My wish for all is that Christmas is a time for giving. Research shows that people who give without expectation are the most psychologically healthy in our society today.

Giving is an expression of our love. We give in many ways with our supportive words, our listening, attention and giving of our time and of course through material giving too. Giving materially, emotionally and physically is the glue that holds people together and is a way to renew love for one another, create lasting cherished memories, deepen relationships and create psychological health and happiness for ourselves. Giving is also a great de-stressor.

I hope this busy holiday season allows you time to spend with friends and family, and a little time just for you. Stay safe and have a blessed Christmas season and a healthy, prosperous new year.

Michigan Municipal Treasurer’s insTiTuTe

The MMTa Board of Directors, education and professional Development committees, are pleased to invite you to attend the Michigan Municipal Treasurers association Basic and advanced institutes. it’s time to mark your calendars to “save the dates”!

The objectives of the MMTa are to provide education, information and dedication to the development of our municipal treasury members. Our goal for the institutes is to offer quality education that meets the basic level of education, skill and knowledge for those new to the profession seeking certification; as well as the more experienced treasurers who want advanced education for recertification. With that in mind, the Institutes are designed to meet the accreditation requirements for education points for the Michigan Certified Professional Treasurer (MicpT) and association of public Treasurers of the united states and canada's (APT US&C's), Certified Public Finance Administrator (CPFA) and Advanced Certified Public Finance Administrator (ACPFA) certifications. College credit may also be earned.

MMTa Basic institute – april 21 through april 26, 2013The Basic institute is designed to enhance the overall job performance of the treasurer in small and large municipalities and is required for treasurers seeking the MiCPT certification and recommended for those seeking the CPFA certification.

MMTa advanced institute – May 15 through May 17, 2013The advanced institute offers continuing education that prepares participants to perform complex treasurer duties and meets the requirements for treasurers seeking to renew the MiCPT and CPFA certifications. The Basic institute and advanced institute will both be held at the comfort inn hotel and conference center located on the campus of cMu in Mt. pleasant. MMTa membership is required to attend and the advanced institute is only available for MMTa members who have completed the three-year Basic institute.

The cost for the Basic institute is $550.00 and the cost for the advanced institute is $325.00. scholarships are available if fees present a problem. To see if you qualify, contact Barbara Fandell at [email protected] or 989-875-3200.

The committees have planned and worked hard on creating these programs and you will not want to miss out! The MMTi not only provides you with quality education, but a valuable network of professional treasurers and friends. The schedules for both Basic and advanced Institutes will be finalized and posted on the website along with other updates soon.

On behalf of all the members of the MMTa Board of Directors, the education committee and professional Development committee, it is my pleasure to to invite you to enjoy an educational experience you will never forget. sincerely,

It was a pleasure to have Shari Freidenrich, the President of the APT US&C, attend the Michigan Annual Fall Conference. What a great representative for the APT US&C. She's full of energy and ideas for the future of the organization.

Shari asked that we share with the members of the APT US&C about our organization here in Michigan.

The Michigan Municipal Treasurers Association is a nonprofit organization for treasury professionals. We are dedicated to a forum for our members to exchange ideas and concepts. Our objectives are to provide information and dedication to the development of our Municipal Treasury Members. Our Michigan Association's mission is to provide our membership with the tools needed to meet the diversified challenges facing them by providing education, services, continuing professional development and ethical standards.

Our Board consists of eleven members; six officers and five directors. The directors each chair a committee. The committees are Legislative, Membership, Newsletter, and Education. The Associate Director acts as the liaison between the associates and the board and helps with educational speakers.

The MMTA offers classes throughout the year including a Spring Seminar, MMTA Basic Institute, MMTA Advanced Institute, MMTA in the UP, Annual Fall Conference, and day seminars. All of these sessions offer participants the requirements for seeking their CPFA certification.

The MMTA also has the Professional Development committee which has crafted curriculum that will provide the requirements for the Michigan Certified Professional Treasurer certification, MiCPT. This committee has come up with guidelines for certifying and recertifying our Michigan members. The idea of the MiCPT certification was to develop and implement a Michigan program that would complement the national certification.

The MMTA has implemented a Listserv program which enables all members to network, ask questions, make suggestions, and get any help they need from their fellow members. This program has been a real asset to our members.

Last of all, we are very proud to have two of our members serving on the APT US&C Board; Matthew Horning, Vice-President and Margaret Birch, Director and Chair of the Professional Accreditation Committee. We also have Annge Horning, Chair of the Cash Handling Certification Committee, and Chair of the

CPFIM/ACPFIM Committee and Blinda Baker, Parliamentarian, and Chair of the CPFA/ACPFA Committee. Their involvement in the APT US&C has truly benefited our Michigan Municipal Treasurers Association.

So you’re a new treasurer. The election is over, you have taken all your signs down, taken your oath of office, and you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and start work. NOW WHAT? Do you need training? A network of knowledgeable treasurers to ask questions? We have the answer to these and other treasury questions. They can be found by obtaining a membership with Michigan Municipal Treasurers Association. MMTA is going to be at the MTA Annual Education Conference and Expo on January 24, 2013 in Detroit. Come to the luncheon for treasurers and get an introduction to MMTA, meet other treasurers and start networking. Need more incentive to join MMTA other than education, networking and mentoring? If you attend the luncheon and become a new member with MMTA on January 24th, you will receive $50 off the MMTI Basic Institute. What a great deal! See you at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center!

MMTA NOVEMBER FINANCIAL STATEMENT

As the 48th President of the Association of Public Treasurers of the US and Canada (APT US&C), I was honored to attend the 34th Annual Conference of the MMTA at Boyne Mountain Resort. The

MMTA coordinated 2 1/2 days of excellent education classes for public treasury officials, including, internal controls and fraud prevention, bankruptcy, and an all important legislative and economic update. I arrived in beautiful Northern Michigan on Saturday and met with MMTA Board members. On Sunday, I participated in the ever popular golf tournament and attended the Past President’s Welcome Reception that night. During the next few days, I tried to connect with as many MMTA members as possible and provided an update on APT US&C activities and participated in the installation of the

new officers at the banquet on Tuesday night. As APT’s largest state affiliate, I acknowledged the four Michigan members who are currently involved in APT in leadership roles, and I look forward to working closely with MMTA to continue to provide quality treasury resources to the MMTA members. An unexpected benefit to my visit was the beautiful fall foliage I observed, and will not forget. Thank you for the hospitality of the MMTA Board and members.
