Mission Statement To lead people to God through Orthodox Christianity and to provide ways for them to live and share God’s love. “Sometimes we think of martyrs as being above human, as legendary figures who lived extraordinary lives, but these men were ordinary. They were men who lived normal lives, poor men who traveled to Libya to feed their families. Yet at the critical moment, they did not deny their Savior or run away from him. Pushed on their knees to be killed, they stood taller than their murderers. They stood tall for the whole world to watch what Christianity is all about” (Samuel Tadros, Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom, http://www.nationalreview.com/article/414252/martyred-copts-witnessed-their-faith-and- courage-interview). These words describe 21 Coptic Orthodox Christians, who on February 14, 2015 became martyrs of Christ. The men had gone to Libya to work and support their families back home in Egypt. A few months ago they were kidnapped by ISIS members fighting in Libya. They were taken simply because they were Christians. They were not the offspring of the Crusaders; Christianity has been in Egypt since Apostolic times. Their beheading was shown on a video dispersed over the Internet. In the video, many died with the words, “Lord Jesus Christ” on their lips. It has been suggested that a simple affirmation of Islamic faith would have saved them, but they chose to die as they had lived, as Christians. Bishop Antonios Aziz Mina of Giza told the Fides news agency, “The name of Jesus was the last word on their lips, they entrusted themselves to the one who would receive them soon after. That name, whispered in the last moments, was like the seal of their martyrdom”. (http://www.americancatholic.org/news/report.aspx?id=14496). It is tempting to focus our attention on the perpetrators of this crime, but I choose to look at the victims. They were both victims and victors. They chose life… not the temporary life of 70, 80 or 90 years but rather life that never ends, because it is life with God. In an age where so many live by expediency- by choosing the path of least resistance- it is heartening to see that some live by principle. At Pascha (Easter) we honor the Lord of All who chose the path of living with us, suffering with us, dying for us, so that He might offer us a victory over death and a life without end. Nothing that we can do in this world ever earns us this gift; nevertheless at times we are called to choose the road less travelled, the one fraught with challenges. “Whoever wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.” Most of us carry a small cross or two, but nothing in comparison with what others bear. Thank God! May the new 21 Martyrs guide us with their example and by their prayers. April/May 2015

Mission Statement

To lead people to God through Orthodox Christianity and to provide ways for them to live and share God’s love.

They stood tall for the whole world to watch what Christianity is all about” (Samuel Tadros, Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom, http://www.nationalreview.com/article/414252/martyred-copts-witnessed-their-faith-and-

courage-interview).

It has been suggested that a simple affirmation of Islamic faith would have saved them, but they

chose to die as they had lived, as Christians.

Bishop Antonios Aziz Mina of Giza told the Fides news agency, “The name of Jesus was the last word on their lips, they entrusted themselves to the one who would receive them soon after. That name, whispered in the last moments, was like the seal of their martyrdom”.

It is tempting to focus our attention on the perpetrators of this crime, but I choose to look at the victims. They were both victims and victors. They chose life… not the temporary life of 70, 80 or 90 years but rather life that never ends, because it is life with God. In an age where so many live by expediency- by choosing the path of

least resistance- it is heartening to see that some live by principle.

Thank God! May the new 21

Martyrs guide us with their example and by their prayers.

Stewardship by Richard Warren

Your Stewardship Committee and Parrish Council would like to thank each and every one who has taken the time to: REFLECT, COMMIT, and PLEDGE during our 2015 Stewardship Campaign. As of 3/1/2015 we have had 265 Steward/families pledge. This compares to 354 in 2014.If you are one of the 89 who pledged in 2014 but have not in 2015 there is still time to help us get to 100% participation. Here are the facts :

Breakdown by pledge size:

Our total 2015 pledged to date $290,447.05 vs 2014 $308,792.73.

Even though some Stewards made significant increases in their pledges, we have not been able to increase our giving to our goal of Stewardship providing 75% of our funding needs. We are still below 55%. Our average pledge of $1096.00 fell far short of the $2029.00 per pledge required to meet the 75% goal. For 2015 we will again be

depending on the Foundation , Fish Fry and the Festival to meet our budget obligations.

If you have any suggestions for our committee please let us know by calling me at 216-287-6886 , email me at

[email protected] or drop off a note to the office.

Your fellow Steward in Christ.

Dick Warren

Treasurer’s Report by Costa Tsatiris

Dear Friends:

I wanted to provide a quick summary on the churches financial position as of December 31, 2014.

Our operating income for 2014 was higher by approximately $40,000 relative to budget. The increase was solely attributed to a higher than budgeted foundation dividend distribution and charitable gifts. Our stewardship collections

approximated what we had budgeted for the year and they approximated prior year collections.

Our operating expenses for 2014 were higher by approximately $60,000 relative to budget. The increase was solely attributed to the kitchen project. As a parish council we carefully monitored all other expenses and tried our best to ensure that our cash was well spent. This was evident as all other expenses combined came under budget by

approximately $5,000.

Excluding any fundraising income we were at an operating deficit. As a percentage our operating expenses were 138% of our operating income. This shows that as a community we are more and more relying on our fundraising. In 2014 the

festival and fish fry contributed approximately $170,000 which approximated budget and prior year results.

Overall the church is in sound financial health. Our cash balances are healthy and have been consistent with previous years. The dividends and realized gains from the foundation will continue to positively impact our finances. We are blessed to have a wonderful and caring community. The good that each one of you does for the community is

immeasurable. I pray that in 2015 you continue to show your support and love.

Orthodox Education By Caryn Cherpas

The students took the opportunity to invite their Godparents to share OE class with them on Sunday February 8. The students and their special guests had their pictures taken for the Valentine frames that they made together. It was a wonderful opportunity for the families to spend the morning together. The Church School is preparing several Lenten specials including: The OCMC Coin Boxes Each year, our students are asked to participate in the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) Coin Box program as part of their Lenten journey. The students are asked to put all their spare change in the coin boxes throughout Lent and return the filled boxes to the OE staff on Palm Sunday. The OCMC uses all the money collected for their mission. Last year we collected over $300.00. LENTEN PASSPORT which are distributed to each student to help them keep track of the Lenten services they attend. This will be used as a means of enrichment and education as the students’ journey through Lent to Pascha. Please help your children earn as many stickers as possible by attending the beautiful services offered. The Holy Friday Retreat will take place on Friday April 10, 2015. We will attend church, offer mini classes, make a craft and eat a Lenten lunch. Please see the attached flyer for more details and remember to RSVP to the OE staff no later than Sunday April 5. The Agape Sunday Service will be followed by the Annual Easter Egg Hunt. The children are asked to bring in their favorite Easter Basket to hold all their treats. Coffee and treats will be provided.

Orthodox Choir of Metropolitan Detroit to Perform Benefit Concert

We are thrilled to announce that the Orthodox Choir of Metropolitan Detroit will perform a concert to benefit ZOE for Life! On Saturday, May 2nd, at St. Mary Romanian Orthodox Cathedral, 3256 Warren Road in Cleveland, Ohio, at 6:00 pm, an Akathist to the Mother of God will be offered for the mothers we serve, as well as our own mothers, whether here with us or on the other side of Heaven. We were privileged to have heard them previously, and were left speechless, and in tears. Please join us to hear this heavenly assembly of voices!

The Senior Hellenic Dancers Want You!

The 2015 dance season is almost here. We will start practices for new dancers after Easter, on Sundays right after Orthodox education (we take Mother’s day off). Practices last about one hour. Eligible dancers are encouraged to attend in order to prepare for the regular summer practices that begin in June. To be eligible for the Senior Hellenic dancers you need to be at least thirteen years old by December 31, 2015. Please join us. Be part of an amazing group of young people who love to

express and show off our Greek culture to the Cleveland community.

Lauren Taylor and mom, Michelle Taylor, moved to Columbus in 2010 and were previously active community members of Sts. Constantine and Helen. Lauren is now 8 years old and has been studying ballet with the professional ballet company in Columbus for the past 3 years. Lauren was selected through an audition to be in the cast of the World Premier of Edward Liang’s new ballet Cinderella. Lauren along with select Academy students have been working with The Company for the past few months and will be on stage at the Capital Theatre from March 20th – 29th. Additionally, Lauren auditioned for their

Summer Intensive program and was selected to participate in this program.

Lauren (on the right) is pictured with a friend and Artistic Director Edward Liang. Edward is a former dancer with New York City Ballet and Nederlands Dans Theater, Liang has built an international reputation as a choreographer. Over the last decade, he has created work for the Bolshoi Ballet, Houston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Kirov Ballet, New York City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Shanghai Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre and Washington

We would like to invite our parishioners who enjoy books and have a curiosity to learn about their heritage, religion,

and culture to visit their library.

Did you know that we have a rich collection of books, nearly 2,000 in both Greek and English? Books for all ages, young

and old. Novels, poetry, cook books, travel guides and Art and architecture to name a few.

We are open after church on Sundays but it is possible to visit the library during the week by appointment. Often the library committee members are working in the library on a weekday afternoon. You may call the church secretary Rose

who will open the library for you.

You might even like to join the Library committee. We meet one afternoon per month. We invite speakers, view DVD’s and often discuss a new book in our collection. It is a most rewarding activity. We exist to be a resource for our church

and our parishioners.

In addition to maintaining and processing books, videos and DVD’s via a computer program, we have a beautiful

collection of authentic regional Folk Costumes that we have exhibited throughout northeast Ohio, Columbus and Pittsburgh.

During the festival, we create wonderful exhibits on our heritage. Most recently we had a display of Greek- American

Celebrities, The Greek Islands, The Wonders of Northern Greece, Greek Theater, The Byzantium etc.

We have a costume committee, we encourage our children to learn about their ancestry via essay contests and honor our high school graduates via scholarships. Yes, we are an active group and would be happy to have you join us.

If interested , telephone Elaine Joaquin at 440-286-1478.

Kaliope Glinatsis Manuel, 76, passed away on February 11, 2015. Kaliope was born March 18, 1938 in Youngstown, OH, a daughter of Nomikos and Angeline Tsimouris Glinatsis (both deceased). She leaves her husband of 33 years, James C. Manuel, stepsons James Jr. (Xiromira) and Jeffrey (Nicolette) Manuel, grandchildren Haley, Marisa, Nicholas, and Andy. Her surviving siblings include her twin sister Katherine (Andy) Kartalis, sister Fanny (Marko) Joanow, brother Peter (Litsa) Glinatsis, and many nieces, nephews, and Godchildren. Preceding Kaliope in death were her sisters Sophia Glinatsis, Eva (John) Vaporis, and brothers, George, Tony, and John Glinatsis. Kaliope graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1955 and from Youngstown State in 1959 with a BS in Education. She retired (1990) as a teacher at Orange High School, Pepper Pike, OH after 31 years and managed the Orange

School Employees Credit Union for 15 years.

In Memoriam

Marsha Peters (nee Passaris), 94, passed away on March 9, 2015. Beloved wife of the

late Moskos. Most loving mother of Alexander and Dean (Heidi) Peters. Cherished

grandmother of James, Magdalene, and Chrysis. Sister of Stanley (deceased). Beloved

member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Library.

Penelope Mitchell, 97, passed away on March 1, 2015. She was married to Chris Mitchell, the founder of Mitchell’s Fine Candies, in her native Greece in December of 1948. Together they journeyed to Cleveland, where she joined him in his chocolate-making enterprise, which he had

founded in 1939.

For over 50 years, until Chris’ death in 2000, they worked side-by-side – Chris creating the recipes and crafting the chocolates…Penelope, dipping the chocolates, packaging them, and working behind the counter. Theirs was a partnership made in heaven, the gifts and talents of the

one, complementing the other.

Their son, Bill, joined the business in 1977, gradually assuming more responsibility as his parents aged. After her husband’s death, Penelope continued to come to the store every workday –

greeting customers by name, remembering their favorite chocolates, and taking special joy in meeting the second, then the third generation of customers who, over the years, had become friends. Until a little over two years ago, she maintained that full and active life, helping and encouraging the staff, greeting customers, and gracing the selections of those she’d

grown to love with an extra chocolate, just for the joy of seeing them smile.
