GSM-R Terminals

Shaping the future of GSM-RThe integration of GSM-R into an existingrailway network presents the railwayoperator with many different challengesand opportunities. The goal is to install anew GSM-R network and migrate the newcommunication system into an existingoperational railway with minimaldisruption to service.

From the very beginning, the railwayoperator must not lose sight of how thesystem will perform from the users’ pointof view – especially from the perspectiveof train drivers and dispatchers. Providingthe right GSM-R terminals is an extremelyimportant part of the overall GSM-Rsolution. For over 20 years SiemensTransportation Systems has been a leadingsupplier of specialist end-to-end radiocommunications solutions for the railwayindustry throughout the world.

Terminal Solutions in the control centre

Terminal Solutions on the Train

Siemens Transportation Systems providesa complete range of GSM-R dispatcherterminal solutions for the railway operator, including radio connected dispatcherterminals.

Compliant with EIRENE specifications, the Siemens dispatcher terminal has theadditional flexibility to include essentialrailway-specific functionality, over andabove EIRENE standard. For example, continuously updated lists of trains within a dispatcher’s areas of control, and

light-duty working. Placing a call is simply a matter of selecting the train andpressing the CALL button – no more needfor telephone numbers.

The Siemens Controller Server provides thenecessary support for the dispatcherterminals, including interfaces with theGSM-R network and to other railwaysystems. The priority mechanisms usedwithin GSM-R are clearly understood, as are the protocols used to transferfunctional numbers.

The Control Centre functionality can alsoinclude the necessary processing toachieve Enhanced Location DependantAddressing (eLDA).

Whatever the requirement, the Siemensdispatcher terminal provides a proven,user-friendly interface for the handling and placing of railway-related calls.

The Siemens terminal solutions includeGSM-R and analogue cab radios, availablein different configurations to providemaximum flexibility.

The EIRENE compliant GSM-R cab radiocomes in two compact units to provideGSM-R voice (including non-ETCS dataapplications) and ETCS datacommunication. Each unit is containedwithin its own enclosure, and can operatewithout the other unit being present.

This gives a wide range of mountingpossibilities – individually on a wall orunder a shelf, or together in a 19” rack.Whether the train is old or new, theSiemens cab radio is designed to fit.

The Siemens GSM-R product rangeincludes a selection of compact, cassette-mounted radios, which have theloudspeaker and Human ComputerInterface (HCI) integrated into the front of the unit.

These “one-unit” radios have beenspecifically designed for fast installationand “swap-out” on a train – which has thebenefit of reducing the “out of service”time for each train during installation, as well as minimising the costs.

The HCI can be supplied as either a textualdisplay with dedicated function keys or as a graphical display with configurable“soft” keys.

Dispatchersystemcomponents

The Siemens GSM-R Dispatcher System isdesigned to provide a range of solutions tomeet a variety of railway operationalneeds. The system includes a family ofdispatcher terminals, which can be usedstand-alone to provide basic EIRENEfunctionality. When used in conjunctionwith the other member of the system, theController Server, the capability of theseterminals is extended to providesignificantly more functionality than wouldbe possible in the stand-alone installation.

The Fixed Dispatcher Terminalis intended for large control centreswith high voice and train traffic loads.

The Radio Dispatcher Terminalis suited to smaller installations with lower voice and train trafficloads. This connects to the networkusing GSM-R air-interface.

Siemens HiPath 4000, acts as a hub to connect the fixed dispatcherterminal and telephone dispatcherterminal to the GSM-R network.

The Controller Server augments thecapabilities of all Siemens dispatcherterminals by serving them with extrafunctionality and controlling theirconfiguration and behaviour.

The Acknowledgement Centre is anEIRENE compliant standard platformsolution that receives and recordsnotifications from the GSM-R system, detailing emergency calls that havebeen made. The information fromeach call is made available for anypost incident analysis.

User Features: Fully EIRENE compliant

User-friendly operator interface with user selection of HCI Language

Ordered list of incoming calls with priority handling and automatic answering of all emergency calls

Decoding of functional numbers in incoming calls

Call by functional number (or MSISDN)

 Extensive structured phonebook

 Call hold / restore

Call transfer / multipartyand group calls

 Handset or hands-free operation

 Call logging records

Dispatcher TerminalsTechnical Features: Fully EIRENE compliant

All dispatcher terminals have a menu driven interface making them easy and intuitive to use

All dispatcher terminals can be operated standalone or in conjunction with the Controller Server

Enhanced Location DependantAddressing (eLDA) based on track position or GPS

Flexible allocation of dispatcherterminal roles and responsibilities

Text-message routing to and from the dispatcher terminals using functional numbering and eLDA

Interfaces with train location systems to provide enhanced location dependent addressing

 Remote fault monitoring

 Links to non-GSM-R networks possible

ArchitectureThe Siemens GSM-R Dispatcher Systememploys standard communication linksto interface to the other parts of the GSM-R network. It also supportsproprietary interfaces where these arenecessary, for example to gather preciseinformation about train positions fromrailway signalling systems.

These are some of the standard interfaces supported:-

The network MSC via standard E1 ISDN trunk lines

Siemens dispatcher terminals via standard ISDN basic rate linesor GSM-R air-interface

The network SMSC via SMPP over TCP/IP

Other railway data systems (for example IN, Train LocationSystems) via TCP/IP over Ethernet or serial link

GSM-RVoiceRadioThe Siemens GSM-R Voice Radio is EIRENEcompliant and includes all the specialfeatures required for railway operation.

Its compact design includes a tough,heavy-duty casing with state-of-the-artelectronics designed to withstand theworst on-train environments. In addition, the software has been developed to Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL2) to provide the highest standards of reliability.

The voice radio can be connected to eitherone or two driver panels, ranging from atext based control head to a colourgraphical Human Computer Interface(HCI). It is able to transmit and receivegeneral-purpose data, through a widerange of standard serial interfaces to suitalmost every requirement.

The voice radio supports a diagnostic andmaintenance terminal that can be used toprovide vital support for the first andsecond line maintainer. This plug-interminal is able to change databasesettings, read SIM card parameters, load new software releases displaynetwork settings – all to make life easier for the maintainer.

The voice radio is also capable ofexpansion to include GPS funtionality andGPRS for large data transfer options.

GSM-R CassetteMountingRadiosThe Siemens GSM-R product rangeincludes a selection of compact, cassette-mounted radios, which have theloudspeaker and HCI integrated into thefront of the unit.

The “one-unit” radios have beenspecifically designed for fast installationand “swap-out” on a train. This has thebenefit of reducing the “out of service”time for each train during installations, aswell as minimising costs.

The cab radios include special powerconditioning circuits so that the same cab radio can be used on many differenttrain types – regardless of train voltage. This means only one cab radio variant for all trains, minimising spares andmaintenance costs.

There is a choice of HCI which can besupplied as either a textual display withdedicated function keys, or as a graphicaldisplay with configurable “soft” keys.

GSM-RETCSData RadioThe European Train Control System (ETCS)is being introduced to provide Europe witha standardised signalling system, whichwill enable trains to operate easily acrossnational boundaries.

GSM-R is the radio bearer for ETCS datacommunications between the train andthe trackside infrastructure.

The Siemens ETCS Data Radio provides animportant link for the transmission ofmovement authorities from the RadioBlock Centre (RBC) to the train, where anin-cab display allows the driver to controlthe train without reference to line-sidesignals. The radio is a compact unitdesigned for ease of installation with ETCSequipment from several major suppliers.

All the main components within theSiemens ETCS data radio are fullyduplicated to provide the necessary high availability required for such animportant application.
