Currently 5 areas of Cagliari have restricted traffic zones for vehicles. Four zones are located in the historical districts : Marina, Stampace, Villanova, Castello.

In Marina, Stampace and Villanova access is prohibited from 7:30 to 10:30 and from15:30 and 17:30 .In Castello district transit is prohibited from 24:00 to 9:00 .

The 5th zone is at Poetto Beach.

Pedestrian areas are currently limited to two major shopping streets: Via Garibaldi and Via

Manno.

 The extension is equal to 0.8km constituting 0.2% of the streets.

The metro service in Cagliari has been active since March 18, 2008.

It consists of a single line from Piazza Repubblica to Monserrato,

a municipality in the metropolitan area of Cagliari.

Transport is responsible, approximately, for one third of the national emissions of the greenhouse gases of which carbon bioxide is about 96%.

In Cagliari, there are 64 cars every 100 inhabitants and the environmental issues related to vehicles pressure is the same as in the rest of Italy.

Concentrations of PM10 (particulate matter), NO2 (nitrogen oxides) and O3 (ozone) reach quite high values, sometimes even beyond those limits established for

the protection of human health (DM 60/2002).

The Campidano Railways Company started the first town tram service on September 2, 1893 with a steam train, the line’Cagliari-Quartu Sant Elena’ .This locomotive was called “ Sa caffettera”(Coffeemaker) by the people .
