Week beginning 30/03/20 English Have you updated your diary for what you did during your first week at home? Remember to write about the different things you did in the correct order using time words to help you order your diary entry - first, then, next, after that, finally. Do you remember the story ‘Whatever Next’ by Jill Murphy that we learnt about in our rainbow reading lessons earlier this term? At home this week you are going to do some writing linked to this story. Here is a link to a CBeebies bedtime stories clip with someone reading the story – https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5wvke7 You can complete your writing tasks onto plain paper or inside the purple books which are part of your packs. Task 1 – Retelling the story Working with an adult retell the story using babble gabble. Babble gabble is where one person starts retelling the story and after a few sentences you swap and the other person takes over retelling the story. Once you have practiced retelling the story you could draw a story map showing what happens in the story. This is where you draw pictures to represent the different parts of the story, with arrows to link the pictures together. I have story mapped the first part of the story for you below, remember to include key words.

Week beginning 30/03/20

EnglishHave you updated your diary for what you did during your first week at home? Remember to write about the different things you did in the correct order using time words to help you order your diary entry - first, then, next, after that, finally.

Do you remember the story ‘Whatever Next’ by Jill Murphy that we learnt about in our rainbow reading lessons earlier this term? At home this week you are going to do some writing linked to this story. Here is a link to a CBeebies bedtime stories clip with someone reading the story – https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5wvke7

You can complete your writing tasks onto plain paper or inside the purple books which are part of your packs.

Task 1 – Retelling the storyWorking with an adult retell the story using babble gabble.

Task 2 – Diary writingRevisit your story map to remind you of the key parts of the story. Today you are going to write a diary entry. Remember when writing a diary entry you write as the character so today you are going to become Baby Bear. Retell the events of his adventure writing in the first person. Remember to include description of the things he sees and how he feels. E.g. This evening I went on the most wonderful adventure! I have always wanted to visit the moon and tonight my dream came true. Mummy didn’t want me to go because it was too

close to bath time, but the moon was glowing so brightly tonight I just had to go! First I found the most amazing rocket hidden under the stairs. It was a bit dusty but I soon sorted it out. Next I found the perfect space helmet just lying on the kitchen draining board and some bright yellow space boots just sitting on the door mat. Remember to record the different story events in the correct order, using time words to help you order your diary entry - first, then, next, after that, finally.

Task 3 - Descriptive writingWe have done lots of work on using adjectives (describing words) in our writing to make it interesting to read. Can you think of adjectives to describe the moon/space? Draw a picture of the moon and record your exciting adjectives around it. Imagine you are baby bear – what did you see on the moon? I have included the picture below to help you. E.g. bumpy dusty moon, deep dark moon craters, sparkling stars. You could then use these adjectives to record sentences describing the moon/space scene below.

Task 4 – Grammar lessonIn year two we learn about different types of sentences. Commands are sentences that tell you to do something. They can be found within instructions and are often a bit bossy. With an adult play Simon Says to practice giving and following commands. After each command identify the bossy verb (doing action word) e.g. stand up, sit down, clap your hands, clean your teeth. You could record the commands your parents give you as part of your daily routine. E.g. Go and get dressed. Make your bed. Tidy Your bedroom.

Task 5 - spellingsFor your spelling homework this week please learn the following spellings - want, watch, wander, squash, quality, quarrel, clapped, clapping, dropped, dropping. Please discuss that the /o/ sound is being made by the letter ‘a’ in some of these words and that when the suffixes –ing and –ed are added to a word the final letter (consonant) is doubled. Remember to write a sentence including each word. E.g. I watched a film with Mummy

Maths

Mental Maths activities ● Practice counting on and back from different start number e.g. 25 - 26, 27, 28, 29,

30 and 25 - 24, 23, 22, 21, 20, 19. If you are finding this tricky please use the hundred square below to support your counting.

● Practice counting in 2s up to 20. Remember all numbers in the twos count are even.

● Practice your two times tables – remember to use your counting in twos learning to help you. You could sing the following song to help you learn your two times tables - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yf3xgE8wMc

● Odd and even numbers - can you sort odd and even numbers to 20. You could share toy cars, sweets or pencils to help you find out if a number shares equally into two groups.

● Number bonds - number bonds are pairs of numbers that you recognise the answer to instantly. Please use the number bonds section of the following game to practice your number bonds to 10, 20 and 100. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Length and measurement

Task 1 – Exploring lengthFind your school shoe and put this into the middle of the floor. Now go on a hunt around your home looking for objects that are longer and shorter in length than your shoe. See if you can find 5 objects shorter than your shoe and 5 objects longer than your shoe. During your hunt remember to use the vocabulary ‘longer/greater’ and ‘shorter/smaller’ to describe the length of the objects. Once you have done this you could compare the lengths of the objects using the greater than > and smaller < than symbols. See my example below –

Page 4: molehillprimaryacademy.org.ukmolehillprimaryacademy.org.uk/.../03/Week-beginning-3… · Web viewNext I found the perfect space helmet just lying on the kitchen draining board and

Task 2 – Ordering objects by length and measuring in cmFind 6 objects of different lengths e.g. a teddy, a toy car, some colouring pencils, a board game, a book and an action figure. Order the objects from longest to shortest – remember to use the language of longer and shorter to describe the objects as you order them. Parents please question your child about which object is the longest/shortest and which objects are longer or shorter than others.

Once you have ordered the objects please use a ruler to measure their length using the example below -

You could record your measurements by drawing a picture of the toy you are measuring and recording its length in cm.

Task 3 – Measuring lengths in cmParents please could you either draw some lines of different lengths or cut strips of paper to different lengths for children to measure in cm’s using a ruler. Using the example above remind your child of the correct way to use a ruler. If children are measuring strips of paper they could record the length in cm’s onto the strips of paper and then order these from longest to shortest.

Task 4 – Recording length in cmUsing a ruler draw lines of different lengths and label them. Remember to record cm next to your measurements so that we know you have measured in centimetres. You could also challenge yourself to draw a square where all sides are 4cm long and a rectangle that has long sides measuring 8cm and short sides measuring 5cm.

Task 5 - Problems Please discuss the following problems with your child. You could print off or copy out the problems for your child to complete. Please discuss that 1metre is equal to 100cm when solving the final problems.

Inquiry

In your packs you have lots of tasks to complete linked to space, astronauts and the solar system. Please continue working through these. You could also complete some research on the astronaut Tim Peake. You could watch some videos about the time he spent on the international space station using the following website - https://timpeake.esa.int/

You could also design your own space buggy. Here is a photo of one to help you with your designs, remember to label the different parts of your space buggy.

If you have junk modelling and art materials at home you could also make your own moon buggy.
