HUNTER VALLEY AUSTRALIA

Christmas Newsletter 2019SEASONS GREETINGS! from MISTLETOE WINES in the Hunter Valley.Well, another year nearly has just about gone and what have we achieved?

It has been an extremely busy year at Mistletoe which kicked off with a very hot and dry period leading into Vintage 2019.

Because of our export sales to China we had one of the largest vintages ever.

The Hunter fruit was excellent overall with the whites and rosés being the standouts. The Hunter reds are very good but not good enough to produce a Reserve or Grand Reserve wine. Some great red material from Young (Hilltops) rounded out the vintage by mid-March.

Gwen and I then travelled to China for a series of wine presentations with our importers. An absolutely amazing trip travelling to Beijing, Dandong and Chengdu.

On our return, we started work on numerous bottlings and export orders which carried us through to the end of June when we left for Italy just after stocktake.

We had our Chinese importers travelling with us in Italy as we assisted them in sourcing Italian wine for shipment back to China.

It was very cold dry Winter at Mistletoe with a large number of frosts compared to earlier years. The substantial rain we received in late March tided us over into Spring. We have really only had one significant fall of rain this Spring when we got over 100mm in late September. This was enough to get everything going and the Valley looks stunning at the moment. It has remained cool right through to the last week of October and I reckon growth-wise we are about 2 weeks behind recent years.

We are now completing our bottlings for 2019 and getting ready for the Christmas Season. Only 6-7 more weeks to 2020 and it all starts again.

Warm regards, Ken

2017WILD SEMILLONMistletoe’s 2nd Wild Semillon. The use

of an indigenous (Wild) yeast from the vineyard for fermentation, combined with malolactic fermentation, and some time in older French oak barrels have yielded a left of field Hunter Semillon. Why buy Mistletoe Wines?

In the current economic environment we should all be endeavouring to buy “Australian Made” whenever we can.

When you purchase wine from Mistletoe you are supporting a 100% Australian family owned business that is located in a rural community.

A large amount of romance and mystique surrounds the production of wine but at the end of the day our industry is agricultural based. We are basically grape farmers.

No crop, no wine, simple as that.

As such we are also adversely affected by droughts such as the one we are currently experiencing. Reduced rainfall means lower crop levels and less production. With the current economic climate we are not able to pass on virtually any cost increases at all, we just have to absorb them.

Buying wine direct from winemaker and grape-growers such as Mistletoe makes a huge difference to rural communities.

The dollars you spend with us go to our employees and contractors and our loyal grape-growers and then flow into our regional economy through the likes of vineyard workers, grape-pickers, agricultural suppliers, truck-drivers, and the people who work on the bottling lines and in packaging, agricultural supplies etc.

These people in turn shop locally and support other local businesses and this assists in bonding, and binding, our rural community as well as slowing the workforce drift to the larger cities.

We particularly take great pride in the fact that we pay our grape-growers, unlike many large wine companies, prices that enable them to survive.

This may mean that our wine costs a little more but we are comfortable with the knowledge that our growers will prosper and assist us to continue producing great wine in the years ahead.

Australian wine is one of very few commodities that is produced 100% in Australia.

The dollars you spend on Australian (Mistletoe) wine stay in Australia helping to secure the futures of many, including your /our children and grandchildren!

Please remember, when you buy wine from Mistletoe you are buying high quality, hand-crafted, award winning wines, direct from one of Australia’s leading small wineries, and at fantastic prices!

“Direct from the Producer” - no middleman involved - no profits going to overseas wine companies or international investment shareholders.

Your purchases help to support, and maintain, regional Australian communities.

ANOTHER REASON TO BUY FROM MISTLETOE.

Mistletoe Winery has been a long-term supporter of the Cedar Creek Wombat Rescue Inc. and Hospital which is a not-for-profit organisation that is recognised as a charity by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. It operates solely on donations, and contributions from its founders, Roz and Kev Holme.

Mistletoe has collected donations in excess of $5000 on behalf of Cedar Creek thanks to the generosity of our supporters.

With the drought biting here in the Hunter Cedar Creek has been inundated with more distressed wildlife than usual and has been hit with increases in the cost of the feed and water that they provide for the animals they nurture back to health. As well as wombats they care for orphaned wallabies, kangaroos and all species of birdlife. They do an absolutely amazing job at major personal cost.

To learn more about Cedar Creek visit their website at https://www.cedarcreekwombatrescue.com/To further assist Cedar Creek Mistletoe extends the following offer to our members.

For every case of wine purchased from Mistletoe Christmas Newsletter, up until January 17th 2020, we shall donate $10 to Cedar Creek.

These people do an amazing job without any government assistance and we support them as we know the money donated goes directly to the provider without any costs being absorbed by wages, overheads, commissions etc. as so often is the case with many charities.

In other words you can rest assured that 100% of the money donated goes directly to assisting injured wildlife.

If you wish to add to the Mistletoe donation you may do so when placing your orders either by phone, email or online.
