4-H offers clubs, workshops, camps & much more!

Have you seen our calendar? February and March are packed with programming! If you aren’t enrolled in 4-H, what are you waiting for!? Nearly every weekend from now through summer is offering exciting educational opportunities for area youth.

Clubs are beginning to meet! Weekend workshops at Kettunen Center offer outstand-

ing experiences in vet science, livestock, robotics, agriculture and leadership skills. Many

4-H camps are beginning to advertise and offer registration soon, like 4-H Exploration

Days, 4-H Veterinary Science Camp, and Great Lake Natural Resources Camp. We’re

partnered with local businesses and schools to offer Mock Interview, a chance for youth to

practice interviewing before they are face-to-face with a future employer. Our office even

programs for fair exhibitors who aren’t club-enrolled, welcoming them to obtain exhibitor

education hours to help them succeed in the show ring and beyond! There’s even an online

option this year for market livestock education class. We have much to offer! Members

are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities — and all are encouraged to vol-

unteer and help us create new ones!

World Food Prize Michigan Youth

Institute registrations due April 1

As millions across the globe deal with food insecurity,

the World Food Prize Michigan Youth Institute (WFP

MIYI) offers young people an opportunity to be part of

the solution. Held May 9, the event seeks to inspire and

prepare the next generation of global leaders to end world hunger.

Occurring in two locations, East Lansing and Marquette/Chatham, attendees have the opportunity

to share their ideas related to global food security with experts and other Michigan youth while

learning how university faculty and staff members, researchers and students are working to address

world hunger.

To participate, youth should be in grades 8-12 and register by the April 1 deadline. As part of the

registration process, youth are required to prepare a two- to five-page research paper about one of

twenty grand global challenges which are related to food, hunger and poverty. At the event, youth

present and discuss their papers with other attendees and research and industry experts. They also

participate in interactive activities related to global food challenges and engage with area experts to

discuss solutions to global hunger and poverty.

The top performing students at the WFP MIYI will be selected to attend the World Food Prize

Global Youth Institute in Des Moines, Iowa, in October. For more information, visit https://

Start planning your 4-H Exploration Days adventure!

A fun summer favorite for Michigan 4-H’ers across the state, plans

are well underway for the 2019 4-H Exploration Days! This

signature MSU precollege program, to be held June 19-21, allows

youth to stay on the campus of Michigan State University while

attending classroom and field trip sessions throughout their stay. In

addition to enjoying fun and learning on campus, attendees build the

skills they need to successfully transition to college and to life as an

adult.

The event features more than 200 session choices. Begin planning

your stay when the 4-H Exploration registration books become

available mid-February! Topics include animal science, business and

entrepreneurship, international language and culture, performing

and visual arts, and science, engineering, and technology.

Use the registration book to make your top session selections in advance of registration opening on March 12

(also be on the lookout for session age restrictions). Sessions will fill up quickly and all registration

information is due to your county’s MSU Extension office at the end of April, although specific dates vary.

Resolve to have a great 4-H year

As we start to think ahead to the New Year, how can 4-H clubs

resolve to improve in the year ahead? Here are ten suggestions to

make the upcoming year a successful one.

Resolve that:

1. Club meetings will start and end on time. 2. Business meetings will follow Robert's Rules of Order and that all club paperwork, such as minutes, club inventory and financial statements, will be completed in a timely manner. 3. All members will take part in discussions and have a say in decisions that are made. Keep a chart with each members’ name and when they speak at business meetings. 4. The club meeting place will be a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment for all club members. 5. Fun will be included in each meeting. 6. A learning activity will be included in each club meeting. Ideas include exploring a new 4-H curriculum, having members volunteer to do a demonstration, doing a show and tell about each members' favorite project, or bringing in a guest speaker. 7. The club will pursue at least one community service project chosen, planned and celebrated by the club. 8. New members will have a buddy they may talk with about any 4-H questions. 9. The 4-H pledge will be said at every meeting. 10. Every club member will be recognized in some way to let them know they are cared about.

Citizenship Washington Focus registration available

Registration for the 2019 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) program, taking place June

22-29, is now available. Program participants learn about the nation's government by participating

in hands-on leadership workshops and touring historical sites in Washington, D.C. The cost of the

2019 4-H CWF program is $1,500 and includes all meals (except seven meals in transit), lodging

Now recruiting for 4-H Capitol

Experience 2019

4-H Capitol Experience is now recruiting for 2019

participants! This annual statewide program, occurring

March 17-20, helps prepare youth for active citizenship by

focusing on civic engagement and public policy.

More than 100 teens from around the state converge on

Lansing to experience state government in action and learn

how they can influence policy issues. Participants interact

with legislators, state agency staff, and other resource people to learn how policy is made.

Attendees will leave the program having a great understanding of the responsibilities of a citizen, be

able to identify different aspects of a policy issue that may affect individuals and communities, and

know potential careers in public policy. Cost for this event is $360 and includes most meals, lodging

education about pollination and how pollinators’ health and

habitat affect food production. Teens will be trained to

present this information to their community.

5. Mar 7: Heroes to Hives Join the 4-H table at Missaukee

Conservation District’s annual dinner. Our program is Heroes

to Hives, a unique program through MSU Extension that

supports veterans and honey bees. Order tickets
