GAME DAY TID-BITS Minnesota has won five of its last six games en-

ton. Tubby Smith has coached four games in his ca-

reer at Madison Square Garden, all while at Ken-

tucky. The Wildcats went 1-1 in the 1999 Preseason NIT & 0-2 in the 2000 Coaches vs. Cancer tournament.

Rodney Williams scored 24 points in the quarterfinal round against MTSU. He notched 21 points against Miami &

La Salle and scored 20 against Michigan in Minnesotas loss in the B1G Tournament to become the first Gopher

player to have four straight 20-point efforts since Kris Humphries did it in eight straight games during the 2003-

    04 season.

The Gophers roster includes three players who are averaging double-digits in the teams three NIT games, led by

Williams at 22.0 ppg. Andre Hollins is close behind at 17.0 ppg, and Austin Hollins is averaging 11.3 ppg.

This is the 14th appearance for the Gophers in the National Invitational Tournament. They are 21-11 in non-

vacated NIT games, including the 1993 championship. Minnesota also won the 1998 title but that has since been

vacated. Minnesotas record is 27-12 when the vacated games are included.

The Gophers are one of four teams to have 27 or more wins in the history of the NIT. St. Johns, with a record of 45-

26, has the most wins. Minnesota has now reached the NIT Final Four in five of its 14 NIT appearances.

With the NIT opening-round victory over La Salle, Smith collected his 100th career win at Minnesota. He joins a

list of eight coaches in program history have won 100 or more games. L.J. Cooke (1897-1924) tops the list with250 career wins. Smiths winning percentage at Minnesota is fourth all-time in Gopher annuals.

    games at (612) 625-4389.

MEDIA CREDENTIAL CRITERIADue to severe space limitations for media seating in Williams Arena, media

requesting credentials for Golden Gopher basketball will have to meet cer-

tain criteria to gain access to press seating. The criteria will also determine

where media will be located during games either in press row courtside or

in the upper press row (Row 1 of balcony on north side). Order of priority:

The originating television entity of the game will be seated courtside at

    center court.

Flagship radio for both teams will be seated in the upper level press row.

Any non-originating radio stations doing game updates will be seated

in the upper press row. Student radio stations will be subject to space

restrictions and will only be granted credentials if space allows.

Any national publication will be granted a minimum of one credential

for working press and one photography credential if needed courtside.

The Associated Press and the primary daily newspapers of the Minneapo-

lis/St. Paul market that provide daily coverage for Golden Gopher bas-

exception of the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorderwill be seated on the

radio deck and issue of credentials will be determined by space restric-

tions and the media relations office. The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder

will have one credential in the courtside press row.

If there is no space available on either press row, media can request cre-

dentials and have access during the game to the media work room lo-

cated on the second level of the east addition and postgame interview

    areas.

NOTES FROM THE NIT Minnesota will be making its fifth trip to the NIT Final Four.

The Gophers are 3-1 NIT semifinal games and have won

    two NIT Championships (1993 & 1998).

The Gophers reached the NIT semis by defeating La Salle,

Miami & Middle Tennessee State in their home arenas. It

is the first time since 2008-09 that Minnesota has won

three-straight road games (Colorado State, Iowa & Wis-

    consin).

Minnesota joins UMass as one of only five teams all-time

to reach Madison Square Garden via three road games

since the tourney began using home sites in 1977. The

others are Fresno State (1998), Detroit (2001) & George-

    town (2003).

The Gophers are now 5-2 in NIT quarterfinal games.

Rodney Williams heads to the NIT semifinals having scored

20 or more points in four straight games, including a ca-

reer-high 24 against Middle Tennessee State. He is the

first Gopher to score four-straight 20-point games since

Kris Humphries had eight during the 2003-04 season.

Williams & Andre Hollins are both riding seven-straight

double-figure scoring games. Williams is averaging 22.0

ppg and Hollins 17.0 ppg during NIT play.

SMITH AND THE POSTSEASON Tubby Smiths teams have played in a postseason tourna-

ment in 18 of his 21 seasons as a collegiate head coach

    - four in five years at Minnesota, two in four years at Tulsa,

both seasons at Georgia and all 10 seasons at Kentucky.

Smith has won at least two games in a postseason tour-

nament 10 times and has only lost in the opening round

    four times.

Smith is 32-16 (.667) in postseason play as a head coach

    (NCAA/NIT games).

Smiths teams have reached five NCAA Sweet 16s, three

Elite Eights and the 1998 NCAA Championship.

Smith won his first postseason game at Minnesota in the

opening round against La Salle. His record is now 3-3 in

postseason games at Minnesota, 3-1 in the NIT.

The Gophers quarterfinal round win over Middle Tennessee

State secured at least three postseason tournament wins

for the first time since the 2003 team made it to the NIT

    Final Four.

HOMECOMING FOR THE HOLLINS The NIT quarterfinal matchup between Minnesota & Middle

Tennessee State meant a pair of Gopher guards came

    home.

Sophomore Austin Hollins & freshman Andre Hollins, both

starters, will be making their collegiate debut in their

    homestate of Tennessee.

The win over Middle Tennessee was the 12 game played

for Dre Hollins at the Murphy Center. The Tennessee State

High School Championships are played there.

Both players, although not related, grew up in the Mem-

phis area. Austin starred at Germantown High School &

Dre was a four-year starter and is the reigning Tennessee

Player of the Year from White Station High School.

SMITH COLLECTS 100TH WIN AT MINNESOTA Tubby Smith led the Gophers to a victory over La Salle in

the first round of the NIT Tournament, giving him 100 ca-

reer wins in Gold Country. He is 102-67 overall at Min-

    nesota.

Smith is now one of eight coaches to reach the 100-win

plateau at the University of Minnesota.

Smith reached the century mark faster than any other

    coach in program history.

Smiths winning percentage of .604 is the fourth highest

in the history of the program.

    nent

GOPHERS TRUE FRESHMEN Andre Hollins started the rst 10 games of the season be-

fore suffering a sprained ankle. He has started 19 games

    overall, including the last eight.

The Gophers are 14-5 with Hollins in the starting lineup.

the midst of a free throw streak He made his rst two at-

tempts to bring the streak to 25 straight but missed his

    next attempt.

Welchs streak of 25-straight was the longest Gopher free

throw streak since Lawrence Westbrook hit 31 straight

    from the charity stripe.

the season but the other senior co-captain, Ralph Samp-

son III, will finish his Minnesota career as one of the best

    big men in program history.

Sampson III went over the 1,000 point mark on Feb. 28

against Wisconsin, the 37th player in program history to

amass 1,000 career points. He currently sits in 34th place

DRE HOLLINS NAMED TO ALL-B1G TOURNEY TEAM Freshman Andre Hollins was named to the All-Big Ten

Tournament Team following a stellar showing in Indi-

    anapolis.

    Hollins averaged 23.0 points, 4.5 rebounds & 3.0 as-

    sists during the tournament.

Hollins scored a career-high 25 points in the win over

Northwestern and followed that up with 21 against

    Michigan.

Hollins is the second Gopher player in three seasons to

Joining Hollins on the team were MSU players Draymond

Green (Most Outstanding Player) & Brandon Wood and

OSUs Jared Sullinger & Deshaun Thomas.

GOPHERS BENCH MAKING AN IMPACT Tubby Smith has always utilized his entire roster. This

    year is no exception.

Minnesota has 11 players that are averaging at least

    11 minutes per game.

Armelin played a career-high 30 minutes in the regular

season finale against Nebraska and led the team with

a career-high 20 points to go with seven rebounds.

Dre Hollins scored a then career-high 20 points off the

    bench against Wisconsin.

The Gophers bench outscored Nebraska 40-7 in Lin-

coln, led by Armelins then career-high 15 points.

Minnesota defeated Illinois at Williams Arena on Jan.

28 behind 39 points from the bench, again led by

Armelin who contributed 14 points and a career-high

    seven rebounds.

The Gophers are 17-7 this season and 82-42 under

Smith when the bench outscores the oppositions

    bench.

A HUGE WIN FOR THE PROGRAM The Gophers were able to secure their rst conference

win of the season with a 77-74 victory over #7/8 ranked

Indiana in Bloomington on Jan. 12.

It was the rst loss of the season for the Hoosiers at

    Assembly Hall.

Minnesota had lost its last 43 road games against

    ranked teams, including vacated games.

Not including vacated games, that number extends to

63 straight losses on the road against ranked oppo-

    nents.

It is the rst time the Golden Gopher program has beat

a Top 10 team on the road while unranked since de-

feating #9 Iowa during the 1981 conference season.

The victory over #7 Indiana is the highest ranked op-

ponent Minnesota has defeated in a true road game

since a 1976 win at No. 6 Marquette (that game was

    later forfeited).

The victory is the highest ranked Big Ten opponent Min-

nesota has EVER defeated on the road. The previous

high was #8 Illinois in 1954.

GOPHERS AGAINST TOP 10 TEAMS With the win earlier this season over Indiana - ranked

7th at the time, Tubby Smith secured his sixth victory

over top-10 ranked teams in his four-plus seasons at

Minnesota. Smith has a total of 31 career victories over

    top-10 teams.

Prior to Smiths arrival, the Gophers hadnt defeated a

top 10 team since February 9, 2000 when Minnesota

    beat No. 9 Indiana 77-75.

The win over No. 8 Purdue on Jan. 13, 2011 at Williams

arena was Minnesotas fth victory over a top 10

    ranked team under Smith.

The Gophers defeated No. 8 North Carolina in the sec-

ond round of the 2010 Puerto rico Tip-Off on Nov. 19.

The Gophers beat No. 6 Purdue and No. 10 Butler dur-

ing the 2009-10 season and No. 9 Louisville during the

    2008-9 season.

PICKING UP THE SLACK Minnesota has played all but seven games this season

without its senior forward Trevor Mbakwe, a Preseason

All-American, following a knee injury. He was averaging

    a team-high 14.0 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.

Rodney Williams has contributed averages of 13.1

    points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, 1.3 steals and 33.3

minutes per game since Mbakwes injury, all team

    highs.

Junior Julian Welch made his rst start as a Gopher

against Virginia Tech and led the team with 15 points

and four assists. He is averaging 10.5 ppg and a team-

high 3.1 assists per game since the Mbakwe injury.

Welch is shooting .477 (41-86) from the three-point

line over that time. Overall, Welch is shooting .450 (45-

    100) from behind the arc, tops on the team.

Freshman Elliott Eliason has started nine games thus

far in place of senior Ralph Sampson III. He has aver-

aged 4.1 points & 5.9 rebounds in those games, in-

    cluding a career-high 10 rebounds against

Northwestern in the rst round of the Big Ten Tourna-

ment. He followed that up with nine boards in the sec-

    ond round against Michigan.

REVAMPED ROSTER The Gophers have played this season without six play-

ers from last season that combined to play in nearly

500 career NCAA basketball games, led by Blake Hof-

farber who played a Gopher record 132 career games.

Tubby Smith has played seven players that came into

the season with zero games played in a Minnesota uni-

form - three true freshmen, a pair of redshirt freshmen

    and two junior college transfers.

Two of the true freshman, Joe Coleman & Andre Hollins,

and a redshirt freshman, Elliott Eliason, have started

the last three games for Smihs club.

In all, the three aforementioned players have combined

to make 46 starts this season.

WINS DURING THE NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE The Gophers nished the 2011 non-conference sched-

ule with a record of 12-1, tying the most non-confer-

ence wins by the Gophers in the Tubby Smith era. The

Gophers also won 12 games during the 2008 non-con-

    ference slate

Minnesota played 13 non-conference games for the

    rst time under Tubby Smith.

This was only the fourth time since the 1980-81 season

that a Gopher team scheduled 13 games during the

no-conference slate (not counting vacated years).

Minnesota has nished the non-conference schedule

10 times since 1980-81 with one or fewer losses (not

    counting vacated years).

Three of the 10 times have occurred during the Tubby

    Smith regime.

Tubby Smith holds a record of 54-7 during the non-con-

ference schedule since arriving in Gold Country.

SEASON RECORDS IN TUBBY SMITH ERAMinnesota recorded 298 steals in 2007-08, which broke

the team record of 292 that was set in 2004-05. Al Nolen

finished fifth in season steals all-time with 64. His 32

steals in conference play tied him with Quincy Lewis for

seventh all-time. Damian Johnson had 34 thefts in con-

ference action, which ranks sixth all-time. His total of

59 for the season ranks eighth all-time.

The Gophers also dished out 515 assists in 2007-08,

which ranks fourth all-time in school history. The record

of 558 was set in 1989-90. Nolen tied for ninth all-time

(1991-92) with 68 assists in Big Ten play.

In 2008-09, the Gophers blocked 201 shots to break the

single season record of 196 set by the 2002-03 club. The

199 blocks by the 2009-10 team is second all-time while

the 169 blocks last season is fourth all-time.

Minnesotas 2011-12 block total now stands at 170, cur-

rently the fourth-most in program history. The Gophers

led the Big Ten Conference in blocks for the fourth con-

    secutive season.

COLEMAN PICKS UP FIRST CONFERENCE AWARDJoe Coleman was named the Big Ten Conference Fresh-

man of the Week on Jan. 16 after helping the Gophers se-

cure a pair of Big Ten road victories, at No. 7 Indiana and

at Penn State. The victories marks the rst t ime since the

2009 conference season that Minnesota has won back-

    to-back conference road games.

Coleman averaged 15.5 points and 4.0 rebounds on the

week. He scored a career-high 23 points in the win over

Penn State that included a 13-of-14 effort from the free

minute, to help the Gophers defeat No. 7 Indiana in

    Bloomington.

GOPHERS SIGN BUGGS & ELLENSON TO NLIS
