DESCRIPTION: The Montgomery County Planning Department in Silver Spring has an opening for a planner coordinator to lead the transportation planning efforts in the rural and upper portions of Montgomery County, Maryland.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT DUTIES: The position of transportation planner coordinator will be involved in creating attractive and functional environments through the preparation of master plans and the review of development proposals. Ideal candidates must possess strong analytic capabilities and interest in all areas of transportation planning. Strong oral and written communication skills, interest and ability to communicate directly with the public on technical transportation planning issues, ability to handle multiple projects effectively, and the ability to work successfully in a multi-disciplinary setting are required. The position will be responsible for incorporating transitways, roadways, intersection improvements as well as bicycle, trail and pedestrian facilities into the transportation system for Montgomery County. The planner coordinator will apply transportation planning principles to the preparation of master plans and the review of zoning cases, preliminary plans, and site plans. The selected candidate will also be required to review traffic studies, compose traffic mitigation agreements, review plats and roadway design plans, ensure compliance with transportation planning guidelines and regulations, coordinate review activities with other agencies, prepare technical reports, deliver presentations to the Planning Board, attend community meetings, and respond to information requests from residents, developers, planners, engineers, attorneys and public officials. Fieldwork and occasional evening meetings are required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications

1. Masters degree in planning, architecture, parks, engineering, environmental science, or equivalent disciplines related to job function and three years of progressively responsible

professional level planning experience at the journey level; OR an equivalent combination of

education and experience.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Planning experience specific to transportation planning is preferred.
