Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers
• A modifier is a word or phrase that
describes another part of a sentence.
It should be as close as possible to the
word it modifies.
Dangling Modifiers
• A dangling modifier is a phrase that
modifies a word not clearly stated in
the sentence. Often these can be
unintentionally humorous.
Activity
• I will give you a strip with a dangling modifier. You are to create a picture that reflects the dangling modifier. You will also write the dangling modifier at the top of the page, and the corrected sentence at the bottom of the page. Write your name, class, and Misplaced Modifiers Activity on the back.
Example
• Grown by the farmer, my younger brother ate
the pieces of fruit.
My younger brother ate the pieces of fruit
grown by the farmer.
