THEME OF THE MONTH Soccer and Track
Last school year, 3rd level was all asphalt, and the only game students could play was basketball or climb on the domed jungle gym. Today there is a soccer field, a racetrack, and basketball courts. A newly-‐built ramp provides easy access to this level. Every day 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade student can play soccer. You can also see many people on the track every day. Early morning arrivals also get to exercise on the new track. The 3rd level is a great improvement to our school.
INFORMATION OF THE MONTH Clean Up Your School
You should not litter at our school because we want to keep our school clean. You can get a white slip for littering. Some people clean after others, but you should clean after yourself. Our custodians are nice enough that they clean the lunch tables. Mrs. Duncan’s class sometimes works together to do trash pick-‐up. Let’s be good citizens and for once give them a break and clean up after ourselves.
FRIENDSHIP OF THE MONTH Amanda & Kristen
Amanda Bystrom is in Mrs. Choi’s 4th grade class, and Kristen Marshal is in Mrs. LaCom’s 4th grade class. Amanda and Kristen have been friends for 1 year! They met in 3rd grade in Miss Duncan’s class. They play together at recess and lunch; their favorite game is Pacman. They also like the game tag.
PERSON OF THE MONTH
Angela Karapetyan
Angela is in Mr. Hewitt’s 5th grade class. She participates in after school programs such as Drill Team and Suessical Master Class. Sometimes Angela walks to school. Her favorite color is gold and blue. Her best friends are Emma (in Ms. Cannon’s 5th grade class) and Ruth (in Ms. Hewitt’s 5th grade class). Angela’s favorite food is pizza, and her favorite dessert is Nutella. She loves gymnastics. She’s been a student at Keppel since Kindergarten and next year she is going to Toll.
EVENT OF THE MONTH Father-‐Son Dinner
We’re sure all the boys had fun at the Father-‐Son Cowboy Hoedown on November 14. Besides the food and desserts, Keppel dads and boy students played lots of carnival games like ring toss. There were cowboy games too, like a mechanical bull that you could ride and rope spinning. At the end, everyone went home with a goody bag and smiles!
TEACHER OF THE MONTH Mrs. Winder
Mrs. Winder is a 3rd grade teacher who has been teaching for 10 years. She decided to become a teacher because she wanted to inspire children. Some of her favorite things are: the color green, Mexican food, photographing, and helping her daughter with homework. She likes going on vacations to Hawaii.
ANIMAL OF THE MONTH Bats
By Atom Shahoian Bats are amazing animals. People might say bats are bloodsucking monsters but they are amazing and fascinating animals. There is only one type of bat that sucks blood and it is the vampire bat but it usually sucks from goats and cows. There are 1200 different species of bat! One of my favorites is the brown bat. When people look at bats they might say bats have wings but they don’t, they have fingers with skin that stretch between them. Most bats are insectivores some of them eat fruit and like I said before there is only one bat that sucks blood, the vampire bat. The next time you see a bat don’t get scared be happy that you got to see it!
FACTS OF THE MONTH Planets in Space
By Anahit Sinanyan
We have 8 planets in our solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Pluto is now classified as a dwarf planet. The planets orbit around the sun. The sun is a big star full of different gasses. You can see the sun during the day but, at night, you see only the moon. Do you know why? The moon actually reflects sunlight; what we think of as moonshine is actually sunshine reflected by the moon. The sun doesn’t shine bright in the sky at night because the earth rotates on its axis every 24 hours (1 day); as it rotates, you see sunlight in the day time and darkness at night. Each planet has its own moon and some planets even have more than one moon. Some planets, like Saturn and Jupiter, also have rings. People have only been able to travel in space for a short period of time. Astronauts go to space, but more often NASA sends rovers, which are small high-‐tech machines which can collect and take picture of space.
