Cube Lab Overview

Cube Lab Overview (cont’d)

• Each NanoRacks standardized CubeSat design, called a Cube Lab Module, plugs into the Central Electrical Box of a Cube Lab Frame for USB standard interface.

• The USB interfaces provide EXPRESS Rack power to connected Modules & a path for data file transfer.

• Each Module’s plug-in leads to a USB port on the front panel of a Cube Lab Frame’s Central Electrical Box.

• Data files are transferred by temporary connection of a Cube Lab Data Cable (USB A/B cable) between an EXPRESS Laptop Computer (ELC) & the USB ports.

• No payload-unique software of any kind is to be installed – ELC standard load USB drive access is utilized. File transfer has been checked with both A31P & T61P ELCs.

• Cube Lab shipments (Frame shipments, Resupply, &/or Returns) are planned for 19A MPLM, ULF4 MRM1, 38P, 39P, ULF6, 40P, ULF5, 41P, ATV-2, HTV-2, & 42P. Further shipments are being planned for future Increments as well.

• In all -- ONLY 3 Frames are planned for flight; they are to go up on 19A, ULF4, & ULF6.

• All Frames & Modules are made to be transported to the ISS as soft-stow in CTBs.

• Payload Characteristics• Cube Lab Experiment Hardware consists of these components:

• SSE IVA Hand Tools Kit ¼” standard socket driver will be implemented as an experiment activation tool if the content of a Cube Lab Module requires it (concerns shipments post ULF4).

• Each Cube Lab Frame provides stowage, power, heat rejection and USB data port connectivity simultaneously for up to 16 Cube Lab Modules.

• Each Cube Lab Frame draws a maximum of 60 Watts of continuous EXPRESS Rack Power.• All 3 Frames are planned for insert in EXPRESS Rack #4 (1st Frame in Locker 3, 2nd in Locker 7, &

3rd in Locker 1) in the JEM.• Fan filters for the Cube Lab Frames will require monthly maintenance cleaning (wiping of the

filter).

Currently only OpNom, IPLAT, & HFIT have been worked in order to meet a 19A MPLM & ULF4 MRM1 shipment that will be yellow-tagged as non-operable & be soft-stowed until Operations is approved.

OpNom

• OpNom telecon to finalize proposed OpNom names held 10/26/09 with: PD POC Michael Johnson / NanoRacks Chief Technical Officer Jenna Ruddock / Ops Lead, Janice Voss / Crew Rep, Patricia Williams / Astronaut Office Rep, Diane Rowland / Astronaut Office Rep, Mercedes Galloway / OpNom Rep, David Segovia / IPLAT Rep, & Susan Lufkin / PIM.

• PD agreed to match-up Engineering Part Names & Experiment Name (as close as possible) with OpNom proposed names resolved at the 10/26/09 telecon: Cube Lab, Cube Lab Frame, Cube Lab Module, Cube Lab Data Cable.

• Following 10/26/09 telecon, Naming conventions were incorporated into ICD draft, Manifest data, PIA, PIM Schedule, & Annex 5 documentation.

• Shipments are referred to in Integration documents & MIDAS as Cube Lab Frame-#, Cube Lab Resupply-#, & Cube Lab Return-#. NanoRacks documents refer to Cube Lab Frame-# shipments as Cube Lab-#.

• OpNom ECR submittal by Ops Lead made 11/6/09.

CUBE LAB-1 TRANSLATION/INSTALLATION/ACTIVATIONThe Cube Lab-1 is soft-stowed in an MPLM RSR during launch. Once on-orbit, the Cube Lab-1 Assembly is

transferred to ISS for installation/activation in an EXPRESS Rack Locker. The crew will perform the following operations:

1. Assemble Cube Lab Frame by aligning the rear plate assembly color codes with the central electronics box color codes and inserting the 2 PIP pins into the assembly holes.

2. Install Cube Lab Module-1 on USB Plug P1 and verify it is properly seated.3. Install Cube Lab Module-2 on USB Plug P8 and verify it is properly seated.4. Verify nothing is blocking the EXPRESS Rack Rear breather and Cube Lab Frame fan inlet/outlet ports.

Verify the inlet filter is clean and remove any loose items/debris from the inside of the Cube Lab Frame. Insert the Cube Lab Frame into the EXPRESS Rack Locker and close/latch the locker door.

5. Verify the Cube Lab Frame circuit breaker is open and the EXPRESS Rack power switch is “off”. 6. Mate the EXPRESS Rack power cable to the Cube Lab Frame power connector.7. Turn the EXPRESS Rack Power Connector on. 8. Close Cube Lab Frame PWR CB. 9. Verify the Cube Lab Frame PWR LED is illuminated.

CUBE LAB-1 DEACTIVATIONThe crew will perform the following operations to deactivate the Cube Lab Frame:

1. Open (pull) the Cube Lab Frame circuit breaker and turn the EXPRESS Rack power switch to “off”. 2. Verify the Cube Lab Frame PWR LED is extinguished.

INSTALLATION/REMOVAL OF CUBE LAB MODULE IN CUBE LAB FRAMETo remove a Cube Lab Module from the Cube Lab Frame, the crew will perform the following operations:

1. Open the NANORACKS CB and power-off the EXPRESS Rack power connector. 2. Open the EXPRESS Rack Locker door 3. Remove the Cube Lab Frame from the EXPRESS Rack Locker 4. Unplug the desired Cube Lab Module by pulling the Cube Lab Module from the desired USB Type B Plug. 5. Stow the Cube Lab Module for return to Earth or disposal. 6. Verify clear air ports and lack of debris inside Cube Lab Frame. 7. Replace the Cube Lab Frame in the EXPRESS Rack Locker. 8. Close the EXPRESS Rack Locker door.9. Close the NANORACKS CB and power-on the EXPRESS Rack power connector.10. Verify Cube Lab Frame PWR LED is illuminated.11. To install a Cube Lab Module in the Cube Lab Frame, the crew will perform the following operations:12. Open the NANORACKS CB and power-off the EXPRESS Rack power connector. 13. Open the EXPRESS Rack Locker door. 14. Remove the Cube Lab Frame from the EXPRESS Rack Locker. 15. Unstow the Cube Lab Module for insertion into the Cube Lab Frame. 16. Insert the desired Cube Lab Module by pushing the Cube Lab Module on the desired USB Type B Plug. 17. Verify clear air ports and lack of debris inside Cube Lab Frame. 18. Replace the Cube Lab Frame in the EXPRESS Rack Locker. 19. Close the EXPRESS Rack Locker door.20. Close the Cube Lab Frame CB and power-on the EXPRESS Rack power connector.21. Verify Cube Lab Frame PWR LED is illuminated.

CLEANING CUBE LAB FRAME DEBRIS SCREEN (ONCE PER MONTH)To perform the monthly Cube Lab Frame Debris Screen the crew will perform the following operations:

1. Open the NANORACKS CB and power-off the EXPRESS Rack power connector. 2. Open the EXPRESS Rack Locker door. 3. Remove the Cube Lab Frame from the EXPRESS Rack Locker. 4. Inspect the Cube Lab Debris Screen for contamination. 5. Clean the Cube Lab Frame Debris Screen by dabbing with tape. 6. Verify clear air ports and lack of debris inside Cube Lab Frame. 7. Replace the Cube Lab Frame in the EXPRESS Rack Locker. 8. Close the EXPRESS Rack Locker door.9. Close the Cube Lab Frame CB and power-on the EXPRESS Rack power connector.10. Verify Cube Lab Frame PWR LED is illuminated.

1. Unstow Cube Lab Data Cable.2. Unstow EXPRESS Rack Laptop and power up laptop.3. Insert USB Type A Plug into EXPRESS Rack Laptop USB jack.4. Insert USB Type B Plug into desired Cube Lab Frame USB jack (J1 – J16).5. Look for a new USB Device icon on the EXPRESS Rack Laptop Computer. 6. Open the new USB device icon. 7. Drag desired data file to the EXPRESS Rack Laptop Hopper File. 8. Close the Cube Lab Module data file icon. 9. Open “safe eject” application and select Cube Lab Module USB port.10. Cube Lab Documentation Status Cube Lab Export Classification Letter completed October 7, 2009.

Cube Lab PIA Submitted to R. Jones Office for Final Signature November 18, 2009 (OZ-09-072).

Cube Lab account has been established in PDL for PD submittals.

Phase 0/I/II Flight Safety Data Package submitted to Safety Engineers on 10/23/09.

Cube Lab Hardware ICD (SSP 53123-ICD) still in internal review. Presentation at PECP planned for 11/23/09 to release to external review for baselining.

Baseline ICD will cover testing for Cube Lab Module content of 1st two shipments. A Hardware ICD PIRN Update will be submitted for defining testing of future Cube Lab Modules as more data about their content becomes available.

Manifesting & IDRD Annex 5 are Baselined for Increment 23/24.

CEF in work to modify Manifest & Annex 5 Tables concerning:

• Editorial changes to 19A Ascent PTP Table;

• Corrections to 19A MIDAS Entries;

• Shifting of 30 Cube Lab Modules off ULF4, Additions to 40P;

• Change to Module Return in ULF6 Return Manifest;

• De-manifesting of Cube Lab Activation Tools;

• Addition to SSE Table for Use of IVA Hand Tool Kit’s ¼” Socket Driver.
