It is believed that Mint Hill was settled around 1750, by

settlers from Pennsylvania and Maryland. In 1770, the

settlers established Philadelphia Presbyterian Church. In

1889, The Bain Academy, endowed by the Church, opened

as a boarding school. It had almost 160 students when it

burned at the turn of the century and was rebuilt in 1904

and turned over to the county school system in the early

1920’s.

Town officials gave up their original charter in 1910

because Mecklenburg County refused to build roads

through incorporated areas and roads were needed. It’s

unclear how the Town of Mint Hill got its name; however,

one theory is that gold coins were made during the gold

rush in the early 1800’s. Diamonds and platinum were

rumored to be found during this time period, too.

Mint Hill is still considered a rare find, as the Town has low

tax rates and a strong sense of community. The productive

and involved residents of Mint Hill make the Town a

wonderful and desirable place to live. The Mint Hill

Volunteer Fire Department, Mint Hill Police Department,

Mint Hill Historical Society, Mint Hill Athletic Association,

Mint Hill Arts, Veterans of Foreign War Post #4059 and

Mint Hill Chamber of Commerce are all valuable resources

for Town residents and visitors alike. We encourage you to

take an active role in these and other service organizations.

On behalf of the elected officials, we welcome you to

discover Mint Hill.

Whenever Boyd Davis walks into a hometown restaurant during work hours, he wears a bow tie. He says some people think a person, who wears a bow tie, works as an attorney. “I wear a bow tie because I stand out in a crowd plus it makes people smile,” Davis said.Davis is the Assistant Vice President at First Citizens Bank and Treasurer of the Mint Hill Chamber of

Commerce. From his experience, he believes businesses grow when they find new ways to stand out.Davis and other chamber members want to promote hometown businesses through an annual expo.“The business expo focuses on your medium to small businesses,” Davis said. “A lot of times with the

small businesses in a community like Mint Hill, they don’t have the advertising budget or the exposure thatsome of the big companies in Charlotte might have.”

In 2012, chamber board members reexamined its mission. They reviewed what projects and eventshelped businesses and what did not. Six members of the chamber, including Davis, formed a separate committee. After it determined the chamber’s new mission, the committee planned for the expo.

“When I think of a business expo, I think what a great opportunity to network, number one,“ Davissaid, “number two, what a great opportunity for a business owner to expand and grow their business in anew channel, and also generate leads.”

Members planned to host the event at Blair Road United Methodist Church on March 14, 2013. Whenregistration opened, thirty businesses signed up, including three non-chamber members. According to Davis, interest in the expo immediately surged and the chamber created a waiting list.

“We had about forty or fifty total interested business owners,” Davis said. “We were only able to allowthirty because of how we had the structure laid out.”

The committee planned for the business expo to be afford-able for the vendors. Exhibit fees for chamber members cost $30and non-members paid $55. It cost Sam’s Club, the title sponsor,$500. Three area sponsors, Rely on Local, BB&T and Scott ClarkToyota, paid $250 each. According to Davis, 70 percent of businesses have never participated in a business expo.

The gymnasium at Blair Road provided ample space for vendors. Outside, business owners, chamber volunteers and thepublic had plenty of parking.

“The first area you would see when you walk in is the mainsponsor,” Davis said. “In the corners we had what we call the areasponsors.”

To help vendors, the committee grouped similar businesseswith area sponsors. For example, retail businesses were placedwith other retail vendors, but Davis said vendors will be organizedanother way in 2014.

Expos hosted in cities such as Charlotte become expensive.Larger businesses have more opportunities at expos and in advertising. According to Davis, “mom and pop” businessesshaped Mint Hill, but sometimes they could not afford the sameprospects as larger businesses. The 2013 expo presented something different.

“This gives business owners the opportunity to do some-thing different and get different results,” Davis said. “There are alot of moms and pops, and they really drive this economy.”

In preparation for the event, the committee expanded thethought process of the expo as a three-dimensional project. Theirplans included a workshop for businesses, the expo and makeoverthe chamber’s Web site.

Executive Administrator Sandy Barnett, of the Mint HillChamber of Commerce created the theme “Grow at the Expo!”The logo incorporated a bright green color to emphasize growth.Three goals for the expo connected to the chamber’s mission:network, expand, and generate.

Committee members Sue Wolf, Bruce Petty, Sandy Barnettand Nancy Bradley worked to provide guidelines and workshopsfor business vendors to maximize their exposure at the expo.

“If you’ve never participated in an expo or trade show, youmight not know how it’s going to work,” Davis said. “You don’tknow how you’re going to market your business.”

Three weeks before the expo in February 2013, the freeworkshop for the participating businesses took place.

“How do you market your booth?” Davis said. “Nancy puttogether some helpful tips.”

Ten to fifteen businesses participated in the workshop thatBradley facilitated. Bradley led the event and discussed everythingfrom how a vendor’s booth appearance is important to include adrawing and how to establish a follow-up process. Bradley taughtthem there is a short amount of time to contact a potential customer from an expo after it ends. If a business owner waits too long, the interest of the potential customer is gone.

“We were very happy and very excited,” Davis said.Several people, who volunteered, never participated in an

expo before.”On March 14, 2013, “Grow at the Expo!” introduced 200

people to 30 vendors. The event was free to the public.“At some business expos you have to pay a fee,”Davis said.

Twelve volunteers helped with the event. They set up a stage forvendors‚ big giveaways. The main sponsor, Sam’s Club, had adrawing for a free T.V. People who entered were required to bepresent when the winner was announced.

Davis said drawings are a great way to encourage people tostay the entire time.

Wingate University’s Director of Marketing & Communications,Jeff Atkinson, was the keynote speaker. He announced winners ofdoor prizes. Most vendors provided a key element, such as a prizeor game, to encourage public participation. Prizes included giftcertificates, free flower arrangements and memberships. Theprizes were all donated by the vendors.

As the primary sponsor, Sam’s Club hadfour mini-commercials shown during the expo. The area sponsors had one mini-commercial each.A demonstration at an expo encourages participa-tion and keeps people at the event.

Including the workshop, the chamberencouraged business to business relationships. Theevent allowed similar businesses to connect withowners who are similar and different.

Davis said feedback from Mint HillCommissioner Tina Ross encouraged the commit-tee. According to Davis, she called it a “greatcommunity event”. The chamber was excitedwith the expo’s first year, but Davis added it didn’twant to set its goals too high.

“We have momentum to make it a betterevent,” Davis said. “Let’s build on what we’veaccomplished. Everyone was excited with theresults. We didn’t lose money. We were able tomake money.”

From the money the chamber raises atevents like the expo, it invests in events, includingthe expo, that support local businesses.

The expo also exposes non-members towhat the chamber of commerce offers businesses.Out of three non-chamber members at the event, two of them joined the chamber.

“In 2014, the chamber’s top priority is theflow of events,” Davis said. Feedback from the2013 “Grow at the Expo!” revealed a need forsite coordination. Some space was wasted, andnext year volunteers will measure everything atBlair. The committee plans to use a room near thegym for more businesses.

With a better planned layout, the com-mittee, which will still consist of six members, hopes it will become easier for the public andbusiness owners to travel through.

Improved layout planswill allow the committee tobump participants up to 50.Currently, the business expo doesn’t have amain sponsor. Vendors involved in the expolast year can participate this year. The commit-tee has 20 businesses on the waiting list.

The budget will also change.“Our annual budget for the business

expo this year was two-thousand five-hundred

dollars because of a grant funding gap,” Davis said. “We cutour expenses down because our budget was low. Our expensescame within two-hundred fifty dollars of our target.”

For the 2014 expo, the committee has set a $5,000budget.

Another workshop prior to the expo is also planned.Davis would like to have an electronic template for businesses to give immediate feedback after the expo.

The Mint Hill Chamber of Commerce also underwent amakeover. Working with Mike Habenicht of Kaleidoscopic, abusiness that offers graphic design services to municipalities andbusinesses, the chamber had a new Web site with a multi-phaseplan.

The chamber wanted to make its Web site more accessible on Google. Phase one began in April. Davis said thechamber wanted to reach all businesses in the community.

“He is a community business and chamber member,”Davis said.

Habenicht programmed the Web site so that the chamberappeared first when a person did a Web search on Google. Healso showed chamber board members how to log onto the Website and see how many people have visited. Davis said he wasimpressed at the number of visitors online and how long theystayed on the Web site.

“We’ve got to be able to reach businesses and the community,” Davis said. “What better way to do that is toupdate our Web site.” During the second phase, the chamberwants to create a tab for its business expo. The page for theexpo will be listed like a banner advertisement,” Davis said.

Mint Hill Business Expo is also a Facebook page. Withmore than 900 friends, the chamber posts news about theexpo. Businesses and the public can stay connected to the expoonline.

Sandy Barnett will send an e-blast to participants fromlast year and encourage them to register. A second e-blast willbe sent to other chamber members. The chamber will sendmore information to media outlets and post on the expo’sFacebook page. Mystery shrouds the original truths of the building once knownas Bain Academy.

It is a story of a bachelor, a legendary architect, a church, rebuilding, six generations of students and what one community will doto save its history.

When fire destroyed the original academy in 1903, Mint Hillcitizens united to rebuild.

Now, more than 100 years later, they will do it again.Closed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), the former Bain Academy structure faced demoli-

tion. Mint Hill Commissioner Tina Ross, travel writer and Historic Bain publicity spokesperson, Carol Timblin;Dan Morrill, director of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission; retired art teacher, June Hoodand the Mint Hill community disallowed it.

HistoryThe building, now called “Historic Bain,” is a landmark in Mecklenburg County. The Bain Restoration

Committee, working under the umbrella of the Mint Hill Historical Society, judged its significance to the community, county and school system.

“I had two children who went to school there and three grandchildren,” Timblin said. “I was activein the PTA.”

During a time when many schools still taught in one room, the former Bain Academy hired teachers, who were college graduates. It was one of two graded schools in Mecklenburg County to prepare its studentsfor college. The curriculum included science and the arts. Hood, who also took classes in the building as achild, later taught art to students in the same building.

“It had a very high rate of highly educated teachers in the graded curriculum,” Hood said.It is also the oldest graded school in CMS’ history. In 1889, an 80-year-old bachelor named John Bain founded Bain Academy’s campus on part of 700

acres he inherited, according to Ross. He left it toPhiladelphia Presbyterian Church along with a trustfund to help pay for the school. In the 1920s, thechurch turned it over to the school system. Enoughmoney remained in the trust fund for the school until1935.

“John Bain saw the value of an education, and he wanted the children in this area to have anopportunity for an education,” Ross said. “There areseveral areas around town that reflect his promi-nence.”

In memory of what Bain did for Mint Hill, the oldest male member of Philadelphia Presbyterianstill carries Bain’s cane. After his death, the Bain Trustwas established and it provided $16,240 from 1889to 1935.

After the original school was destroyed byfire, Mint Hill built a new school with the surviving bricks, butmore space was needed.

Throughout Historic Bain’s 124 year history, Mint Hillteachers, students and citizens have seen buildings come and go.Architect Louis Asbury redesigned a new building. With hisdesigns built in Charlotte, he was the first professionally educatedarchitect in NC. According to Timblin, he was also the first architect from NC elected to the American Institute of Architects.

His descendant, Louis Asbury IV, serves on the historicallandmarks commission. He said Asbury built structures, especiallyschools and churches, all over the state. His styles included Tudor,Colonial and Neoclassical Revival.

Besides academic excellence, Asbury put his signaturestyles to work on the two story building. Bain Academy includedan auditorium, gymnasium, library, laboratory, ten classrooms anda bell tower. Timblin said some of the classrooms were for scienceinstruction. Original plans in the 1924 design also included spacefor parking.

“It has very high ceilings in the auditorium,” Ross said.“It’s got tongue-and-groove paneling on the ceilings

underneath the drop ceiling the school system added at some point.”The auditorium and five classrooms remain today.

Damage ControlUntil a few years ago, CMS scheduled demolition of

Asbury’s building because of environmental hazards and structuraldamages caused by age and previous renovations. According toRoss, it is difficult for the Bain Restoration Committee, Mint Hillcommissioners or CMS to put an exact estimate on the renovationof what will become Historic Bain. According to Ross, estimatesfor the total restoration cost have ranged from $60,000 to $1.2million. The cost, she said, is probably somewhere in between.

“We don’t know exactly how much the renovation willcost, and that will be determined in large part by what buildingexperts find once they get in there.”

Estimates of upgrades to the building have been quotedat $250,000.

“The primary problem was that there were structuraldefects,” Chamberlain said. “We had a civil engineer come in,examine it and basically told us we had to make the necessarystructure repairs.”

According to Ross, the school district installed an air conditioning system across some of the beams in the auditorium. The beams couldn't support the heavy weight of the unit, whichcaused the beams to sag and pull apart in places.

“Part of the damage was an air conditioning unit thatwas placed in the structure,” Chamberlain said.

“We had a couple of different engineers look at thebuilding, and we don’t really know exactly what it would take tofix it,” Ross said. “In a best case scenario, it would be easilyreturned to its original integrity with the air conditioning removedand the beams raised and pulled back together.”

Wood around doors and window frames has rotted. Leadpaint – commonly used in the Roaring Twenties – is toxic to children and adults.

“It would be important to have the lead paint removed,”Ross said.

In two classrooms, asbestos is in the flooring material.Previous numbers showed the removal of asbestos could cost$3,500.

Although the Town of Mint Hill is interested in saving thebuilding, funds needed for restoration and the removal of environ-mental hazards is not in the budget. The Historic Bain RestorationCommittee is raising money for a feasibility study. It will determinethe total cost, the historical significance of the building and possibly make Historic Bain eligible for grant money.

Chamberlain and Ross said the partnership between CMSand Mint Hill is a positive one.

“The Mint Hill community has shown enough interestthat we feel we should give them latitude to make the restorationhappen,” Chamberlain stated.

The Mint Hill Historical Society has been granted accessto the building, and Chamberlain said there isn’t an imposed time

limit.

The entrance along Bain School Road has welcomed thousands of

students throughout the years

Mystery of the Missing Bell TowerNo one knows for certain what happened to

the building’s second story. Original plans of BainAcademy show a bell tower and two skylights on theroof. According to Ross, the second story wasremoved in the 1950s.

“The second floor has been removed; probably in the very early fifties,” Ross said. “That’sthe best we can tell. The school system doesn’t havea record as to why that second floor was removed.”

Documents of Historic Bain show thesquare-footage for the first and second floors oneyear. The next year reveals a different square-footage,Ross said. It is the amount of the missing secondfloor.

During the past 20 years, the school districthas spent money on new schools and replacing oldbuildings.

“Most of the really old buildings that goback to that generation don’t exist anymore,”Chamberlain said.

According to Hood, CMS tore the second half off when it built new structures on the school’scampus. “When I went there, the entire structure wasthere,” Hood said. “It would’ve been my dream that allof that would be left as it was. It was a very impressivebuilding with the bell tower.”

“The vestiges of those years are few and farbetween,” Chamberlain said.

Although no one knows for certain what happened to the second floor, Ross visited the CMS

director of building services. She received original designs of Asbury’s 1924design. It showed the bell tower, sky lights, second floor and chalkboarddesigns. Ross said the design would become a guide for the committee andhistorical society to use in its future renovation of Historic Bain.

Saving BainAt one time, Hood said the school was the center of the community.

Traveling theatre groups would arrive in town on a day’s notice and give aperformance that night.

“Bain made my world bigger,” Hood said.“If something important happened in Mint Hill, it happened at Bain

School,” Ross said.Historic Bain Restoration Committee plans to make the building the

center of the community again. Ideally, it would become a cultural center forscience, studios for artists, classes for art lessons and seminars.

To raise money for the feasibility study and restoration, the committee created, “Bain Daze.” At the Park on Fairview, Bain Daze hostedentertainers, contests, food vendors, handcrafters and nonprofits onSeptember 21, 2013. According to Ross and Timblin, the event reflected“old-timey” family festivals once held in the community.

“We had things like horseshoes and cakewalks and children’sgames,” Timblin said. Events also included a mustache and beard competi-tion and a women’s Victorian hat contest.

An account has been set up at Yadkin Bank, and before BAIN DAZEthe Restoration Fund was about $7,000. Donations to the Restoration Fundwill only be used for the actual restoration costs, while the BAIN DAZE fundwill be used for the feasibility study.
