We offer this outstanding package for much less than the retail cost of the lap-top computer alone. An equally pow-erful machine complete with software would be difficult to find at this price. A less powerful machine may put you at a disadvantage in your course work.

ValueRensselaer’s laptop is loaded with soft-ware (from word processing to comput-er-aided design), ready for your Rens-selaer course work. It has been tested and it is specially configured for easy connection to the Rensselaer network.

Appropriateness

Rensselaer’s laptop is fully supported by on-campus consulting and Lenovo-cer-tified repair services. The consultants at the Help Desk in the Voorhees Comput-ing Center (VCC) are ready to help you in person, on-line, or by phone.

If anything should go wrong with the laptop, you’ll be able to get it fixed right here on campus and we have a pool of loaner machines available, if needed.

Service and Support

A valuable asset is that your classmates and instructors will be using the same system and software. You will be able to turn to them for help and to share solu-tions.

What’s new this year? The T61p mobile workstation is cooler, quieter, and more efficient than previ-ous models according to Lenovo, and is Energy Star 4.0 certified. The new cooling system in the T61p allows it to run 3 deci-bels quieter than previous models and ten percent cooler, even running at full tilt. The Active Protection System provides protection from bumps and drops.

We’ve configured this year’s laptop with a faster 45nm Penryn processor, 3GB RAM, and a higher speed hard drive. The Nvidia QuadroFX 570M OpenGL graph-ics card raises the bar for graphics per-formance. We’ve also included a 9-cell battery.

Both a four-year warranty as well as four years of ThinkPad Protection (accidental damage) are included.

Should I buy a printer?There are public networked printers across campus that might be all you need, so we recommend you wait until you’ve settled in. The Rensselaer Campus Computer Store (http://computerstore.rpi.edu) sells compatible printers, as well as many other peripherals and soft-ware, at educational discounts.

When will I use my laptop? You will use your laptop for your coursework (in and out of the class-room), communicating with faculty, and keeping in touch with friends and family. You will value “anywhere/anytime” access to the world’s information infrastructure, connecting to the network at any of the thousands of laptop jacks in classrooms, public areas and in your resi-dence hall, and via the wireless network.

What if I have questions or trouble with my laptop?The consultants at the Help Desk on the main floor of the VCC can assist you with problems. Rensselaer Computer Repair (RCR), on the lower level of the VCC, is an authorized Lenovo repair center so you will be able to have your laptop repaired here on campus by certified, professional repair tech-nicians,
