MLA Format for Newspaper Articles

Newspaper Articles in General

Author, Arthur, Brian Author & Cathy Author. "Title of Article." Title of Newspaper [City Published if not indicated by the title of the paper] day month year: Edition, section numbers (if used): page numbers.

Note that in the above example there are three authors and only the firsts order is inverted

Single space between lines; double space between entries. Indent the second and following lines.

Leave blank those elements that are irrelevant or unavailable.

Cite the page number(s) of the article. For multiple page numbers, cite the first page number and the last page number separated by a hyphen, but omit repeated parts of the numbers (e.g., A3-4.). If your article is split between two pages, then cite the first page followed by a comma and then the second page (e.g., A1, C11). Sometimes a + is placed after the first page instead of the following page, as in the below example.

Place a period after the cited page number(s).

If there is more than one edition available for that date (as in an early and late edition of a newspaper, identify the edition following the date (e.g., 17 May 1987, late ed.:).

For online newspaper articles, include the date you accessed the article after the publication date (e.g., 25 Jan. 2001. 7 Nov. 2001); and, if necessary to conserve the integrity of the URL, include a line break followed by the article's website address in brackets and then a period.
