling System; R-Session Root Control irons and Protective Styling Tool Heat Mat; Cricket brushes; a Rusk Heat Freak Curling Iron; the new Eufora Dry Shampoo; and a Ricky’s discount card.

“The bag alone is worth attendance,” says fi ve-time attendee Jose Buitron. “Add that to everything else including the photo shoot and the education and Artist Session is the best buy in the salon world!”

The next MODERN SALON Artist Session will be held in New York, October 1-2, 2012. Visit modernsalon.com/artistsession for more details.

New App>> Style Seeker, a new iPad app, has hundreds of looks to help stylists during a consultation. Stylists can show clients options for choosing lengths, colors and styles. Stylists can also use iPad cameras to take before and after photos and store them as a personal gallery.

“For most stylists managing client information, photos, color formulas, products and cuts, has traditionally been a paper-based job,” said Janell Shaffer, CEO, Style Seeker. “Now stylists can leverage technology to both capture and manage all of that vital client information in one place as well as to enhance each visit.”

Style Seeker also helps stylists manage and maintain their client information. “Our ultimate goal is to help make each visit with a customer a personal one,” says Shaffer. “We want to develop tools that are easy to use and help foster a strong relationship between stylists and their customers.”

The app is also available for iPhone and Android. For more information visit mybestfriendshair.com/iPad.
