A Message from the Vice Principal

    Dear MLC Families,

The holiday season is upon us and as it draws near, I think of the

people and things in my life that I am thankful for, such as my

husband, sons, and good health. It is often we complain, but as

we listen to the news and hear stories of sorrow or see the mass

devastation from recent storms, we can all find something for

which we can be grateful. Take time to enjoy family and friends,

and if you have the means and/or the time, give of yourself to help

those in need. If you are in need, reach out and hands will be

extended. I wish you the best that this holiday season and the

seasons that follow have to offer!

  • LIBRARY NEWS Happily, many MLC students have checked out books. However, there are many

students whose books are overdue! Books which were due before October 15th have

been billed to individual students in Power School. Students can borrow books for 3

weeks at a time and must return previously borrowed books to borrow new books.

When students return books, the bills are removed! Students can create accounts in

the catalog system and track their due dates. They will need to visit the site

http://crec.follettdestiny.com and then click on create account. Their Patron ID

number is the same as their lunch number with a P added to the front (ex: P12345).

Please let me know if you need any help with this process at [email protected].

IB Learner Profile Trait of the Month of November

Caring They show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of

others. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive

difference to the lives of others and the environment.

Over the course of the month, MLC will be highlighting this area of the learner profile. Please

take some time with your student to review this trait and the positive influence it can bring to

your everyday life. Here at MLC, we will be celebrating those students who exhibit caring

behaviors. Your child could be one of our students of the month!

13 students from the Model UN after school program went on a field trip to New York City yesterday to tour the United Nations building and speak with representatives from Vietnam and the UN Security Council. A photo from outside the United Nations is attached, and many more will soon follow! Our students were outstanding representatives of MLC. Several teachers and World Affairs Council faculty commented on the professionalism of our students, the knowledge they had on the United Nations, and the quality of the questions they asked the representatives. The students had a great time and we should be proud of how seriously they approached this opportunity to learn!

The MLC First Fall JV Boys Soccer Season

It was with the greatest excitement that I received the news about the new JV boys soccer team. It was also

exciting for me to know that I was going to coach the team, something that I have always wanted to do at

MLC. Many of the students were also thrilled by the idea of playing soccer for the first time, while I was

thinking how they were going to compete if they did not have the basic fundamental skills to play against

more competitive players. I needed to design practices that suited the need of each one of my future players,

and teach them basic skills, the love for the game, discipline, and most of all, sportsmanship.

Our practices went well for the most part, but the games were better. Most of the things that I taught them

during the practices, they were able to apply them during official games. They immediately understood the

payoff of the practices -- the hard work and the discipline -- and they gave everything they had in each game.

They won most of the matches that they played, they tied a few, and as a result, they became a challenging

team to play throughout the CREC district tournament. Unfortunately, in an electrifying final game against

HMTCA, MLC lost 2 to 1.

For many of our students, living that experience became one of the most memorable times of their lives. I am

very proud of each one of them.

  • Middle School Cross Country Team

On behalf of myself and Kristine Howell, please join us in congratulating our JV Cross Country

team for a strong finish to their inaugural season with the CREC Championships. We raced

against four other CREC schools. Our girls team took home the second place trophy, which is

on display in the main office. Although our boys team did not place, we had some

phenomenal individual results. Justin Purcell finished third (with a personal record of 19

minutes flat), Isaiah Priester finished 6th, and Jonathan Barnes finished in10th place. Also

noteworthy was Lauren Starks, who completed the 3.1 mile course in a personal record time

of 32 minutes. She improved her time from the beginning of the season by over 10 minutes!

The athletes: Justin Purcell, Isaiah Priester, Jonathan Barnes, Sam Galarza-Ortiz, Hailie Percy-

Campbell, Ashleigh Mills-Govan, Lauren Starks, Tatiyana Biggs, Diandra Comer

    Best,

Coaches Greg Person and Kristine Howell

    Middle School X-Country Team

The MLC Middle School X-Country Team had an awesome Fall 2013 season. For the second year in a row, the boys team took home the CREC League Division Championship! Also, on October 24th , the MLC X-Country team also came in as 2nd place runner-ups in the Hartford Middle School Cross Country Championship, competing against 12 schools with over 150 student participants. MLC also made its name known at the CT Middle School Cross Country Championships, on November 2nd at Wickham Park in Manchester. Student athletes competed in a 1.7 mile race with hundreds of other Connecticut students. MLCS very own Devon Kramek and Jaden Rismay placed in the top 50 runners out of 581 male runners. Devon came in 7th overall with a time of 10:41.49, and Jaden finished in 37th place with a time of 11:32.08. Honorable mention for Outstanding Improvement is given to the following student athletes: for the Boys Team, Evan Brace, Malachy Campbell, Ben Mara, Jalen Pina, Timothy Hepler, David Rodriguez, Tyler Martin, and Raienro Reyes. For the Girls team: Grey McIntosh, Malvina Piziak, Samantha Itsou, and Angelique Ayala.

    Middle School Girls Soccer

The Middle School Girls Soccer Team had a successful 2013 season. The team was a good mix of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students that developed their skills this season. The returning players from last year, along with the new additions, all worked hard and were able to go into the CREC playoffs with a record that had the team in first place. After playing a tough game, we were ultimately defeated in the championship game against our rivals at Two Rivers. We were also able to advance within the Hartford Magnet School Division and make it into the playoffs. We were awarded the runner-up trophy within the CREC division. We look forward to next years season, and being one to the top contenders. Congratulations to all of the participants; their dedication and perseverence are what led to such a successful year. If you have experience with soccer and feel you could be an asset to the team, come and try out next year! Coaches Davis and Snyder
