He is a hugely experienced conductor for dance and ballet, and he is now a leading figure in commissioning music for dance in the UK. He has conducted as a guest with many of the world’s finest ballet companies. He has specialised in 20 th Century and contemporary work, and has a large repertoire that also includes the 19 th Century classics. He has probably conducted more performances of contemporary music for dance than any other conductor in the world today. For Rambert Dance Company, Paul conducts over 50 performances a year, every one including a newly commissioned piece of music. In 2009 Paul launched the Rambert Orchestra, and inaugurated the Rambert Music Fellowship, a scheme that has grown into a highly sought-after and respected residency for composers. The most recent commission, Gavin Higgins’ What Wild Ecstasy was broadcast on Radio 3, released by NMC records, and nominated for several composition prizes. In 2004 Paul won a Time Out award for outstanding contribution to dance, following the UK premiere of Steve Reich's Triple Quartet and a tour of Thomas Ades' Living Toys. Rambert Orchestra regularly receives critical acclaim in the national press, and highlights at Sadler’s Wells have included Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms with New London Chamber Choir, Julian Anderson’s The Comedy of Change, Mahler’s orchestration of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, the revival of Nijinsky’s ballet The afternoon of a faune. For Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light Paul conducted 16 different regional choirs in England and Scotland. When Rambert appeared at the Edinburgh International Festival, Paul conducted a triple bill of Mahler song cycles with Gerald Finley and Jane Irwin and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra,. After numerous spells with New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Paul’s CV includes some of the best work of many legendary choreographers including Balanchine, Robbins, Ashton, Nijinsky, Bruce and Kylian. He has worked with many of today’s choreographers including Helgi Tomasson, Peter Martins, Matthew Bourne, Mark Baldwin, Ashley Page, Christopher Hampson and Wayne MacGregor. Paul has also appeared in several European theatres, conducting full-length ballets with companies including English National Ballet, Scottish Ballet, New Adventures, Royal Swedish Ballet, and Introdans in Holland. Away from the dance world, Paul has conducted in every major concert hall and opera house in London, and worked with the BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, English Sinfonia and Northern Chamber Orchestra, and also given concerts in Slovenia, Romania, Germany, Holland, Denmark and the USA. He has also worked in collaboration with Britten Sinfonia and Efterklang in live performances of the Parades album in Leeds and at the Barbican. Other theatre credits include Edward Scissorhands for Matthew Bourne at Sadler's Wells and on tour, Wind in the Willows for William Tuckett at the Royal Opera House Linbury Theatre, the world premiere of Stephen McNeff's opera Clockwork, and well- reviewed classical opera for Bampton Classical Opera and at the Buxton Festival. He has also assisted at Glyndebourne (Peter Grimes) and English National Opera (The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, Elegy for Young Lovers and Caligula). As Principal Conductor of Cambridge New Music Players in the 1990's, Paul gave many world premieres and broadcasts, and in all his work he continues to champion new pieces by a broad range of composers. In July 2011 he was appointed Conductor of the Ernest Reed Symphony Orchestra and he also regularly conducts Corinthian Chamber Orchestra in concerts in London. He is an advocate of engaging with audiences young and old, and can regularly be seen talking (and writing) about music and dance for Rambert.
