Gifted and Talented ProgramThe mission of the Kern High School District GATE
program is to provide appropriate educational opportunities that challenge our brightest students. These students come from a variety of cultural and
socioeconomic backgrounds as well as prior educational settings.
The program reflects our concern for divergent thinkers. The first two years of our rigorous curriculum focus on flexible and responsive student inquiry and discovery
learning. Additionally, we place an emphasis on creativity through cultural, fine arts and enrichment
activities.
The program is designed to encourage participation and to enhance superior abilities, talents and/or potential.
Our commitment includes instruction toward successful citizenship, high ethical standards and personal
development.

KHSD GATE Identification Process
The Kern High School District mailed out a letter to the parents or guardians of all 8th grade students who will enroll in the KHSD for next year.
Students may be nominated for GATE consideration by: Their parent Their teacher/Junior high school Self nomination
Students are considered for GATE by using a combination of components: Test scores based on achievement tests taken in the spring
(Math and English) Junior High GPA Teacher Evaluations (Math and English) Score on the Otis Lennon test (if applicable)
Official selection and notification of GATE students will occur in late May/ early June.
Parent permission forms are filled out and returned prior to
student participation in the GATE program.

What are “A-G” Requirements?
The "A to G" requirements are the entrance requirements for California's University of California and California State University systems. Entrance requirements for other university systems may vary. Grades of "C" or better are required in all College Preparatory courses. Minimum weighted GPA for applicants is 3.0
