President’s Message

Happy Spring! It’s been an exciting year so far for Metro Milwaukee SHRM and there is much more to come. Just like Spring, it’s a time of constant change for our country and our profession. We hope that MM SHRM assists you in weathering change.

Our leadership team has been focused in increasing member engagement through providing high quality programs. March 7th was a special day for us. We held our first ever HR Executive Insights event which brought together five outstanding HR executives for a panel discussion (more details on the next page). To give back to our members, we chose to make the event complimentary even though it will likely be one of the highest value programs of the year.

The panelists shared their journeys to leadership, provided advice and gave insight into the challenges their organizations are facing. I left feeling inspired and proud to be a HR professional. What we do really matters.

The panelists shared so much valuable information but below are some highlights that stood out:

• Focus on progress over perfection. • Don’t always focus on the new thing in HR. Instead focus on and

understand business and their challenges. HR typically creates supply. Instead create demand.

• Focus on what will make your organization better and what can move the company forward.

• Be agile, take risks and be resourceful. • Help the organization to find the right solution – set aside your

competitive nature. • Go big or go home – take it to the next level. • Embrace your role and handle your role with respect and dignity. What

we do affects people’s lives – we are dreammakers. Don’t take it lightly.

We are extremely thankful to our panelists for the time and insight they invested in our members. We hope to continue our work in connecting with local HR leaders so we can have future events like the Executive Insights program.

NAAAHR

Metro Milwaukee SHRM continues to build our relationship with the NAAAHR – Milwaukee Chapter. To learn more about NAAAHR and upcoming events, click HERE.

Leadership Opportunities

One of the other benefits of membership is the opportunity to become a leader in your profession. We’ve all heard about someone who is described as having a “gift for leadership,” but we think there’s another perspective on the “gift.” We view the “gift” as something we can offer you rather than something you have to offer us. Put another way, a volunteer leadership role in Metro Milwaukee SHRM is the perfect place to hone your skills for setting agendas, leading discussions, making presentation, working with budgets, and more. The “gift” is the opportunity to learn from your peers and enhance your career by advancing your skills and network through leadership. Are you interested in learning more about leadership opportunities? Contact the Metro Milwaukee SHRM office to learn more.

WISHRM Announces Diversity Advocate Award Winners

Every year, the Wisconsin SHRM State Council searches for an organization to recognize for all their hard work in the areas of diversity, inclusiveness and workflex. We look for an organization that is a pioneer, leading innovative initiatives to make their workforce feel included, that their diverse backgrounds contribute to the organization’s competitive advantage and the work is accomplished in flexible ways that create an effective environment. It is the intent of the Wisconsin SHRM State Council to recognize and share these best practices so other organizations can learn and benefit from the shared knowledge. This year, the Wisconsin SHRM State Council was lucky enough to find not one, but two organizations worthy of such recognition. The 2016 Wisconsin SHRM Diversity, Inclusion and Workflex awards were presented to Gundersen Health System, based out of La Crosse, WI and Milwaukee Center for Independence, based out of Milwaukee, WI. Both organizations show commitment starting at the very top; the senior leadership groups embody these ideals and espouse a diverse, inclusive and effective culture. Both organizations are very active within their communities to bring this message of inclusiveness to those that use their services. And both organizations support this culture with training that fosters candid, open dialogue about the different issues facing the workface and the community. Here’s more about Milwaukee Center for Independence a repeat winner of the award located in our area…. Along with holding and participating in community events, the most recent efforts include:

• Creating Diversity Appreciation

• Month with the introduction of Crucial Cultural Conversations, providing a safe, semi-structured environment for employees to discuss diversity-themed topics.

• Facilitating a memorandum of understanding between Metro Milwaukee SHRM and the Milwaukee chapter of National Association of African-Americans in Human Resources (NAAAHR) with a goal of educating the HR community about the high rate of unemployment of African-Americans in Milwaukee.

• Partnering with Wheaton Franciscan HealthCare and Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, working collectively to diversity hiring practices in the health care industry.

• Establishing the Black Male Initiative to address high African-American male unemployment in Milwaukee, coupled with organizing a Black Male Summit to bring key community stakeholders together.

• Increasing community participation in events within the Black community, including the WNOV Radio Resource Fair (oldest and only radio show owned by an African-American firm with a primarily African-American leadership); Brain, Brawn & Body; and the Fellas Health Walk.

• Implementing a robust IT network that is accessible both on- and off-site, allowing individuals to log in from anywhere and seamlessly access materials they need even when not at the worksite, as well as offering laptops as an option for employees to encourage working remotely.

• Establishing an employee resource group (ERG) for working parents and chartering a soon-to-be established second ERG for African-American employees.

Corporate Sponsorship

We pride ourselves on the amount of educational programming that is available to our members but also recognize that not every great idea comes from one of our session leaders. At our various programs and events, in this newsletter and on the website, we welcome the participation of various sponsors who are looking to promote their products and services. Certainly, sponsorships help us support our programs and events, but the end-game of sponsorship is to help connect our members with new ideas – ones that can save time and money and solve problems.
