Minster of India, Sh. NarendraModi, on 15th of August, 2014and it was officially launched on2nd of October, 2014.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan isthe country’s biggest cleanlinessdrive. It aims to accomplish thevision of CLEAN INDIA by 2nd ofOctober 2019; the 150thbirthday of Sh. MahatmaGandhi, our beloved Father ofthe Nation.

The Prime Minister declared thatevery Indian should realizeB a p u ’s d re a m o f c l e a nsurroundings and this missionaims to bring the fadingGandhian ideal back into publicimagination.

The Prime Minister encouragedevery citizen to dedicate 100

hours a year i.e. 2 hours a weekfor voluntary cleanliness work.He also urged all Corporates tocome forward and support thismission.

MMTC has had a CSR focussince 2006-07 when it firstcame out with a formal CSRPolicy. The focus areas laiddown in this policy were –

• Infrastructure development(Education and PrimaryHealthcare)

• Literacy Promotion

• Promotion of Indian Art,Sports and Culture

• Response toNaturalCalamities

• Environmental Care andConcern

sensitive towards environmentalcare. MMTC comes forwardand extends support towardsenvironmental upkeep; and toensure continuity in approachand to make progress in aspecific direction, the Companyhas laid down a road map forthe next five years wherein theSwachh Bharat campaign willbe a major component.

FACTS

• Only 32.7% of rura lhouseholds have access totoilets

• This has led to various otherproblems like high mortalityamong children, spread ofinfections and diseases,even rapes of young girlswho go to deserted placesto relieve themselves.

• Slum dwellers in cities haveno access to running wateror toilets.

MMTC Initiatives forEnvironmental Care

MMTC’s operations by its verynature do not cause anyecological damage, since theCompany has not undertakenany activity adversely affectingthe environment or causing anyecological damage. However asa responsible corporate citizenMMTC has chosen to contributeto the environment throughvarious measures aimed towardsmaintenance of ecologicalbalance.

In the past years, MMTC, underits CSR policy, has undertakenvarious initiatives to ensureconservation of environment.The highlights of such initiativesare as under:

• In addition to maintenance of cleanliness within the office,MMTC in the past, hasplanted saplings in the areasof Bellary (Karnataka), Duburiand Barbil (Odisha) andcontinues to maintain a“ g r e e n e n v i r o n m e n t ”th rough p lacement o fgreenery / potted plants atappropriate places in andaround all its operational areas

• MMTC has undertakenconstruction of two checkdams in Odisha to ensureavailability of water all yearround for irrigation purposes;and it has provided waste

dumpers at municipal sites inBellary to encourage betterwaste management

• MMTC undertook revival of aw a t e r b o d y ( t h r o u g hrainwater harvesting) in Delhi.The village around the lakefaced problems like WaterLogging, Low Ground WaterLevel and Dried up tube wells.M M T C t h r o u g h i t sintervention helped solve thisproblem and helped thevillagers get water supply intheir houses.

• MMTC also implemented rain water harvesting system at theRegina Mundi School (Goa)which is located at the top ofthe Chicalim Village plateau,which is at a considerableheight above sea level and hashad a shortage of watersupply even though Goa hasabundant ra infa l l . Theconstruction of the rainwaterharvesting system enabled theschool to have water for about200 days i.e. 100 days during

the monsoon (from June toSeptember) and 100 days ofstored water in the postmonsoon period.

• MMTC has tied up with NGOCHINTAN which deals withwaste management fordisposal of its office waste.Office waste is handed over toC h i n t a n w h i c h t h e nsegregates this waste at acent ra l i zed fac i l i t y forrecycling or disposal. A largeamount of old /non usableelectrical items and E-wastehas accumulated over theyears. This E-waste is given toChintan as part of MMTC’s

CSR activity. The disposal ofthis waste results in bothenvironmental protection andgenerates revenue which willbe used for education of thewaste handlers’ children,especially for the girl child.

• Poor sanitation in schoolshampers students' growthand development. The lack of private sanitation facilities forgirls discourages parents fromsending girls to school andcontributes to the dropoutrate. MMTC has createdsanitation and drinking waterfacilities in various schools andhas also dug borewells toensure availability of water inthe toilets.

• MMTC during the previousyear introduced energye f f i c i e n c y m e a s u r e sconsequent to an energy auditconducted by M/s EnergyEff ic iency Serv ices Ltd.Accordingly old electricalequipments of CO & DROwere replaced with star-ratedones to save on electricitycost, and installation ofPhotovoltaic Solar Panels inDRO is in progress at this time.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyaanat MMTC

At MMTC Corporate Office, TheSwachh Bharat Abhiyaancommenced from Sept. 25th2014. Posters were placed atthe entrance and at variouslocations within the officeh i g h l i g h t i n g M M T C ’scommitment towards the callgiven by the Hon’ble PM. Theposters were aimed at creatinga w a r e n e s s a m o n g t h eemployees of the importance ofthis drive and for soliciting theirparticipation for making thisdrive successful.

A cleanliness drive under theSwachh Bharat Abhiyaan wasorganized on 02.10.2014 inwhich the CMD and theDirectors took the lead andthere was an overwhelmingp a r t i c i p a t i o n f r o m t h eemployees of MMTC. This wasfollowed by a short program inwhich the CMD administeredthe Swachhta Shapath. ShriP u r u s h o t t a m A g a r w a l ,Professor at JNU and formerMember, UPSC, and Ms BhartiChaturvedi, Director, ChintanEnvironmental and ResearchGroup, which specializes inwaste management, wereinvited to share their views on“maintenance of a cleanenvironment” with the MMTCemployees. The speakersemphasized the importance ofhygiene and cleanliness in ourday to day lives.

• MMTC is encouraging itsemployees to take upvolunteering with NGOsinvolved in keeping theenvironment clean and green,wherein they can undertakevoluntary c leaning incommunity premises neartheir respective homes oroffice.

• At the MMTC residential colony in New Delhi, steps have been taken to ensure segregation of waste to promote recycling. However, as part of the five year plan, steps will be taken to ‘compost’ waste and use itfor horticultural purposes. In addition, it is proposed to invest in a ‘water harvesting system’ in theresidential colony and to build a facility for ‘treatment and recycling of waste water’ for horticulturalpurposes.

Mere launching a program is not enough, results matter. It is not only an individual who can make it asuccess, participation of all employees is of utmost importance. Thus it is important to ensure that theinterest of all is sustained and they work towards this goal in a concerted manner.

India will definitely be a clean country in coming years provided all of us participate in this Swachh BharatMission in a holistic manner.

Around tenofficers and staff participated inthe competition. S/Shri D.J.Madhusudan, Manager, S.Rahim Basha, Dy. Manager(Vig), and J.V. Bheemasen Rao,Manager (F&A) won the first,

All staff and officers togethercleaned the office premises aswell as building premises inaccordance with the pledgethey had taken in letter andspirit. The society occupantswere apprised of the mission

and requested not to litter andto keep the premises clean. Old records from the office wereshifted to Bhagvati Nagar recordroom as part of this cleanlinessdrive.

Elocution and essay competitionswere also held on this occasion.Chief Manager from State Bankof Hyderabad Shri Abhay Ijafdarwas invited to evaluate andjudge the competitions onvarious topics like 2019’s CleanIndia Scenario, Cleanliness isNext to Godliness, and MissionClean India. We have proposed to conducttwelve campaigns in a year, inwhich 100 hours of SwachhBharat initiatives will becovered. Each month anassessment is going to beconducted. Shri RP Vaishya in his talkdetailed the importance ofGovernment Notification/Order

of 2012 containing list of 358items manufactured by MSMEsector and also the procurementof 20% items out of which 4% items are to be procured fromSC/ST entrepreneurs. ShriVaishya informed that suchprocurement is mandatoryw.e.f. 01.04.2015 for allGovernment Departments andPSUs and failure on this accountwill be reported to Secretary,MSME. Shri Vaishya alsorequested that MMTC shouldmake all efforts to ensurecompliance of the instructions

Shri Amit Tuteja highlighted thero l e o f NS IC in Pub l i cProcurement Policy, 2012. Heinformed the gathering thatthere are various schemessponsored by the Governmentfor MSMEs registered withDistrict Industries Centre who

can approach NS IC fo rpromotion of sale of theirproducts. NSIC can makearrangements for marketingtheir products, arrangement offinance facility, provision oflatest technology, organisingtrade fairs for their products,etc. Shri Tuteja requested thevendors present in the programto approach NSIC for any suchfacility required by them.

This was followed by a question-answer session and the variousd o u b t s r a i s e d b y t h evendors/MMTC officials wereclarified by the officials from

MSME and NSIC. Further, ShriVaishya and Shri Tuteja offereda s s i s t a n c e r e l a t i n g t oapplicability of the PublicProcurement Policy and alsopromotion of the products ofMSME sector.

The Meet was concluded with avote of thanks by Ms. AnitaGuptrishi, AGM. It is expectedthat this Program will go a long way in ensuring the complianceof MMTC with the guidelines ofMSME Ministry.

nequality weaves serious strains and tensions in the social fabric and this entailed the corporate worldto moot the idea of Corporate Social Responsibility. The idea behind CSR has been to sensitise thecorporate /business entities for their surroundings and make them organically involved in uplifting the

marginalised population. CSR, seen as a bridge between economics and ethics has been made mandatorythrough a legislation in India. The ongoing debate on this mandatory provision questions the very essence ofcorporate social responsibility, which ought to be a voluntary contribution from the business to its variousstakeholders. However, in view of the ethical displacement theory by Richard De George, which states thatfirms have a tendency to indulge in unethical behaviour in order to cut their cost and the socio-economic conditions of a developing nation, this mandatory provision of allocation of two percent of net profits of thecompany has been a welcome move. The question here is would social responsibility of the businessterminate after allocating some meager funds for social activities?

Social Responsibility of a business should neither be cast as just anotherfunction of business nor should be used as façade to cover up the realbusiness motive. A B Caroll’s Corporate Social ResponsibilityPy ramid sugges t s the importance of an economicbase to fulfil the other responsibilities of legal,ethical and philanthropic. However, if this economicbase is strengthened with unethical source, wouldthe company be called a good corporate citizeneven if it contributes substantial amount toCSR? Similar instance can be quoted from the WallStreet financial crisis of 2008. The Multi NationalBanks targeted to exploit the poor population andearn a profit on that account. Here, again,would it make any sense if the Banks allocate CSRfunds for poverty alleviation? It is a classic case of coveringup corporate wrong doings with a false veneer of CSR activities. Inthe act of robbing Peter to pay Paul, both Paul as well as Peter weredeprived and Robin Hood became the real beneficiary after the financialdownturn! That is to say, means should never be neglected in the pursuance of the end. Unless themeans are ethical, it would be difficult to justify the integrity of the objective. The social responsibility ofbusiness would attain a more meaningful status if it evolves simultaneously with the conception of thebusiness idea. Research has to be done before an idea gets transformed into action, and if it is found to bedetrimental to any of the stakeholders, it should be terminated at the inception itself.

Acomparison of the responses ofBritish Petroleum, responsiblefor the oil spill at Gulf of Mexicoand Dow Chemicals, whichacquired Union Carbide -infamous for the Bhopal GasT r a g e d y , w o u l d w e l lsubstantiate this. Anotherexample is that of the corporatehijacking of water resource bythe Coca-Cola Company. TheCompany’s bottling plants inP lach imada , Kera la andMedhiganj, Uttar Pradesh wereaccused of illegally extractingmillions of litres of clean water,

problems of inequality, povertyand hunger can be alleviated toa great extent if the entirecorporate world displays suchsimple gestures as paying thetaxes and avoiding unethicalcorporate lobby ing. Theco rpo ra t e ph i l an th rop i ccontribution in the form of bigbucks to NGOs would help ingetting tax exemption andpublicity, but the companycannot be justified as acorporate citizen until andunless the ethical dimension isfulfilled. Milton Friedman’sstatement, “the business ofbusiness is to do business” wasthe buzzword of a bygone era. Itwould hold no good in this age of sustainable development,environmental regard, humanrights awareness and socialconsciousness. Survival of thefittest is the norm, andcompanies that would fit CSRsincerely in their day to dayactivities would well survive.

It is adualistic economy characterisedby skyscrapers on one side andslums on the other. Companieshave huge assets and resourcesbecause of which they havecons iderab le power andinfluence in the society. Thispower and influence shouldbe used in theright directionso tha t thee t h i c a ldimension ofC o r p o r a t eResponsibil itygets highlightedmore than theeconomic one.The pressing
