Policy DirectionsNSW 2021, recognises that arts and culture play an invaluable role in

strengthening communities.

The Government’s goal is to increase participation in arts and cultural

activities by 10%.

Particular attention is also given to:

participation in rural and regional NSW

major international events

opportunities for participation in Aboriginal, multicultural and

community activities and events

The NSW Arts and Cultural Sector 53.4% of Australia’s theatre revenue was generated in NSW

2 million attendances at contemporary music events

540 museums and 175 historical societies in NSW

37.5% of attendance at dance events in Australia were in NSW

46% of the NSW population borrowed a library book

NSW is home to three of the country’s largest and most prestigious

festivals: Biennale of Sydney, Sydney Writers’ Festival and Sydney

Festival

Private support for the arts in NSW - $33.3M from the corporate sector

and $49.3M from private philanthropy

Arts and Cultural Policy

In 2013, the NSW Government will produce its first Arts

and Cultural Policy. It will outline a vision and direction for

the sector in NSW for the next ten years

As a part of this work, Arts NSW will review the Arts

Funding Program

There will be community consultation for both the Policy

and Review in the coming months

Communications will primarily be through the Arts NSW

website and E-news

Arts NSWArts NSW is the NSW Government’s arts policy and

funding body

Role of Arts NSW:

Promote arts and culture

Provide advice to the sector and government

Deliver the Arts Funding Program

Deliver the Infrastructure Support Program

Work with the State’s Cultural Institutions

The Arts Funding Program (AFP)

The Arts Funding Program seeks to promote:

A creative and diverse NSW arts and cultural sector

Audience development and participation in NSW

Improved business capacity and governance

Arts Funding Program (AFP)

The 2011-12 Arts Funding Program provided over $58M

in funding to:

300 arts and cultural organisations and 45

individuals

511 programs and projects across NSW

Over $11M to support regional activity

$3.4M to support activity in Western Sydney

Organisations delivering Devolved Funding Programs on

behalf of Arts NSW

Devolved Funding

Some funds under the Arts Funding Program are devolved

to partner organisations though the negotiated category to

support arts and cultural activities at the local and regional

level

Guidelines, eligibility, closing dates, application forms and

application and assessment processes vary

Applications for devolved funds must be made directly to

the relevant partner organisation

Organisations in receipt of funding that expires in 2013 will

be provided with an additional years funding for 2014 at

current levels

Other multi-year contracts will remain in place

Organisations in receipt of Multi-year Funding are not

eligible to apply for New Projects

Professional Development and Awards

Fellowships

Arts NSW’s program of fellowships is currently under

review. The Review and the program have not yet been

finalised. Public comments received are under

consideration.

Awards

The NSW State Library manages the Premier’s Literary

Awards and the Premier’s History Awards on behalf of Arts

NSW. Go to www.sl.nsw.gov.au for further information.

Information for Applicants

Eligibility

Organisations must be legally constituted and:

A not-for-profit incorporated body

A cooperative or trust

A local government authority

Applications can be made by a group of organisations or

artists working together

Individuals may also apply to certain categories. In some

instances they will need to be auspiced by an eligible

legally constituted organisation

Application Limits

If eligible:

Sydney or Western Sydney - up to three applications

Regional Conservatoriums – up to three applications

Other Regional - up to four applications

Auspiced applications and application to Artist Support,

Fellowships, Awards and devolved funding programs will

be accepted in addition to the above limits

Separate criteria apply for Artist Support, Regional Capital

and Regional Partnerships funding

The AFP is extremely competitive, meeting the criteria does

not guarantee funding

panel consisting of independent peers with appropriate

industry expertise

Negotiated and Strategic Funding is assessed and

allocated via a separate process

Panel members for 2014 will be sourced from the Arts

NSW peer register

Applications are not assessed by art form

Submitting an applicationApplications are made through the Arts NSW online

application system https://apply.arts.nsw.gov.au, with the

exception of Aboriginal Quick Response

First time applicants will need to create an account. It’s a

a very simple process

Forms will be available online approximately six weeks

prior to the closing date. There is a separate form for each

type of funding

Online applications close at Midnight (AEST) on the

specified closing date

Submitting an application

Delivery Plans will be a key part of many of your

applications

Support material needs to be recent and relevant

Contact Arts NSW for assistance anytime from 9am to 5pm

(Sydney time) Monday to Friday

Role of Arts NSW staffArts NSW staff are available to provide advice to potential

applicants on:

interpreting the Arts Funding Program Guidelines

the types of activities relevant to each funding category

using the online application system

Arts NSW staff will be available to assist Assessment

Panels and will provide advice on the funding history of

applicants and arts sector issues

Senior members of the Department may sit on assessment

panels from time to time

Application TipsGive as much relevant detail as possible in the space provided

Never assume an assessment panel knows you or your work

Provide recent and relevant support material

Provide realistic and measurable KPIs

Always use plain English

Test the online application form before you start and save as

you go

Check the closing date

Budget Tips

Ensure your budget is correct, balanced and reflects the

activity

Ensure your budget is realistic

Show all funding from any other sources – including in-kind

Payment of fees and salaries to artists and employees

should be consistent with industry standards

Budgets should be commensurate with the type and scale

of the program

Give as much detail as possible – don’t use ‘other’ as a

descriptor

Provide explanatory notes to the budget

Arts NSW does not provide 100% funding
