Tips for a Green Moving Day!Moving can be very stressful. Plan-ning ahead is the best way to en-sure that your move can gosmoothly. I’ve witnessed peoplescrambling at the last minute to tryto figure out what to do with a vari-ety of things that they finally real-ized they actually no longer want orneed. With a little bit of planning, agreen moving day is easier than youthink! The Éco-quartier NDG hasa multitude of tips to think ofwhen you're planning your move:

Hazardous household waste:Old batteries, printer cartridges, paint, pesticides, expired medica-tion, burnt out neon lights, and oldtelevisions should not go in thegarbage due to their toxic nature.Check with either your local storesor the Eco-quartier to find outwhich stores accept these usedproducts. The ecocentres are also agood place to dispose of these

items, but please call ahead as theecocentres are being revamped.

Getting rid of stuff: Try offeringunwanted objects to friends orother community members, or visitweb sites such as Craigslist, Freecy-

cle and Kijji. You can either sell oroffer things for free. As the sayinggoes, One man’s trash is anotherman’s treasure.

Clothing, books, toys, and smallappliances: Please bring these

items to your local used item store(Renaissance, Salvation Army, etc).

Odds and ends (wool, bits offabric, tiles, etc): Before throwingthese away, look up to see if it'spossible to donate them where theycan be used: here (in French) forMontreal's reuse & second-hand di-rectories! Please consult the City’s site, Infocollecte here to learn on which daysyou can throw out large items likemattresses or fridges. The CDN-NDG borough has a weekly bulkyitem collection. Consider renting reusable plasticbins as an eco-friendly alternativeto buying cardboard boxes. The GoBac initiative offers durable andeco-friendly moving boxes.

Summer studentsOnce again this year, the Éco-quar-tier NDG was very lucky to receivegenerous funding from ServiceCanada for a number of summerpositions: Green patrol, environ-mental camp animator, green alleyagent, horticultural agent, and foodwaste collection agent. All positionsare 9 weeks long, so the summerstaff will be able to help witha variety of projects this sum-mer.Some of the projects that thestudents will be working oninclude: Offering weekly in-formation kiosks in the parks, providing camp animations, helping residents with greenalleys, verifying recycling and

food waste bins, and the list justgoes on and on! These activities will not only bene-fit the borough, but the studentswho study in environmental fieldswill have the opportunity to furthertheir learning through hands-on ac-tivities. Every year, the students tellme how much they learned from

the summer activities.Once again this year, the CDN-NDG borough is funding ragweedremoval. Last year’s project re-moved more than 350kgs of rag-weed from NDG alone, and thegoal is that if ragweed is ripped upyear after year, there will be lesspollen and eventually there will be

no more in the neighbour-hood. That should help ev-eryone breathe a little better!

If you see the Éco-quartierNDG staff busy improvingthe NDG environment thissummer, please say hi!

Preventing bicycle theftWhen you purchase your bicycle, make sure to note (by writing or bytaking a photo) the serial number, that can usually be found under themain frame of the bike. Take a pic-ture of your bicycle as well for fu-ture reference.

1: When you need to lock yourbike, make sure to lock it withand onto something solid andreliable. This is an important detail in orderto avoid bike theft whether it be atyour school, in your back yard orporch, in your garage as well as onthe street.Locking your bike with just a cableis not necessarily the best idea andit’s muchmore preferable to pur-chase a good quality U or D lock orat least a thick chain (at least 10mmthick) to make it tougher for a thief. The difference between a cable anda U or D lock is that a cable can becut by using simple tools whilequality U or D locks has to be cutwith an electric tool/grinder.Some additional recommendationsare the use of a seat post lock andanti-theft wheel bolts, like for ex-ample PinHead or IXOW.

2: Bring your bike inside to pre-vent theft and decrease risk oflosing parts. It’s somewhat evident and efficientbut it can make a big difference ifyou can bring your bike inside, eit-her at home or at your workingplace.

3: Install a security camera athome or make sure to lock yourbike in an area where there aresecurity cameras installed.Cameras can be a very good idea asit can deter a potential thief and

can also catch the thief in the actof theft. Most cameras can also becontrolled through apps that canalert you directly when someone isapproaching the area where yourbike is. Some of the better securitycameras include IP Reolink 4MPand 5MP Super HD.

4: Protect your bike with a GPStracker. The anti theft tracker systems are

usually equipped with a GPStracker and can be installed dis-creetly inside the handle bar onyour bike. This is a very good wayto protect your bike as the thiefdoes usually not know how to dis-able the signal. The police can then track your bikein real time and be able to arrestthe thief as well as return yourbike. The most popular tracking devicesare Sherlock and Spybike.

5: Protect your bike by engrav-ing it.The SPVM’s Projet Numéro canprevent bike theft and increase thechance of getting your bike backincase it gets stolen. This engraving service can be ob-tained free of cost at most policestations in Montreal as well as bysome of your local Tandem offices.

Call your local police station orlocal Tandem office to assure thatthey offer this service.

Several kiosks are also offered bySPVM and Tandem throughout theyear that not only gives you achance to get your bike engravedbut also discuss any safety aspectsof biking. You need to, obviously, bring yourbike in order to get it engraved as

well as piece of I.D.For more info on the engraving inthe Cote-des-Neiges and Notre-Dame-de-Grace borough callSPVM station 11 – 514-280-0111,SPVM station 26 - 514-280-0126Tandem CDN—NDG 514-736-2732.
