Presbyterians in the News
Over the next few weeks, when you open the paper or check the headlines online, you may see an article or articles about Presbyterians in the news. This is because our denomination is holding a national gathering, called the General Assembly. The General Assembly is the highest governing body in the PC(USA). The General Assembly (GA) meets every other year in a city within the country. I want to take some time to explain what will be going on during this meeting.
The General Assembly will convene from June 14-21 this year in Detroit, Michigan. The 500+ commissioners (delegates) are pastors (or Teaching Elders, TE) and elders (or Ruling Elders, RE) who come from Presbyterian Churches around the country. Each Presbytery chooses their own commissioners. Our Presbytery is represented by TE Jackie Hannan, Atascocita; TE Sam Jun, Pines, Houston; RE Jody Harrington, Memorial Drive, Houston; RE Nancy Penney, First, Conroe; RE Ann Hardy, St. John’s, Houston; RE John Hathaway, Woodlands Community; TE Steve Oglesbee, Clear Lake, Houston; RE Forbes Baker, Westminster, Houston; RE Dan Alexander, Waverly and Trinity; TE Helen DeLeon, Webster and Youth Advisory Delegate Clay Shupak, First, Lufkin.
The GA will discuss lots of topics and take votes on proposed amendments to our constitution (divided into two parts: the Book of Order and the Book of Confessions). Almost all of these votes will be carried out and national media will pay little attention. There are going to be a lot of topics that are worth talking about, including an entire series of issues on Israel that I am following closely. But there is probably only one subject matter which the GA will discuss and vote on which will show up in the newspaper and on the internet. That topic will be the definition of marriage and whether Presbyterian pastors can officiate at marriages of same gender couples.
One can never fully predict how a General Assembly will vote but there are several overtures originating from local churches to amend our constitution concerning marriage and marriage ceremonies. The GA will probably pass some sort of amendment in this area which will then be sent to the Presbyteries. If GA passes an amendment, this amendment is then sent to the Presbyteries for their votes. If a majority of the 173 Presbyteries vote in favor of the proposed amendment, then it is added to the constitution. Stay tuned, because some of you will have the opportunity to vote on these issues at a Presbytery meeting in the future.
After all the dust has settled, I will try to update ya’ll on what happened and how it may affect us here at Southminster. Have a wonderful Summer!
In Christ,

The Visioning Process Change or Cheeseburgers?
As part of our ongoing Visioning Process, I’ve had the opportunity to do a lot of reading
and studying on churches and organizations in times of change. One of the pastors that
writes on this subject is Carey Nieuwhof, the lead pastor of Connexus Community Church.
He helps churches and organizations that are going through challenging times. It seems
that most of us recognize that we’ll have to make some changes at SPC, but we’re not
happy about it or we disagree about what we should do. Carey writes this blog note to
organizations that are in the position we’re in at this time. It certainly puts it in
perspective.
Here, Eat This Bacon Cheeseburger
The problem you and your organization are facing is a challenge a lot of us
experience in life.
Isn’t wanting to grow but not really change actually like saying “I want to lose
weight, but I really want a bacon cheeseburger”? Well, yes, it’s exactly like that.
People hire personal trainers all the time to help them lose weight.
A trainer’s message is not revolutionary.
It is almost never “just take this diet pill and you will magically lose 50 pounds
while eating cupcakes.” Yet most of us want to believe that we can take a pill and
eat cheeseburgers and cupcakes and lose weight. At least I do.
A good personal trainer’s advice is always some variation of “eat smaller portions,
eat healthy foods, exercise and make sure your calorie input is less than your
calorie output”.
And people pay them money—lots of money—to tell them what they already
know to be true.
You’re not that different as an organizational leader. Really.

J.O. Dravis - My two grandfathers were John Jenkins and Otto Dravis. My parents felt that if
they named me after one or the other, someone would get their feelings hurt, so they took the J
from John and the O from Otto and left it at that. J.O. really is my name. I guess a little known
fact about me is that I spent several years as an Emergency Medical Technician. I've delivered
babies, performed CPR, cared for auto accident and violent assault victims and met my wife in
the ICU.
Clif Peabody - I met my wife over 59 years ago because I was dating her apartment mate in Dayton, Ohio. My date and I arrived back at her apartment not early one night and she wanted to introduce me to her new apartment mate. Nothing would do but to awaken her for the introduction. That is how I met Jeanne and all these years I have enjoyed telling friends that I met my wife in bed. After the Air Force I retired from 35 years with Mobil Oil Corp. I've been retired 23 years. A proud time in my life was the over 3 decades I worked on various Presbytery committees. The proudest was for years being on the New Church Development Committee. In the late 1970's an individual was sent by Presbytery charged with putting a committee together to start a church in the fast-growing Missouri City, Texas area. That individual was me. I was moderator of that committee until 1985 when Southminster was chartered. My next assignment had me in College Station to start a church that merged with the old A&M church to form the current Covenant PC. From there, the same assignment for the Grand Lakes PC in Katy. Somewhere in there the Thien An (Grace) Vietnamese church was begun - and they have now started another Vietnamese church in addition to theirs. We brought a minister directly from the Phillipines to be the organizing pastor of the Biyaya (Grace) Philipino Church which worshiped in the Fellowship Hall here at Southminster for years , until just recently they moved.
Don & Dorothy Watts – Grew up in San Antonio and met at San Antonio Junior College early in the fall semester of 1957. We had a class together and in October, Don asked me for a date on New Year’s Eve. What a shock! From that evening on, we have enjoyed our lives together. After graduating from SAJC, we enrolled at UT Austin as juniors. Don enrolled in engineering, while Dorothy was pursuing her elementary education degree. After we married on June 25, 1960, Dorothy accepted a first grade teaching position in Manor, outside of Austin, while Don played golf and completed his Civil Engineering degree. After he graduated, we
moved to Amarillo and Don started a 38 year career with Texaco. We had assignments in several locations, including Illinois, California, Florida and Texas. While living in California, we attended the same church that Roy Rogers and Dale Evans did! We have enjoyed numerous trips to other countries, for business and pleasure. We moved to Sugar Land in 1993 and joined SPC in 1994. After retiring in 1998, we have remained active in church and social activities, and in 2009, Dorothy initiated the Date Night program at SPC. Don still enjoys making sawdust in his wood shop. We celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2010 with friends and family. As most of you know, we bleed “orange” and attend all the UT home games! We are blessed to have two wonderful daughters, two sons-in-law and four grandchildren who live in Coppell, TX.

The Best Little Theater in Town By Rachel Hauschel
Sunday, June 15th, the Southminster Youth Choir
hosted its 14th annual dinner theatre. The evening
consisted not only of a delicious meal, but was full of
entertainment by our own youth. The show began with
the youth chime ensemble performing the Disney
classic “Colors of the Wind.” Afterwards, seniors Emily
Wood and Marisa Harkins sang their final duet
together after years of participating in choir at
Southminster. Finally, the cast performed a dramatic
rendition of “The Best Little Theater in Town.” It was a
fantastic experience for both the actors and the
audience. The cast would like to recognize Gabriele
Hodges and all of the hard work she has put into each
dinner theatre these past 14 years. Thank you!

Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy 11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one re-turned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”Luke 17: 11 - 19 So here are some questions we all may want to ask ourselves:
“Am I like the one who returned and gave thanks for God’s gifts, or am I like the other nine who accepted Jesus’ blessing and never stopped to say thank you?”
“In what ways can I give back to others a portion of what God has blessed me with?”
If you haven’t found a place to share your time and talents now is the time. Just ask and I’m sure Southminster Presbyterian Church can use your help in one of the many ministries the church supports.
