Brian Kiessling, MD (Traverse Anesthesia Associates) ended his two-year term as MMC Medical Staff President as of May 30, 2018. From 2014-2016 he served as President-Elect and Chair of the Medical Executive Commit-tee, and prior was the Chair of the Anesthesia Department.
As a legacy to his presidency, Dr. Kiessling was instrumental in overseeing the challenging
project of revising the Medical Staff Bylaws. The existing bylaws were more than 20 years old and multiple factors – including technology advances, increased role of Advanced Practice Providers, growth of the medical center and health system, and evolving Joint Commission and CMS requirements – necessitated modifications and improve-ments to reflect best practices, legislative and regulatory changes, as well as enhance hospital-physician alignment. The 18-month project culminated in successful adoption of the revised bylaws on Feb. 28, 2018.

Munson Medical Center ranked among 750 hospitals nationally awarded ‘A’ safety grades from the Leapfrog Group for spring 2018.
Leapfrog Group is one of several organizations who examine hospital quality and safety.
Munson Healthcare Vice President of Quality and Safety Tom Peterson, MD, FAAP, said the grades for the health care system’s hospitals reflect a continual focus on patient safety and quality care.
“We are pleased to see the high quality care reflected in Leapfrog grades in this survey,” Dr. Peterson said. “Every day across the system our teams are working hard to provide the best care for our patients, to ensure we have the right processes and procedures in place for patient safety, and to promote a quality outcome.”
Munson Medical Center joined Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital, Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital, and Otsego Memorial Hospital in receiving an “A” grade from the organization.

New MMC Bylaws Require Providers to Regularly Read Munson Outlook Email
One of the provisions that went into effect with the new Munson Medical Center Bylaws is that all MMC credentialed providers maintain and monitor a hospital-based email account (mhc.net).
“At MMC we need to regularly, securely communicate important information to nearly 800 providers,” said Medical Staff Services Manager, Katryna Glettler. “Given constant changes in personal emails that aren’t shared with us (Gmail, Yahoo, AT&T, Charter, etc.), we know we miss many. Maintaining a standard Munson Healthcare email is the most efficient, effective way to ensure we reach all providers.”
Credentialed staff that don’t currently have a Munson Healthcare email will be contacted regarding setting one up on a section-by-section basis this year. In the meantime, if you would like to request a mhc.net email, please contact Katryna at [email protected] or 231-935-5891.

During his tenure, Dr. Kiessling also played a significant role in the development of the Profes-sional Standards Committee, a multi-specialty council that proactively and collegially deals with situations where variations in clinical practice or profes-sional standards are suspected or observed.
“The Committee has been lauded as a valuable resource for medical staff leaders and staff members alike,” said Katryna Glettler, Manager of Medical Staff Services. “I cannot express
enough our gratitude for Dr. Kiessling’s responsiveness, enthusiasm, and integrity. It’s been a wonderful experience working with him the past four years.”
As President, he also sat on the MMC Board of Trustees.
“I convey our sincere appreci-ation to Dr. Kiessling for his service on the Board,” said Chair Patrick Heintz. “His commit-ment to quality, serving on both the Quality & Patient Safety Committee as well as the MMC Board Quality Committee, over
the last several years exempli-fies his dedication to Munson Medical Center and its patients. His direction and leadership role providing a bridge between administration and the medical staff has been extraordinary.”
Dr. Kiessling passed the Presi-dent’s torch to Joseph Will, MD, (Pulmonary & Critical Care).
“On behalf of the Medical Staff, I extend thanks and appreciation for the time Dr. Kiessling has given and continues to give to the hospital, the medical staff, and our community,” said
