Crete was home to thefirst large-scalecivilization of theAegean Bronze Age.The island's palacesprovide evidence of athriving, relativelypeaceful culture, basedon control of the sea.

Knossos, site of the palace of legendary KingMinos, brings to mind aspects of Greek myth. The maze of rooms and passages justifies itsdescription as a labyrinth. Yet the name itself,

labyrinthos, also means place of the doubleaxes and thus evokes the image of thosecommon cult objects that seem to have hadspecial meaning for Minoans ('-os' endingsindicate a place.)
