Bluebill Project Program cont.

Volume 3 , Issue 8 Page 4

Eye placement was the subject of Tom Flemming’s continuing saga of the Greater Scaup decoy . Using a

scaup study bill for accuracy, Tom penciled in the exact location with his calipers. The perimeter of the

10mm glass eye was marked (2,3). Using a diamond cylinder in his high speed drill Tom opened the hole for

the glass eye to set in (4,5,6). After checking to be sure the eyes were just the way he wanted them, Tom

mixed some Apoxie Sculpt which is a two-part modeling compound that is very user friendly. Filling the eye

cavities with the clay, the glass eyes are then pressed into the head (7). The clay is then smoothed into the

surrounding area (8,9). The final shaping of the eye is done with a rubber tipped pencil (11,12).

2012 Federal Duck Stamp Competition

For an amazing tenth time this prestigious competition was won by a member of the famous

Minnesota Hautman family. First place - Wood Duck painted by Joseph Hautman who has

now won his fourth title. Second place - Gadwall. Third place - Mallard pair
