###

All of us make and face errors daily. Be it letters, face

conversations or social media, errors disturb our

communication.

###

Errors may occur due to typing wrong, or due to confusion in

constructs of the English language.

ERROR ERRORS EVERYWHERE

BEFORE WE BEGIN…

LET'S KNOW HOW TO FRAME A SIMPLE SENTENCE

A sentence contains a subject and predicate associated with a verb and modifiers.

E.g:

The brown dog with the red collar always barks loudly.

Most common errors are:

###Spelling Errors###Confusion among homophones

These errors can be solved through practise…err…practice

Usually occurs because subject and verb are divided by prepositions or other phrases or clauses.

What to do?

Locate the subject of the sentence

If the subject is singular, choose a singular verb

If the subject is plural, choose a plural verb

The athlete runs around the track.

The athlete runs around the track.

singular subject, singular verb

The athletes run around the track.

plural subject, plural verb

FAULTY SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT

The man that lives over the hill scare us every time we walk by his house.

The man that lives over the hill scare us every time we walk by his house.

The man that lives over the hill scare us every time we walk by his house.

Notice “that lives” is a dependent phrase

“over the hill” is a prepositional phrase

We are left with a singular subject, so it

requires a singular verb

The man that lives over the hill scares us every time we walk by his house.

CORRECT!

The noun or pronoun that another pronoun refers to is called the antecedent.

E.g:- Everyone in the class should know their lines by Monday.

Everyone in the play should know their lines by Monday.

We have to remember that “everyone” is treated as singular.

“everyone” requires singular “his/her” for pronoun agreement

The class clapped their hands as the student ended his presentation.

The class clapped its hands as the student ended his presentation.

“audience” requires “its” for pronoun agreement

Shifting tense of the verb is a common writing problem

We must remain consistent with uses of verb tense

The township bought a powerful new lawn mower which breaks down after two weeks

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

The township bought a powerful new lawn mower which breaks down after two weeks.

Since we began in the past tense with “bought” it is not correct to change to present tense with “breaks”

The township bought a powerful new lawn mower which broke down after two weeks.

The restaurant’s homemade bread is thick and crunchy. It was a meal within itself.

The restaurant’s homemade bread was thick and crunchy. It was a meal within itself.

Or

The restaurant’s homemade bread is thick and crunchy. It is a meal within itself.
