On the Sunday before Easter many churches hold special Palm Sunday services. Congregations might observe palm branches in the worship area, participants distributing palm branches, a procession of palms, or all three. On this day Christians observe Jesus’ arrival into Jerusalem. It is the start of Holy Week, the days leading up to Easter, that commemorates the last days of Jesus’ life on earth.

Prior to Jesus’ arrival in the city of Jerusalem, He had not proclaimed His kingship publicly. But now the time was right for Jesus to make His grand entry. At first glance the event might be more accurately described as a royal entry rather than a triumphal entry. In order to fulfill Isaiah’s prophecy Jesus entered Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. In ancient times leaders rode horses to war, but they rode donkeys if they were coming in peace. The following Scriptures record accounts of other leaders who did the same: 1 Kings 1:33; Judges 12:14; and 2 Samuel 16:2.

Riding into town on a donkey, Jesus presented Himself as King—the King of peace. The long-ago promise to the Daughter of Zion, Jerusalem, became a reality before the large crowd. Jesus, the King, had arrived! All of Jerusalem was in an uproar! Everyone wanted to know who was causing such a stir. The Jews expected a prophet, probably like Moses, so they answered that Jesus was the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.

But Jesus was more than a prophet. He is God’s Son! He is the Savior of the world! Jesus was not waging war against a nation or conspiring to overthrow the government. He came to bring the people freedom, but He was not what the people envisioned.

Unlike those who heard about Jesus’ miracles and viewed Him as a leader who would deliver them from Roman domination, you know the truth of salvation—the only way to a right relationship with God through His Son, Jesus. How can you tell people that Jesus is the Messiah?

How can you help the kids in your group understand that Jesus came as a very different king than the types portrayed in stories and movies? What words can you use to help them understand that King Jesus came as the Messiah to save them from their sin?

TAKE THE STEPS TO FOLLOW JESUS ʹ Lead each child to open a Bible. Assist as needed to help kids find the Table of Contents. Remind the kids that the Bible is divided into the Old and New Testaments. Each testament contains smaller parts called books. ʹ Give each child a game piece to place at the start space on the gameboard. Choose a volunteer to go first. ʹ Each player will roll the numbered cube and move the number of footprint spaces indicated. If the player lands on a “Draw a Card” space, the player draws a card and completes the task listed on the card. If a player is struggling with an answer, he may receive help from a friend. ʹ Play as time allows.

HOSANNA IN A CIRCLE ʹ Welcome boys and girls to the group. Tell the kids how happy you are to see them. Direct the kids to sit in a circle on the floor. ʹ Choose a child to go first. Starting with the number one, each child will count aloud in order one time around the circle. Choose a number (smaller than the number of children). Begin counting again with a different child. When the circle reaches the designated number, the child will clap instead of saying the number. The children following the chosen number should continue counting to complete the round. Choose another number and play again. ʹ Start the game again. This time instead of clapping, when the circle reaches the chosen number, lead the child to shout hosanna. Play several rounds, allowing different children the opportunity to say hosanna. ʹ Ask the children if they know what the word hosanna means. Explain that they will learn more about the word in today’s Bible story.

ʹ Show the “Cattle Call” video or read the missions story. ʹ Show the “Madagascar Map” and mention that Grant and Jodie Waller are missionaries in Madagascar. They live there with their children. ʹ Explain: “It is so important for missionaries to tell people God’s love and about Jesus.” ʹ Pray that the Mahafaly people will learn that God loves them so much that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to be their Savior.

    › Pack Items: 12: “Unit 2 Banner” 13: “John 14:6” 14: “Unit 2 Questions”

› Teaching Picture 6 › Music, Videos, small ball › Place the “Unit 2 Banner” and the “John 14:6” poster on the focal wall. Display the posters throughout Unit 2.

Option: Print the “Life Point Posters” for Unit 2 (Printables) to display throughout the unit.

    1. EXPLORE THE LIFE POINT ʹ Read aloud the “Unit 2 Banner” and point out that Jesus is the Savior! God sent His only Son, Jesus, to be the only Savior of the world. Explain that they will be learning more about Jesus throughout this unit. ʹ Remind the kids that today is Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday was the beginning of Jesus’ last week on earth before His crucifixion. ʹ Ask kids if they remember the special word they used during the circle game. Tell them that the word hosanna means “save now.” Jesus is the Messiah (“anointed one” or Christ); He is our Savior!

    2. TELL THE BIBLE STORYSHOW THE TEACHING PICTURE. ʹ Show the Teaching Picture. Ask the kids how they traveled to church today. See if they know how people would travel from place to place in Bible times. Ask if they see a form of transportation in the picture.

    3. LISTEN FOR HOSANNA ʹ Encourage kids to listen for the word hosanna in the story. When they hear you say the word, they should shout the word. (During the Bible story, pause after you say hosanna giving them time to respond.) ʹ Open your Bible to Matthew 21 and tell the Bible story in your own words. Option: Show “The Notebook Bible Story” video.

TELL THE BIBLE STORY: THE CROWD WELCOMED JESUSJesus and the disciples were traveling to Jerusalem. They came to the city of Bethphage at the Mount of Olives.

Jesus sent two of the disciples into the village. He told the disciples they would see a donkey tied up with her colt. Jesus told them to untie the donkey and colt and bring them to Him. Jesus explained if anyone asked why they were taking the donkey and colt, the disciples were to tell them the Lord needs them.

Zechariah the prophet had written this would happen. He said, “See, your King is coming to you, gentle, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt.”

The disciples did just as Jesus had instructed. The disciples laid their clothes on the donkey and colt, and Jesus sat on them.

A very large crowd of people spread their clothes on the road. Other people cut branches from trees to spread on the road. The crowds went ahead of Jesus and some followed Him. The people cried out: “Hosanna (pause) to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna (pause) in the highest heaven!”

  • LIFE POINT Jesus is the Messiah.

REVIEW QUESTIONS › What city was Jesus and the disciples traveling to that day? (Jerusalem)

› What did Jesus send the disciples to get from the village? (a donkey and a colt)

› True or False: If anyone asked what the disciples were doing, they were to pay for the donkey. (false)

› Name the Old Testament prophet who said that the King would be riding on a donkey. (Zechariah)

› What items did the crowd spread on the road in front of Jesus? (their clothes and tree branches)

› What did the crowds cry out as Jesus rode by them on the road? (hosanna)

› Who did the crowd say was riding on the donkey? (Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee)

As Jesus came into Jerusalem, the whole city was excited. People were asking who that was riding into the city. The crowds answered, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”

    — B A S E D O N M A T T H E W 2 1 : 1 - 1 1

    4. SING AND PRAY ʹ Lead the group to sing “The Savior King.” ʹ Explain that the way Jesus entered Jerusalem fulfilled the prophecy from Zechariah. Jesus did not enter on a horse, like a king. He came into the city in a very humble way. Jesus is the Messiah promised by God. Jesus came to save the people from their sins. ʹ Ask: “Why do you think the crowd shouted the word hosanna as Jesus entered the city?” Remind the kids, hosanna means “save now.” Jesus is our Savior. ʹ Encourage the kids to take a moment to think about how Jesus was willing to be our Savior. After a pause, pray, thanking God for sending Jesus to be the one and only Savior of the world.

SHOW THE “MOOSEBERRY LIFE ACTION” VIDEO.

    5. BEGIN LEARNING JOHN 14:6 ʹ Point to the “John 14:6” poster. ʹ Help the children find the verse in their Bibles. ʹ Review the verse. Define the words way, truth, and life. Explain that Jesus is the Messiah sent by God. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can spend eternity with God in heaven. ʹ Create teams of two to three children. Ask each team to come up with hand motions for the words way, truth, and life. After a few minutes, call each team, one at a time, to come forward and read the verse together, showing the group the hand motions they created.

    6. REVIEW ʹ Show the Teaching Picture. ʹ Review the story, asking the kids to help you with key words. ʹ Instruct the kids to stand in a circle. Tell the kids to toss the ball to one another. Encourage them to continue tossing the ball until you shout hosanna. Ask the child with the ball a Session 1 review question. If the player holding the ball does not know the answer, ask her to toss it to another player who volunteers to answer the question. ʹ Continue as time allows.

    STUDY THE BIBLE

CHOICE 1PAINTING HOSANNA ʹ Complete the Kids Activity Page. ʹ Review the Bible story. Ask the children why the crowd shouted hosanna as Jesus came into the city. Remind them that Jesus is the Messiah, the one God sent to take the punishment for people’s sins. ʹ Explain to the kids that they will be making a poster to take home so they will remember that Jesus is the Savior. Demonstrate how each child will use a pencil to write the word hosanna very lightly in large capital letters across the paper, giving extra space between each letter. ʹ After the kids have written the word, lead them to use the lines of each letter as a guide to trace around each letter. This will create a block letter. Once they have completed the block letters, they will erase the original center lines for each letter. ʹ Provide painting smocks. Using the paintbrushes, guide kids to lightly fill in the letters with paint. ʹ While the children are painting, remind them what the word hosanna means. Review that God sent His only Son, Jesus, to be the only Savior of the world. Point out the “Unit 2 Banner.” Say together “Jesus is the Savior!” ʹ Take a moment to pray, thanking God for sending Jesus to be the Messiah. Encourage kids to show their families their paintings as they tell them the story of how the crowd welcomed Jesus.

CHOICE 2SENDING FOR SOME HELP ʹ Complete the Kids Activity Page. ʹ Review the Bible story. Encourage the kids to help you review what happened in the story. ʹ Choose a volunteer. Tell him you need an item that is in the room. Ask the volunteer to find the item and bring it to you, but do not tell the name of the item. Give the child a hint of what it is by telling him what the item can do. (Example: something that can help me clean up a spill on the floor—broom.) Continue, giving every child an opportunity to find an item for you. ʹ Ask the following questions: “Who in the Bible story sent for something? Who did He send to get the item? What were they going in the village to get? What did Jesus tell them to say if anyone asked why they were taking it?” ʹ Help the kids open their Bibles to Zechariah 9:9. Read the verse together. Remind the kids that Jesus coming into Jerusalem on a donkey was a fulfillment of prophecy. It was another way for Jesus to show that He is the Messiah (“anointed one”) promised by God.

CHOICE 1 › Kids Activity Pages › Pack Item: 12: “Unit 2 Banner”

› Large paper (one per child), pencils, erasers, watercolor paint, paintbrushes, painting smocks, small paper cups, water, paper to cover the table

› Cover the work area with paper and prepare small cups of water. Write the word hosanna on the board or a piece of paper.

› Option: Children could use stencils to create the block letters.

CHOICE 2 › Kids Activity Pages › Bibles, several useful items (such as: broom, box of crayons, chair, and so forth; at least one item per child)

  • ʹ Allow the boys and girls to take turns giving clues for a friend to find an item in the room. ʹ Pray, thanking God for having a plan to send Jesus to be the only Savior of the world.

CHOICE 3SEARCH FOR THE STORY ʹ Complete the Kids Activity Page. ʹ Review the Bible story. Encourage the kids to listen for key words they hear in the story. ʹ Ask the kids to help you make a list of words they heard in the story. Give hints to help them remember. Make sure they include: road, crowd, Jesus, donkey, branches, clothes, hosanna. Write the words on the board or on a large sheet of paper taped on the wall. ʹ Pair kids up so everyone has a partner. If you have an odd number of kids, three kids can work in one group. Distribute a copy of “Word Search” to each group. Explain that there are several Bible story words hidden in the word search puzzle. All groups will look for the same word at one time. For example, lead each group to find the word road. ʹ As each word is found, ask for a volunteer to tell the group what the word had to do with the Bible story. ʹ Remind the kids that Jesus is the Messiah and God sent His only Son, Jesus, to be the only Savior of the world. ʹ Take time to pray. Ask for prayer requests. Remember to thank God for sending Jesus.

WRAP UPCLOSE IT OUT ʹ Review John 14:6 with the children. Remind them of the hand motions they created earlier. Repeat the verse together using the hand motions. Ask: “What did Jesus mean when He said He was the way?” Point out that Jesus was letting people know that He is the only Savior!” ʹ Point out the “Unit 2 Banner.” All together shout, “Jesus is the Savior!” Encourage the kids to tell people what Jesus has done for them by following the plan God had for Jesus when He sent Him to be the only Savior of the world. ʹ Remind the kids to give their One Conversation™ pages to their parents.

THIS WEEK: ʹ Send cards this week to every child in your group. Remind the kids of the Easter Sunday schedule for your church and tell them you are looking forward to seeing them. Pray for each child and her family.

CHOICE 3 › Kids Activity Pages › Pack Item: 14: “Unit 2 Questions”

› Printables: “Word Search” (one copy for every 2 kids)

    › Bible

Option: Write each of the following letters on note cards or sticky notes and post on a wall to make a giant word search. On a large sheet of paper, write the following words for the word bank: road, crowd, Jesus, donkey, branches, clothes, hosanna.
