Continued from page 1faculty. I attribute much of my successto a sound beginning at the New MexicoMilitary Institute, much like you all aredoing today. You are already in the toppercentile of others your age, enrolledin a very prestigious school, and the traitsyou are learning here will serve youwellfor the rest of your life.

Brigadier General Laster defined leadersas those who help others do what theydont want to do, affording them theopportunity to achieve their goals--doingwhat they truly want to do--noting threevery important key elements:

First, know your stuff. Be the bestthat you can be. Talk to yourclassmates, and when you leave MMA- stay in touch. You have manyinternational students here atMMAlearn from them about theircountry and culture. This is soimportant in todays global economy.Secondly, be your own mana manof character and integrity. Thatmeans doing the right thing for theright reason, even when you knowthat someone else is not watching. Bevery careful to speak the truth, andlet your word be your bond. Theremay come a time when you dont knowwhether something is right orwrongthats okay. When thishappens, ask yourself what someoneyou consider a mentor would do may be a teacher, drill instructor, yourmom or dad.Third, take care of your people.Leaders eat last. Leaders know theirpeople and show genuine concern forthem. Share adversityin otherwords, get dirty with them. Anexample of this would be someonewho owns a trucking firm put onthe overalls and do what they doyouwill be a leader in their eyes. Dontever put your own comfort andwelfare ahead of your peoples. Behonorable in character, and take careof the people around you.

In summary, BrigadierGeneral Laster cited fourthings he lives by: Trustyour instincts; dontcause your own friction;focus down; and dowhats right. You cannever be wrong bydoing whats right.

Following a resonatinground of applause, CadetBattalion CommanderEdgar Steeg presentedBrigadier General Lasterwith a Texas-sized tokenof appreciation onbehalf of MMAs Corpsof Cadets. I am often asked my view on what isthe most important at Marine MilitaryAcademy - academics or military train-ing. This is a question that does nothave a simple answer as the Academicand Military Departments cannot beseparated and their importance asindividual departments cannot, andshould not, be considered. The two arelinked together in a co-dependantrelationship designed to foster anenvironment where young men canrealize their full potential as scholars, citizens, leaders, and patriots. TheAcademic Departments role increating this environment where youngmen grow into disciplined, morallystrong, college-ready young men whoare prepared for responsible leadershipforces faculty and staff to break fromthe modern paradigm of educationwhere success is measured by a statemandated standardized test andaverage daily attendance. TheAcademic Department does not simplyrely on chalkboards, student desks, andtextbooks to succeed in our mission. Wemove beyond hallway bannersproclaiming that All students cansucceed!. Faculty model andreinforce the Core Values which are sosuccessfully introduced to the cadets bythe military staff and challenge eachcadet to extend their performancebeyond the limits of normal students.

Academics at the Marine MilitaryAcademy are grounded in the coredisciplines of English, Mathematics,

Social Science, Science, and ForeignLanguage. All electives available tostudents outside of these disciplines arefocused on skills necessary in todayswork and academic environments.Marine Military Academy cadets arechallenged by Advanced Placementcourses, Dual Enrollment courses, andrequired additional study within thecore to ensure that they have theknowledge necessary to be successfulin any post secondary environment.Much more important than thisknowledge, however, is their completetransformation into responsiblelearners, informed citizens, andpracticed leaders.

As we are all aware, technology anddiscovery create new knowledge at anear exponential rate. What is foundbetween the covers of a textbook todayis likely incomplete or incorrect by thetime it reached publication. MarineMilitary Academy cadets are preparedto deal with this phenomenon success-

fully because they have developedwithin themselves the ability tothinkproblem solveand convertdata into useful information. They donot rely on rote memorization and therecitation of facts to succeed. MarineMilitary Academy faculty understandsthat the material presented, thepresentations made, and theassignments collected are merely toolsfor developing those qualities withinour cadets required to negotiate arapidly changing environment and leadthose less fortunate in the process. Thefaculty stand at the front of the class, not as lecturers so often encounteredwithin schools, but as examples ofintegrity, responsible citizens, andleaders. Cadets are not passivevessels in the classroom but an activeand integral part of the educationalprocess. Marine Military Academycadets take responsibility forthemselves and their classmates asthey navigate their way to the collegeof their choice.

CADET DAVID RODRIGUEZ

Welcome back, cadets! I know that itis hard to admit how short of a breakChristmas was. We are refreshed, recharged and ready to hit the lastsemester hard and wild. It is great tosee the cadets with such lively spirits. We have two months until SpringBreak; it is a long time, but at the sametime, this semester is a busy semester.

Even though schoolwork is important, standardized tests are also verycrucial. If you are taking the SAT andACT tests that are coming up, goodluck on that. Keep your grades up, andkeep your parents happy.

It is about time to hear from collegesif you applied early. I believe manyseniors have already been accepted totheir college of choice. You still haveto keep your grades up; colleges tendto look at your senior years grade too.If you havent applied, hurry to do so.As I mentioned before, applying earlygives you a lot of advantages overother applicants who dont. Mrs.Farris in MMAs College Room isalways there to help you.Congratulations and cheers to allcollege-admitted seniors.

Next up, we will have an importantinspection. I believe this inspectionis a good chance to show the Boardand others how we have improvedover the school year. As we do eachyear, the Corps of Cadets have theAlumni and General H.M SmithParade coming up. I know that thecadets will give their best shot at eachof these parades.

Basketball season started a fewmonths ago. So far, the Leathernecksare doing GREAT...both JV andVarsity teams are on the winningstreak! They won already three games

against Port Isabel High School,Hope Academy, and Valley ViewHigh School. They are really givingtheir heart to achieve victory.Determination will guideLeathernecks to the top. I believe itsgoing to be a very good year for theBasketball Team. Show yourmotivation, Leathernecks...we expecta lot more wins from you guys!

After these brief couple of months, the third quarter will be over already. We have already gone through somuch stuff successfully; nearly all thehard times are done. All we have isone more quarter. This semester willfly by. Hang in there. One down, andthere is one more to go. The race untilSenior graduation isnt over yet, sokeep your heads up!

This is Battalion PAO ...SOUNDING OFF!

ALPHA COMPANYCADET SERGEANT MAJOR DAVID RODRIGUEZJUNIORSon of Mr. and Mrs. Jamie Rodriguez of Sylmar, CAAs a third year cadet at Marine Military Academy I have earned therank of Cadet Sergeant Major for the Corps of Cadets. I am working hard to earn the rankand responsibility of Cadet Battalion Commander in my senior year. In my spare time I box - this is also my third year on theLeatherneck Boxing Team where Im proud to serve as Team Captain. I also enjoy participat-ing in the Boy Scouts and KEY Club. When I graduate from here, I hope to attend the UnitedStates Naval Academy and upon graduation from there become a U.S. Marine Corps officer. With Marine Military Academy behind me, I know I can do whatever I set my mind to do.
