Tjipto Mangunkusumo, (born 1884—died March 8, 1942, Djakarta, Java), Indonesian nationalist leader whose resistance to Dutch colonial rule brought him exile and long imprisonment.

Tjipto Mangunkusumo was among the first Indonesian leaders to abandon the cultural approach of most early nationalist groups, which promoted distinctly Indonesian art, literature, and values. With E.F.E. Douwes Dekker and Suwardi Surjaningrat (later known as Ki Hadjar Dewantoro) he founded in 1911 the socialist Indies Party (Indische Partij), which was devoted to political action to attain independence. He resumed activity in Insulinde, the successor to the Indies Party, backing radical action such as the peasant resistance to taxes in the Solo princely lands.

The camel carried her 200 miles to a small village, where she was cared for until she was old enough to travel down the Nile River. A big boat then carried her across the Mediterranean Sea to the shores of France. A large hole was cut into the boat’s deck so Zarafa could stand up straight.

When they reached the shores of France, Paris was still 550 miles away! Zarafa had to walk for 42 days over dusty roads and rolling hills. Everywhere Zarafa went, she was a celebrity. By the time Zarafa reached Paris, it had been two years since she left Egypt.

There was once a wise king who was ready to stop being the king. So he ordered some workers to roll a large boulder onto the road that led through town. Then the king hid nearby and watched to see if anyone would move the huge rock from its place in the road. This person would become king.

The first man to pass by was the city’s wealthiest person. He bitterly complained that he was too rich to have a boulder in his way. As he walked around the boulder, he shouted, ―I must let the king know how angry I am!‖

Soon the town’s smartest person came to the boulder in the road. She complained loudly that the king should do a better job of keeping the roads clear. Then she, too, walked around the boulder.

Finally, a farmer came along, carrying a load of vegetables. As soon as he arrived at the boulder, he set down his vegetables and tried to move the rock. ―Other people might need to use this road,‖ the farmer said to himself. ―If I can move it, then I should do so.‖

After much hard work, the farmer finally succeeded in rolling the boulder off the road. He then noticed a hole where the boulder had been. Inside the hole was a box. The farmer opened the box to find the king’s crown and a note. The note read: ―For your hard work and for caring about others, you are now the king!‖

In the desert, there is very little water. The plants and animals that live in the desert have special features for living with little water. Plants like the cactus have short leaves. These leaves trap and store water. The cactus also has spines on its leaves. This is to keep animals from taking its water.

Animals that live in the desert are often nocturnal. This means they sleep during the day. They come out to eat at night when it is cool. Other animals, like the camel, are awake during the heat of the day. They have special eyelashes that keep the sand out of their eyes. They have nostrils that can close to keep the sand out of their noses. They can go for many days without drinking. Many animals that live in the desert can get all the water they need from the foods they eat.

This following text is for questions 39 to 41.

Receiving gifts is always very exciting. Personally, I am sure that a person does not remember all gifts he has received because it is impossible. However, I know that all people remember a few gifts that were special. Why people remember those special gifts?

First of all, I believe that people remember special gifts because they were from very close and dear people. It can be any form, i.e. musical instruments, books, mobile phone, motor bike, etc. For example, I remember my parents presented me a ring when I was sixteen years old. It was not an expensive ring but it

Page 10: MKKS SMA/MA KOTA SURAKARTA UJI COBA UJIAN NASIONAL · PDF fileMKKS SMA/MA KOTA SURAKARTA UJI COBA UJIAN NASIONAL ... 120 menit untuk mengerjakan ... diserahkan kepada pengawas ujian

MKKS SMA/MA Kota Surakarta 2016 10 BAHASA INGGRIS-Kode A

was very valuable for me and when I left my home and moved to another city I often looked at that ring and felt like my parents were somewhere near me. I felt their support and understanding. They want us to remember them and they want to make us happy.

Another reason why people remember special gifts because they were exactly what people wanted to have for a long time, but for some reasons, for example, they just could not afford those things, they did not buy them. So, when they receive those things as gifts it makes them very happy and they remember those moments for a long time. When I was a child my mother could not buy me a bicycle because we did not have enough money at that time. So, when my grandfather bought me my first bicycle it was the happiest moment in my life. Moreover, he personally taught me how to ride and I spent all my spare time after that event cycling.

To sum up, I think that people remember special gifts because they presented with love.

39. What is the text about? A . People remember special gifts. B . A person does not remember all gifts. C . Special gifts because they presented with love. D . Special gifts are from very close and dear people. E . Special gifts were exactly what people wanted to have.

40. Which words expressing the feeling does the writer have? A . Close and happy. D. Exciting and understanding. B . Supportive and valuable. E. Valuable and happy. C . Understanding and supportive.

41. What did the special gift the writer get from grandfather? A . Ring. D. Motor bike. B . Books E. Musical instruments. C . Bicycle.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has set a box office record with an estimated $57 million from Thursday night shows.

The Walt Disney Co.'s estimate on Friday easily surpassed the previous Thursday night record of $43.5 million by 2011's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2."

The movie's international rollout, which began Wednesday, has brought in a total of $72.7 million. That includes the biggest single day ever in the United Kingdom, where it made an estimated $14.4 million. The film cost about $200 million to make, according to industry estimates.

The early figures suggest "The Force Awakens" is on course to exceed the record domestic opening of "Jurassic World," which debuted with $208.8 million in June.

J.J. Abrams' seventh chapter in George Lucas's space saga arrived with the kind of hoopla and anticipation that few films have ever matched. Costumed, light-saber-wielding fans have lined up around blocks, from Jakarta to Paris, to be among the first to see "The Force Awakens" (and hopefully avoid any spoilers from its intensely guarded plot).

In North America, the film sold a record $100 million worth of presale tickets before Thursday previews began at approximately 7 p.m. EST. Playing in 4,134 theaters, "The Force Awakens" is the widest December release ever attempted.

3-D and Imax screenings are helping to propel the record gross. Disney said that 47 percent of the box office came from 3-D showings and $5.7 million from Imax screens.

A lot is riding on the film for Disney, which paid $4.06 billion for Lucas film in 2012. Sequels and spinoffs are already in development for years to come, not to mention an entire corner of Disneyland devoted to the franchise.

42. Which one is not true according to the text? A . The "The Force Awakens" movie cost about $200 million to make. B . Costumed, light-saber-wielding fans have lined up around blocks, from Jakarta to Paris. C . "The Force Awakens" movie is the widest December release ever attempted. D . Alexander the Great’s accomplishments are well-known. One of the greatest military leaders of all time, this Greek king of ancient Macedonia was undefeated in battle. Yet one part of his life remains a mystery— the cause of his death one month before his 33rd birthday.

Historians agree on a few facts about his death. On May 29, 323 BC, Alexander became ill after attending a banquet. He remained in bed with a high fever. By June 9, he was unable to move or speak, and could only acknowledge visitors by waving his hand. Two days later, he was dead.

Today, there are several theories about the cause of his death. Some experts believe he died of a disease. Malaria and typhoid fever were both common in the region at that time. Drinking alcohol, as he did at the banquet, might have increased the effects of the disease.

Other historians suspect that Alexander was murdered—poisoned by one of his many enemies. Critics of this theory point out that twelve days passed before Alexander died, and long-acting poisons were not common in ancient Macedonia. Supporters of the theory, however, respond by suggesting that Alexander might have been poisoned once on May 29 and then again before he died.

Recently, some historians have suggested another possibility. People who knew Alexander often described his unusual posture. He held his head high, looking upward and outward. This pose might have been the result of a spinal condition known as scoliosis. It’s possible that a related spinal infection was the cause of his inability to move and may have led to his death. For now, however, the questions surrounding Alexander’s death remain unanswered.
