General InformationCollege today is the result of a merger of two secondary Catholic schools that began at the same time in the district in 1949.

COLLEGE NAMEGilroy was named after Cardinal Norman Thomas Gilroy, the Archbishop of Sydney. This was the name given to the secondary boys school administered by the Christian Brothers.

Santa Maria was the name of the secondary girls’ section of Lourdes School which was administered by the Sisters of Mercy.

When the two schools became one, the name Gilroy Santa Maria College naturally evolved.

COLLEGE MOTTOS“Facere Et Docere” meaning “to do and to teach”, is the motto of the Christian Brothers and of many schools throughout the English-speaking world conducted by the Order. It was therefore the motto of the former Cardinal Gilroy College.

“Sub Tuum Praesidium” is the motto of the Sisters of Mercy meaning “under your protection” is a phrase taken from the beginning prayer of the Litany to our Lady, familiar to many generations of Catholics – “We fly to thy patronage, O Holy Mother of God.” The words “under thy patronage” or “protection” were taken from the Latin version of the prayer – “Sub tuum praesidium, configimus sancta dei genetrix.” It was the motto of the former Santa Maria High School.

McAuleyRice O’Meara Catherine McAuley, a lady from Dublin, Ireland, saw the plight of young women in what was then one of the largest cities in the

British Empire. She saw the need for education of these Catholic

girls who, up until then, had been neglected and left to grow into an “unwanted class of British

citizens”. In order to achieve this work she founded the Sisters of

Mercy whose ministry throughout the world is still very active today.

Edmund Rice was a very successful businessman, a chandler for the

ships that traded from the flourishing Irish port of Waterford. Like his

fellow citizen, Catherine McAuley, he too saw the need to help the

disadvantaged children, especially boys, who because of their poverty and low standing under British rule, were doomed to a life of servitude

and waste. After the tragic death of his wife, he used his own wealth to establish the religious order of the Brothers of the Christian Schools of Ireland who today minister as

Christian Brothers to many people throughout the world in various

ministries.

David O’Meara was a diocesan Irish priest of the Rockhampton Diocese, the northern section of

which became our present Diocese of Townsville. As parish priest of East Ingham he was noted for his unorthodox ways and his passion for providing Catholic Education

to the people of the Herbert River district. Without Fr. Dave O’Meara, the Christian Brothers would never

have ministered in Ingham, and Cardinal Gilroy College, the then

male section of our co-educational Gilroy Santa Maria College, would

never have existed.

COLLEGE HOUSESEvery student at Gilroy Santa Maria College belongs to one of three house groups. Siblings are placed in the same house.

The Houses competes for in the College’s Inter-House Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals. Students are encouraged to develop a team loyalty approach to their houses and to participate within an atmosphere of friendly rivalry

and competition. The Inter-House competition is not solely based on sporting fixtures but also academic, cultural and recreational pursuits. Throughout the year a variety of activities count towards the Gilroy Santa Maria Cup, our year-long house competition.

The names of the Houses tell some of the history of Gilroy Santa Maria College and its founders.

College Colours ~ Blue and GoldThe colours of Gilroy Santa Maria College’s crest and uniform, blue and gold, are taken from the colours of the individual schools. Royal blue is the traditional Church colour symbolising Our Lady – actually under her title “Stella Maris” – “Star of the Sea”, thus the colour blue from that of the sea.

The gold colour symbolises light and reminds us that the light of Jesus Christ is available to all people. Thus the mission of the College is to enhance the light of Christ in every person we meet.

The free tutoring service provides an opportunity where students can revise classwork and gain additional exposure to key concepts in their learning area throughout the entire year.

PASTORAL CARE & BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT

The purpose of Pastoral Care at Gilroy Santa Maria College is to promote the building of a Christian community through cooperative learning, and using consistent management practices when supporting students. Students, teachers and parents need to be aware that behavioural mistakes have consequences. All members of the Gilroy Santa Maria College community are encouraged to live the values of our Mission Statement to uphold the dignity and the rights of each person within our College environment.Central to our community is the belief that maintaining positive relationships underpin acceptable behaviour. The key element of positive good relationships leads us to recognise the dignity of students and teachers, where each has rights and responsibilities to each other. Pastoral Care at Gilroy Santa Maria College is a program of planned strategies and informal experiences that has a holistic approach to the education of young women and men through the involvement and care of all its shareholders. It places the student at the centre of its activities and aims to assist all members of the Gilroy Santa Maria College Community reach their full potential.Enrolment at this school is dependent on acceptance of the school rules, codes of behaviour and policies, including those regarding curriculum, discipline, dress, conduct, Workplace Health & Safety and well-being. School expectations and policies are in the interest of the wellbeing of the whole school community. The College utilises a “Traffic Light System” of Phases to identify varying levels of student behaviour. Each phase of the Traffic Light System indicates an escalation in behaviour infringements and is characterised by four colours.

GREEN YELLOW AMBER RED

GREEN PHASEThe Green Phase describes the behaviour that we expect at Gilroy Santa Maria College. These behaviours are what we value in matters of discipline. Students are supported in this phase by a range of positive rewards from teachers, as well as formal recognition in the “Student of the Month” program.

YELLOW PHASE The Yellow Phase describes minor breaches of discipline. The Yellow Phase of discipline is generally dealt with by Class Teachers and Homeroom Teachers.

AMBER PHASEThe Amber Phase describes ongoing breaches of discipline or more serious single incidents. The Amber Phase of discipline is generally dealt with by Pastoral Leaders. This phase typically involves a lunchtime or after school detention and is an opportunity for Leaders and Students to discuss issues, with the aim of achieving a positive outcome.

RED PHASE The Red Phase describes ongoing breaches of discipline or major single incidents. The Red Phase of discipline is generally dealt with by the Assistant Principal - Pastoral (and other members of the Admin team). This phase typically involves an after school or Saturday morning detention. Failure to respond positively to these measures may result in suspension, and ultimately the cancellation of enrolment.

Catholic Schools are established by the Catholic community specifically to support the family by nurturing its children in the education of their Catholic faith and the living of the gospel values in their daily lives. At the point of entry to a Catholic school, parents, students and staff must have an understanding and acceptance of these values and goals, so as to preserve the distinctive character of our schools and to justify their existence.

It also must be noted that there may be confidential circumstances only known to the Principal that may influence decision-making concerning families with great pastoral and family needs. All families accepting enrolment within the school
