Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Japan (MHIJ) was well represented at the 27th Japan International Machine Tool Fair (JIMTOF 2014) at the Toyko International Exhibition Center. From October 30th, through November 4th, 2014 a large contingent of MHIJ staff was on hand to present and detail a number of displays outlining our corporate capabilities. The highlight of Mitsubishi’s booth was the new “Mitsubishi Super Skiving System,” (see elsewhere in this newsletter) and drew significant crowds at published presentation times. The JIMTOF show encompasses 11 different halls in one complex featuring machine tools, metalworking equipment, cutting tools, metrology & testing equipment all the way through to machine tool accessories. There were even special exhibits on the art of World-class Japanese “kisage,” (scraping) along with a multitude of free workshops throughout the show put on by exhibitors. There was over 45,000 m² (485,000 Ft²) of exhibit space and over 135,000 visitors over the 6 days of the show – more than 10,000 of which were listed as foreign visitors. Machine tool builders stretching their products to encompass more machining functions is a trend we’ve seen emphasized in the United States - and builders exhibiting at JIMTOF were no exception. As mill-turn machines are relatively commonplace now, there were a number of machine tool builders with a variety of machines combining Skiving capability with traditional turning or milling. Due to outstanding marketing and a show layout that was easily navigable, these companies were not hard to find. The unique theme to the JIMTOF show is the attention paid to customized fliers that exhibitors’ present at the show: they are maps to the exhibitor’s booth, outlining what is going to be presented and what items are there – and in many cases, what time the presentation was going to occur. Along with detailed graphics laying out the booth, an attendee with one of these fliers in hand can easily explain to his or her peers back home what they had seen during their time spent in the booth. There was definitely an emphasis by exhibitors to show their latest offerings and highlighting those items very clearly. There is no question that this is the most important machine tool show in the Far East. As many of the world’s best machine tool builders are based in Japan and the JIMTOF show is THE place to be (and easy to navigate in any language) this is one manufacturing technology show that should not be missed. NEW TECHNOLOGY

Christmas Greeting FROM BRENDA’S DESK One of the best parts of welcoming a new year is reflecting on the many blessings experienced throughout the year gone by.

Our relationship with our Mitsubishi customers is one thing we are truly grateful for and we thank you for the opportunity to serve you in 2014. It has truly been our pleasure helping you reach your production goals. We look forward to contributing to your success in 2015 as well!

In addition to another successful year of business growth, the staff at the Machine Tool Division of Mitsubishi in Wixom has been blessed with growing families as well. Engineer Nao Otsuki along with his wife Chisato welcomed a baby girl, May, into their family in September of this year. Just last month Service Technician Kaji Kajihara and his wife Mika were blessed with a baby boy, Rey. Our Maxine Cox proudly welcomed her first great grandchild, Noah, in October.

Also in October, service technician Alex Schinke married his bride Kelly. Last February Sales Manager Jeff Fadler became engaged to his fiancé Melissa.

Vice President of Service, Neil Sawyer, gained two son-in-laws as both of his twin daughters married this year. I joyfully gained a son-in-law as well; at 6’8” he almost counts as two!

As the years roll by I realize more and more that it is not what we have, but who we have to share our lives with that counts. I wish for you a lovely holiday season full of joy and treasured moments with those that mean the most to you.

Merry Christmas! Brenda

Precision Cutting of Internal Gears at Low CostACHIEVEMENTS DERIVE FROM NEWLY DEVELOPED PROPRIETARY BARREL-SHAPED, MULTIPLE-CUTTING-EDGE TOOLMitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has completed development of the “Mitsubishi Super Skiving System” for machining internal gears with high speed and outstanding precision. The new system has overcome technical issues characteristic of conventional skiving by use of an MHI developed, innovative barrel-shaped multiple-cutting-edge rotary tool (patent pending), enabling mass production of difficult-to-machine internal gears. In addition, longer tool life, combined with shorter machining times, enables significant reductions in production costs. MHI is aiming to commence marketing of the new tool and dedicated skiving machine in April, 2015.

The main breakthrough achievement for the Mitsubishi Super Skiving System was the development of the “Super Skiving Cutter,” a world’s first for a tool of its kind. It was designed in-house by applying skiving technology to MHI’s barrel shaped grinding wheel, also a world first, developed for MHI’s ZI20A gear grinding machine. A machine designed for mass-production applications in 2009.

MHI has also developed new cutting simulation software specifically for skiving’s needs. Through precise simulation of cutting forces applied to the tool’s cutting blades, long tool life is realized in combination with maximum process cutting speed matching that of the skiving machines capabilities. By offering

an integrated package consisting of Mitsubishi’s newly developed tool, simulation technology, skiving machine and

machining software, users can realize optimal capabilities for the machining of internal gears.

Skiving is a cutting technology whereby a pinion type cutter or other rotary tool is engaged with

a workpiece at a crossed-axes angle, and synchronously rotated together. At the

points where the two contact, the effect of the crossed-axes angle generates

a sliding velocity of the tool in the axial direction, resulting

SERVICE TIPS

Year End Tune-up: Change Your OilThe least costly and highest return on investment for any machine tool maintenance is to change the oil and filter regularly.

Over time, oil viscosity breaks down and wear particles collect in the bottom of the hydraulic reservoir. This is true of lubrication systems as well. This is the life blood of the machine and your investment. The hydraulic system suppliers Mitsubishi has chosen are of the highest quality and reliability. Not going too far out on a limb, we would say if you follow our recommendations to change filters twice per year and complete tank cleaning and oil exchange once per year, the hydraulic pump and valves will never need replacement.

This oil change is extremely critical to our customers that own our CNC shaping machines. This is both for standard shapers and our ST Series of programmable lead guide machines. Since shapers are on a hydrostatic system, cleanliness of your hydraulic system is of the utmost importance. The simple task of changing filters, exchanging hydraulic oil and cleaning your tank, in combination with monitoring guide pressures, will virtually eliminate any need to replace a very costly upper guide system. Our prices for filters are more than competitive with most US suppliers.

in high-speed machining. Use of a pinion cutter type tool, however, typically makes the cutting (skiving) angle obtuse – a drawback that impedes improvements in cutting precision and also causes significant tool wear.

With MHI’s newly developed tool, the adoption of a barrel shape averts interference with the workpiece and prevents the cutting angle from becoming obtuse. As a result, a large crossed-axes angle can be achieved enabling the realization of cutting speeds and precision levels surpassing those of pinion-cutter type skiving. It is said to even exceed the corresponding levels achievable with a gear shaper. Furthermore, the adoption of multiple cutter blades more than triples the standard tool life.

The new MHI Super Skiving System was exhibited at the 27th Japan International Machine Tool Fair (JIMTOF), where visitors were given full demonstrations of the new system’s cutting capabilities.

Going forward, MHI will continue to leverage its dual strengths in diverse gear cutting machines and cutting tools and apply them to the development and provision of state-of-the-art gear cutting systems and technologies.

Our most frequent call after any extended holiday break is for dead batteries! To retain back up you will need to replace the D-cell batteries located in the door of the machine. For Fanuc 16/18M Control series there are 6 volt twin or triple battery sets located on the CNC Servo Amplifiers. You can obtain the batteries from Fanuc directly. For D-Cell battery backup it’s a good idea to clean the contacts and check for any previous battery corrosion. REMEMBER – Change the batteries with the POWER ON. If you have the power off you will lose your machine zero positions.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from All in the Mitsubishi Service Department!
