BALLARAT MINING DISTRICT.

CENTRAL DIVISION .

.lib,. David Christy, Mining Registrar.

Quartz" mllllllg operations in this division still continue to attract attention, and give evidence of their value and stabilit,y, as shown in the annexed tabulated returns.

The mine of the Old Post Office Company, situated at Goldel! Point, will be started again in a few weeks, after having rema-incd unworked for several years. The present proprietor has commenced the erection of a substantial plant, and sanguine hopes are entertained of the success of the undertaking.

The late New Welcome Q. "1\1. Company, at Dca-d-horse Ranges, have reorganised under a new proprietory, called the" Nerrilla," and are at present eU):iaged sinking the main shaft to a deeper level.

At Mount Clear (vVhHe Horse Itanges) several co-operative parties are crushing stone which yields from 10 dwts. to 2ozs. per ton, but their returns apnear only under the head of" public crnshings."

The machinery connected with the late St, George and Band of Hope Company has beeu sold by order of the mortgagee, and removed to Spring Hill, near Crcswick, .A company recently formed have already made arrangements for the ereetion of a complete mining plant for the purpose of further exploring the ami(crous reef-wash known to exist in an easterly direction on the Old Golden Point I,ead. Good progress has been ma'de by the City of Ballarat Company. * GOLD Ol3TAINED FBO~t 'filE PRINCIPAl, lhLUVIAL MINES IN THE CENTRAL MINING DISTRICT DURING THE QUARTER

QUARTZ iVhNING.

The j·eturns show a marked improvement in the yield of quartz gold in this division during the present quarter. The improvement is attributable to the greater qUtwtity of quartz crushed and the general good average yield per ton obtained fl'om the mines at Kangaroo. 'I'his part of the ,division is rising in importance, and steps are being taken to have it proclaimed a township.

Staffordshire Reef.-The Hopewell Company completed the cr,ection of their 16-hcad battery on the 8th of October, since which date they, have been crushing very poor stonE'; but as good prospects were obtained towards the end of the quarter, better results are antiCipated_ '

The Hopewell Tribute Company have not been crushing for the past month, and, unfortunately, will not be able to resume. crushing operations fol' some time to come, owing to their crushing pb,t having been totally destroyed by fire on the 16th. December. '11he cause of the fire is unkno\vn.

'rhe Speedwell Tribute Company's yields fell off tow;u'ds the end of the qual"t~r, and i~ COllS!3l).ueJ!.oo they are making preparations to opeu 01fta~ .~ ,deeper level, expecting to s1;rike better stone.

Kangaroo.-The New Kangaroo Company have got their mine in good working order, with a sufficient quantity of payahle quartz in view to keep the whole of their battery (16 heads) constantly going for some time to come. Up to the present they have only been using six heads-ten heads having been engaged for public erushings.

The New '1'ry Again (Jompany have had 183 tons of stone reduced at the New Kangaroo Uompany's battery, from which they obtained 400zs. H dwts. 6 grs. of gold. They have a quantity of stone at grass, but are unable to get it crushed as heretofore, and unless they erect a battery for themselves it is impossible to say when they will have another crushing. . '

The Nil Desperandum Company ha,e connected their two levels, proviiig 50 feet in depth of payable stone, averaging7 feet wide. The battery is kept constantly going.

The William's Fancy Company, during the quarter, obtained 2500zs. 18 dwts. 18 grs. of gold from 1,003 tons of stone. '1'he depth of the 8haft is 103 feet, and the lode is from 6 to 7 feet wide.

The After Dark Company,' situated to the north of n.nd adjoining the vVilliam's Fancy Company, have had a trial crushing of 118 tons of stone, from which they obtained 10 ozs. 6 dwts. 19 grs. of gold. This crushing was taken from the cap of the lode, where it was very wide and much broken up. They intend sinking deeper, when no doubt better stone will be met with.

Three other pn.rties are prospecting on the same line of reef, with varied results.

ALLUVIAl, MINING.

The most importn.nt event in connection with this class of !Lining during the qnarter has been the finding of a nugget hy Turner and party, ill Elder's plivate property, llreak-o'-Day. Its gross weight was 1750zs., alJd when broken up yielded 162 ozs, pure gold. Prior to the breaking up of the nugget I took a cast, which I have forwarded' to the department. It was found at a depth of 29 feet, in groulJd that had been abandoned for years in consequence of the poor nature of the wash, producing as low as 7 dwts. to the machine They are now ona good run of gold, but do not expect it will last long, as it is believed to be only a brea.k off from the old lead.

Pitfield Plains.-The Doughboy Company are getting excellent returns. The Nil Desperandum Company have erected two lO-inch cylinder engines-one for windin'g and the other

for pumping. The shaft is sunk to the depth of 91 feet, and a contract is let for sinking 50 feet further at £2 158. per foot. Should this venture prove successful, a great impetus will be given to mining in that locality.

Water is very scarce throughout the division.

BUNINYONG DIVISION.

Mr. R~bert M. Harvey, Jfining Surveyor and Registrar.

AI,LUVIAL.

No change has taken place during the quarter; the total yield is less, owing to the great scarcity of water.

, QUARTZ. This branch of mining has continued to improve during the quarter. .A new battery of 15 heads of stampers

has been erected by the Llewellyn Company at Magpie, but owing to a want of water crushing has not been carried on. Good stone has, however, been struck, and is being paddocked. , At tbe Homeward-bound, Scotchman's, a pnmping and winding plant is again to be ereeted, and quartz

below the water-level will shortly be raised. No new reef has been struck during the quarter, though prospecting is being carried on to a cOllsiderable

extent. The amount of money received by the Borough Council of Buninyong for wawr from the Government reservoir

during the quarter has been £2 3s. 6d,," and the quantity of water used is estimated at 7,000,000 gallons.

SMYTHESDALE DIVISION.

1711'. John Lynch, :Mining SU1'veyor and Registrar.

. The yield of gold from aU'sources has been 10,359 ozs. 5 dwts., being an increase of 983t ozs. upon that of the IJreviOUB quarter. This is chiefly owing to the improved condition of the alluvial mines at Haddon. The returns from Linton and Happy Valley are pretty well maintained, but with these exceptions there is very little of an

, encouraging nature to report. A little. patch ?f alluvial was foun~ about two months ago with!n the townshiJ? of S~ythesdale, but it was

shown to be limited III extent and poor 10 character. Along the mam trunk lead from Plggoreet to Cape Clear mining is extinct-the Grand Trunk mine, one of the oldest on the lead, having had to cease operations a few months ago.

, In quartz mining there is a little doing, and, as far as the prospects obtained are considered, they are of an encouraging character.

'1'he total want of water for sluicing purposes has prevented any work being done in connection with this branch of mining for the last two years.

There is a derrease in the yield both of alluvial and quartz gold, compared with the previous quarter. In alluvial the decrease is principally, caused by Bunyan's Freehold having been worked out, and the temporary

stoppage from washing by the Australasian Company, owing to the company sinking a new shaft, so as to get the work carried on more economically.

In quartz the decl'ease is partly owiug to!1 ~Illaller quantity of quartz being crushed, but principally to a. decrease of about 12 grs. pel' ton in the average yield. Egertoll.-B1ack.horse United Compauy.-l'he work carried 011 by this company during the past quarter has been chiefly of an opening-up character, though the stone raised has been almost sufficient to keep the battery in full work. The drive connecting the No. 8 ~evel of the No.1 shaft with the No.7 level of the No. 2 shaft, and termed the" Intermediate," has been extended south, and connected with the winze from the No.7 level. This drive has been permanently timbered, and stoping commenced in it, the stone being of a good payable quality. The No.8 level has also been driven south, as it is intended in time to connect this drive with the No.7 level by the winze mentioned above, for the purpose of conveying mullock for filling up and otherwise working the lode. On the west side of this level a run of stone c!UTyillg good gold has been cut. 'fhis is supposed to be the same as that got in the No.7 level; the stone, however, contains a greater amount of mineral, and is darker, the result, probably, of greater depth. During the quarter 4,232 tons of qual'tz have been crushed, yielding 1,9980zs. 19 dwts. of gold, or an average of 9 dwts. 10'724 grs. to the tOll, and dividends amounting to £3,600 paid. The average number of men employed is 78.

The Egerton Company, during th!'l quarter, have been raising stone from their" No. I Rose," "No.2 Rose," and "Quarry" shafts, at a depth of from 600 to BOO feet. Tailing pumps, und machinery connected therewith, have also been erected at the battery. The average number of men employed is 176.

South Learmonth and Egerton Amalgamated Company.-This company have been vigorously prospecting their ground at the 50D-foot level during the quarter, but as yet have not met with anything of a payable nature. The average number of men employed is 18.

No work has been done by the Argyle and North Argyle companies during the quarter. The Chinese company of 12 men, registered as Ah Jack and Co., are still washing the tailings from the Egerton

Company's battery, and have obtained on an average 3 OllS. per week, or a total of 39 ozs. for the quarter. The Chinese party washing the tailings at the Black-horse United Company's battery have ceased operations.

They only worked the first month of the quarter, during which time they obtained but about 40zs. of gold. Rose and Shamrock Company:-Dm'ing the quarter this comp/tny have been sinking their shaft, which is now

a depth of 110 feet. 'fhey opened out at 100 feet, and are now driving ill search of the lode. The average number of men employed is 10.

The IS orth HIack.horse Company, which hold lease No. 1083, situated to the north and west of the Blackhorse United Com!lany's lease, are engaged in erecting a winding engine of 20-horse power for the purpose of working their ground from all old shaft sunk several years ago. It is expected that everything will be completed about the middle of January, when mining operations will be at once commenced. The number of men employed is 8.

Gordon.-Parker's IT oited Company.-During the quarter this company have been engaged in raising aod crush, ing stone from their 440 and 51O-foot levels; 900 tons were crushed, which yielded 265 ozs. of gold. The width of the lode at both levels varies from 2~ to 3 feet, and yields an average of 5 dwts. 2H grs. to the ton, which is not considered a payable yield; but should the lode widen out to w hat it has been in several places the returus would be payable. The 44O-foot level is now being driven south to strike a shoot of stone formerly worked at the 260.foot level. It is the intention of the company to sink their north shaft deeper. The average number of men employed is 50.

United Miners Company.-During the first two months of the quarter this company were engaged in raising atone at a depth of from 50 to 70 feet, and ill connecting the workings at the present or main shaft with those of the old shaft, for ventiiatioJ;!. Sixty-five tons of the stone raised were crushed, which only yielded 5 OZ9. 13 dwts.18 ,,-8., or an' average of It dwts. to the ton. In consequence of this small yield'no more of the stone raised was crushed, and operations ceased. 'fhe number of men employed was 6.

The want of water is lIOW greatly felt all through this subdivision, and but -for its scarcity there is no doubt that much more stone would have been crushed during the quarter. '

About two months ago an attempt was made by the millers at Elaine to induce the Government to take the works of the late Lal Lal Association in hand, with a view to supplying that plaee with water, and the prospect thereby held out caused an improvement in the appearance of, mining matters for the time. Nothing 'more appears to have been done in the matter, and consequelltly there is great depression cxisting at the present time. '

'l'he several companies at Simmollsl Reef crushing with water-power h!lve been. very, successful during the season, more especially the Cornish Company (consisting of four co-operative shareholders), who shared the handsome return of 365 ozs. of gold; and as the working expenses are merely nominal, the dividends must have been considerahly large. Mr. Rogers, owner of the Big Hill Company's mine, also cleared several hundred pounds sterling over and above working expeuses on a small average yield of less than 3 dwts. of /!,old to the ton of quartz crushed.

At Barry's Reef the Sultan Company's returns show the average yield of gold per ton to be It dwt. less as against that of thc' previous quarter. The nnmber of miners employed by the same company in this quarter has beeu about 40 less, consequently the quantity of quartz mised is less by several hundred tOIlS. . 'rhe total yield of-gold has

I fallen off in comparison, but, this; however, has not affected the total return fOl' the division, inasmuch as the good yields from Simmons' Reef haye brought the total yield of gold from quartz up to within a few oUllces of that of the previous quarter.

At Blakeville, Garibaldi, and Wri,ght's Reef the claims are all at. a standstill, and nothing of importance to report has occurred in any other part of this division.

ALWVIAL MINING.

A marked improvement in the total yicld of gold hlistaken place in this branch of mining-an increase of over 4000zs. above that of the previous qual'ter has been o.btained. The average earnings per man are very small; a 'few parties. however, have been very fortunate of late, the earnings of one party baving been from £5 to over £20 per man per week.

BEECHWOR TH MINING, DIS';rRIC,T.

BEECH WORTH DIVISION. 11lr. Alexander Alde1'dice, 1I1ining Registrar.

The past quarter has been the driest experienced ill this division since the opening of the Ovens goldfields, lLnd creeks which usually run all the year round are literally dried up. If it were possible to run all 'the available water at present in this division into one race it would not be sufficient to keep one claim at full work. The sluicers have consequently had a very bad season, and unless rain'sets in e;trlier and heavier than usual a. considerable portion of the coming year will also be bad for them.

'rhe drought has also affected quartz mining injuriously. There are three crushing-mills idle at Stony Creek, there not being suffh;ient water to wet the t!,hles; and the same may be said in' regard to the Wallaby. Mill, at H mdlc Flat. '

At Eldorado the three ,deep claims are at work, although only oue, the United Eldorado Company, is producing gold in quantities. This com'panyobtained dnrinp; the quarter 921 OllS. 18 dwts. of gold" and 16 tons 15 cwt. of black s;md. 'I'heir workings are altogether on the south side or tli'e creek and under the township, some of the best was, hdirt being fouud there. The vV cllington Cornpauy have been putting in a prospecting drive to the south, going up close to the old shaft of the South Wellington Company, but they have not yet been rewarded with anything payable. The OvellS Gold and Tin Company continue to put ill opening drives, and the washdirt passed.through appears to be of good quality. During tQ.e quarter the company o):>taiu8d 1670zs. of gold and about 2 toils 15 ·(l\vt. of black sand.

At the Buckland Gap lead two of the 'claims have liad a washillg-up, which paid fair wages. 1'he dirt averages about 5 dwts,. to the load, but it is pretty ha!"d to obtain,

At Stony Creek a short lead has been struck on the flat behind Hardisty's house. There are several floors of washdirt, the deepest being 170 feet, and wet. The prospectors are working the upper, or 90-foot floor, as that appears to he the hest .. No washing has yet heen done.

It would have been supposed that as the season was so dry more attention would have been given to quartz reefing in this division, but it has not been 80, from what cause does not appear. 'l'here is a large number of reefs, which; if economically worked, would gh'e fair wages to industrious men; and as there is an abundance of crushing power lying idle the price for quartz-crushing ought to be nominal only. An instance in point has occurred during the past qW11'ter: The :Messrs. Paul Brothers took up an old adalldoned reef at Buffalo Ureek, called the United, and got out about 220 tons of stone, which, on being crushed at Hart's mill, yielded 55 ozs., or 5 dwts. per ton. This gave them very good wages for the time they had worked, after paying 5s. per ton for crushing and 28. 6d. pel' ton for carting. There ,He many more reefs in this division w hieh would p<ly even hetter than this has done if properly ~~ .

The Chiltern Valley Comp~y have now agreed to put !10WIl £10,000 more additional capital, ,alld ar~ ,bJlsy sinking, new, shafts i,11 a more, secure part of their claim. 1'he Caledonian and Durham still remain idle, without auy prospect of their reopening.' The excessive drought tells heavi,ly, against 'alluvial mining operations. . '

A great deal of attention is being paid to quartz, though as yet no very great work has been done. From th_1! high average percentage of gold. obtained, it is, howe,er, very evident mining in quartz in this division is very remunerative. .

There is nothing further particular to report, unless it be the finding of gold in a sandstone which has evidently formed a portion of a lode. The stone was in the form of water-worn nodules, and had formed part of the rubbish thrown out of the washdirt ohtained from the Indigo Lead. The prospect ran about 1 oz. to the ton, and some 6 tons of it were crushed. '

There was no water sold during the quarter.

WANDILIGONG SUBDIVISION. 1111'. T. C. Kaigltin, il1ining Registrar.

The extreme dryness of the present season has brought the whole of the alluvial mines in this division to a standstill, as well as some 'of bhe quartz mills, which will now have to remain idle until the autumn rains set in. During the quarter a number of prospectors have been out on the ranges at the head of Morse's Oreek testing comparatively new country, as very little prospecting, has been done there in the past, and several have already been successful in discovering new reefs. These, though looking well in most instances, have not been sufIiciently tried at present to war milt anything being said about their value.

The handsome yields obtained by Orchard and Co. from their sluicing claim on the ahandoned ground in Growler's Creek have induced others to occupy groUlld of l1 similar nature in Morse's Creek, but the scarcity of water for sluicing, has compelled a suspension of operations.

BUCKLAND DIVISION. Mr. Lewis C. Kinchela, Mining Registrar.

The mining statistics for this quarter show that-contrary to my previously expressed anticipations-thc yield of gold for this district still keeps up to the usual average, although there is now only one quartz claim which employs labor to any extent.

Several of the Chinese who left mining for tobacco.growing have resumed their former occupation. All our working population seem to be fully employed at remunerative wages. The quantity of water sold during the quarter was as follows :-Bright district, five heads, at lOs. per head.

ALEXANDRA SUBDIVISION. Mr. Robert S. Greig, .fllining Surveyor and Regist1·ar.

ALLUVIAl, MINING.

The Revival Company, Godfrey'S Creek, have been completing their ammgements for proculing machinery, the ground being held meanwhile under a suspension certificate. The machinery has not yet been placed on the ground, but I am informed that the purchase has been effected, and that it will shortly he erected.

Nothing else of importance has occurred in this class of ruining during the qnarter. QUAltTZ MINING.

The Just in Time Company, gobur, have cut the reef at ~ depth of about 100 feet, They are now opening oul" and anticipate raising crushing material during the coming quarter.

A company has'been formed to work the leases on the Lucky line of reef, referred to in my report of last quarter. The shareholders purpose commencing operations forthwith.

No fresh discoveries have been made during the fJuarter, No water has heen sold during the quarter.

DRY CREEK SUBDIVISION. 1111'. Jonathan Pemberton, 11Iining Hegi8trU1·.

Since my last report Mr. R. G. Meades' macbinery has been completed; it consists of two batteries of five stamper'> each. driven by a water-wheel 30 feet in diameter. Several miles of races have been cut to convey the VI'ater to the machine, at the cost of £1,500, nnd it is expected to be at work in a day or two. 'l'wo more leases have been applied for.

GAFFNEY'S CREEK SUBDIVISION. Mr. A. B. Ainsworth, Mining Surveyor and Registml'.

A marked improvement shows in this subdivision in the quarter's yields, which would have been striking indeed if two crushings now proceeding, and from which some 600ozs. may be expected, had been includcd. The crushings referred to are those of the AI, expected to return over 600 OZS., and of the Goldeu Belt. Tho anxiety to use all water available to the last moment. keeps these yields out of this qnarter's returns, to which they properly belong.

The Wallaby tributers have at length excellent prospects, and the yield giveu is highly remunerative. The Great Eastern mine has also improved upon the usual returns. 'fhe energy and perseverance characteristic

of the mineT's in this subdivision promise to place it ill the premier position of the district, notwithstanding that no new discoveries have been made. The Al mine is especially remarkable for the character of its stone, which lately has yielded gold in substantial-lumps, not put through the battery.

In alluvial I have nothing uew to report, and no water has been sold ill the subdivision, nor are any miners employed save in the extraction of gold.

WOOD'S POINT SUBDIVISION. 1ff".. A. B. Ainsworth, Mining Surveyor and Registra~.

Mr. John Stackpoole and party, whose original mode of working the surfaee deposits of our richer dykes has been previouSly described, continue to obtain excelleut results from their tribute of the Morning Star Prospectir.g Claim. Mr. Staekpoole's example has been followed by the Mountaineer Company, Black River. and although-the circumstances not being so favorable to the application of this method-the same results cannot be expected, payable yields have already be~n obtained.

'fhe other companies on the Morning Star reefs are not now raising stone, pending the prosecution of the tunnel now being driven into the Wood's Point ground and reefs by the United G. M. Co., as tributers of the larger part of the hill. The country has been extremely hard to penetrate, though improving lately, and the manager anticipates, I uuderstand, reaching the vein he is presently seltT'ching for in about 15 feet.

The All Nations Company are idle; and the Prince of Wales tributers have had one highly satisfactory crushing for the quarter.

'fhe prospect,s of the Sycamore Reef are improving, and a promise of permanent results is apparent in their workings.

The Lady Franklin Company are busy ere cLing their new battery; and the Sir John Franklin tribute party propose following suit. The latter company are obtaining payahle dirt.

The Leviathan Extended Company have a halance of rich stone to grass, but wat~r being ,scarce, and their leader requiring furLher prcspeeting, they are driving further into the hill, with very favorable indications of another make of rich stone.

Messrs. Welsh and Axton. adapting their mode of working to' the example set them by Messrs. Stack poole and party, have obtained most promising ground south-west of the latter. and are busy huilding a ii-head battery on their ground. There is nothing new to report in alluvial sluicing. No water has been sold in this subdivisi?ll.

BIG RIVER SUBDIVISION . .Mr. A. B. AinsUJorth, 11fining Surveyor and Registrar.

The only three quartz mines working during the last few years il,l this subdivision have been at work during the past quarter, and the yields, without being good, may be termed payable, The Unknown Company left off'work in December; but the other two eompanies are likely to continuo operations during the summer months.

. There is nothing whatever of all interesting character to report anent these operations. The alluvial miners have averaged about 20s. to 21s. per month; and no water has, so far as I have heard,

b~en sold. When disposed of the price ranges from 48. 6d. per sluice-head per week downwards.

MITTA MITTA NORTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. Jolt'll C. Forster, .iJ1inillg Registrar.

There has been no improvement in gold mining during the quarter. Copper mining is causing great excitement, over 100 men being employed raising copper ore. A number of claims have been let on tribute at satisfactory terms.

MITT A l\UTTA SOUTH SUBDIVISION . .Mr. W. Il. Coel.rune, 11:lilling Registrm"

Alluvial mining continues with little change-if anything, it is for the worse, on account of the scarcity of water.

A good deal of prospecting for reefs is going ou and some payable, or supposed to be payable. have been feund ; but there is much difficulty in g'etting people sufficiently speculative to put machinery up.

,JAMIESON SUBDIVISION. ]tIl'. W~ Il. Edwards, JJfining Registrar.

The Gleeson's Lease Coml?any have let a contract to cross-cut in the No; ::I level, to prospect for the western leader and are also prospecting III other portions of the mine.

'The Sailor Bill's Company, after several delays, commenced crushing, and after pa.ssing 160 tons througll the mill were obliged to stop, owing to the scarcity of water.

Page 31: MINING SURVEYORS REGISTIlARS.1877-8. VICTORIA. REPOI~TS OF TnE MINING SURVEYORS & REGISTIlARS.QUARTER ENDED 31sT DECEJ\1BER 1877.PRESENTED TO BOTH HO,(;SES OF PAULIAMENT BY HIS EXCELLENCY'S

trhe PerseV'erance Tribute Company haV'e been engaged cross-cl1ttiIig to the east of the tecf', but nothing having been found or a payable nature they are now going to continue the main tunnel north.

The prospect of the Venture mine is looking better, and there is every probability of its again giving dividends. The Poverty Company, having struck a leader in the low tunnel, have stopped driving to prospect the new find.

SANDHURST MINING DISTRICT.

SANDHURST DIVISION. Mt·, N. G. Stepllens, ,Mining Registrar.

The most noticeable thing in connection with mining affairs during the past quarter is the completion of the Coliban scheme, whereby a, large supply of water is now available for sluicing. In consequence claims have been taken up for that purpose, but little, however, has been done in that way as yet.

Quartz mining generally has not been carried on with much spirit, but 1, revival is shortly expected. Deep sinking is persisted in, as there are sufficient inducements for doing so. 'l'he Victoria Reef Q. Company,

whilst sinking at 1,2,.1.0 feet, cut a spur showing gold; and the Victoria Reef G. M. Company have seen good gold at 970 feet. ',Chere are good prospects all along the Garden Gully line; and the Great Bxteuded Hustlers have found good stone.

A few claims at the Fruhling and Blue Jacket reefs, at the Whipstick, are yielding well, but are not worked energetically. The Alexander Reef, at Lockwood, is also paying well.

A few are doing pretty well at Wilson's Hill, lYIarong, and the rush is progressing. The sinking is from 120 to 150 feet,

At Elysian Flat a nugget weighing 75 ozs. was found in old workings at 40 feet, a few days since, by Mr, James Webster. '

The number of public companies and holdings are being lessened by amalgamation. The calls during the past three months amount to £12,553, and the dividends to £22,375. A trial of Nance's new safety cage was made at the City of Sandhurst Company's mine the other day, and it

gave great satisfaction. It is of very simple construction, but it effected t.he desired object in every instance.

KIL:MOl~E DIVISION.

jJir .• James Osborn, 111ining Registrar.,

There is nothing satisfactory in progress to report. No water was sold during the quarter.

HEATHCOTE AND WARANGA SOUTH SUBDIVISION.

jl{r. E, C. Bell, 'lYlin'illfl Registrar.

A great improvement in the yield of gold in my division and subdivision during the quarter just expired is apparent from the crushing of stone obtained in the Alison Oompany at Costerfield, which yielded 386 ozs. from 354 tons. The Alabama and Butler's Reef companies' claim has obtained 500 ozs. from 500 tOllS of stone.

No water was sold during the quarter.

WARANGA NORTH SUBDIVISION.

ALLUYIAI"

The rush to the Old Lead, Rushworth, spoken of in my last report, has now subsided; at one period of the quarter about 700 men were on the ground; but, although much wO~'k was done, they failed to follow the gold beyond a few claims" At present a rush is setting in to ground situated at the nort;h end of Nuggety Gully, Rushworth. The gold is nuggety-the largest nugget yet obtained (8 ozs. 14 dwts.) by Black and 00., the sinking being from 10 feet to 14 feet. Puddling machines are, in consequence of the ,'I'ant of water, all idle. Throughout the subdivision

, great scarcity of water prevails; it is with great difficulty that even small lots of dirt can be washed. Water for domestic purposes is almost exhaustcd.

QUARTZ.

The ret~rns of yield of gold from the reefs show a very large increilse on the corresponding quarter 1876. although two of the crushing m~chines, Holmes', Rushworth, and Victoria, Coy's Diggings, have been idle for the past three months for the want of water.

The manager R. U. G. 1''1.. Company, Frenchman'S, reports :-Durillg the quartel' a crushing machine with six stamp.heads has been erected, the main shaft 340 feet, reef 6 inches, driven at 340-foot level 100 feet to }J., 40 feet to W.; prospects good; 25 men at work. The reports, generally from the reefs throughout the subdivision are very favorable.

MARYBOROUGH MINING DISTRICT.

MARYBOROUGH DIVISION.

Mr. P. Vi1'tue,jun., Mining Regist1'a1',

QUARTZ MINING.

Rix pl'ospecting claims were taken up ~nd registered during the quarter. '.rhese claims are now being opened out, with every prospect of success to the owners. Thcy are situate at White Hills, Shell-back Gully, Golden Point, Donkey Gully, Mosquito, and Ohinaman's }'lat. A crushing of 21 tons from the claim at Golden Point gave a yield of 2 ozs. 17 dwts. to the ton ;' while a small crushing from the claim at Donkey Gully gave a yield of 3 ozs. 2 dwts. 6 grs. to the ton.

The Maryborough Consols mine, at Chinaman's Flat, has chauged hall~s. It was lately sold by the London Ohartered Bank to 1\£r. James Logan, of Timor. This gentleman is now actively engaged in an attempt to float a company for the purpose of resuming operations in this mine. The machinery aud all the appointments in connection with it are complete, and in first-class order. The original cost of the plant was between £3,000 and £4,000.

The Bristol Hill Mine is still progressing favorably. It is situate close to the town of Maryborough, and affords steady employment to a number of men. During the quarter 1,194 tons of stone from this mine were crushed. The yield obtained from this parcel produced all average of upwards of 8 dwts, to the ton, which is considered to be payable and satisfactory. A large Dumber of men are also now being employed by the Mariners' Reef Con:pany, and the works of the company l~re a hive of mining industry. 'l'hc Great Extended mine, at Blucher's, has becn let on tribute.

. ALI,UVIAL MINING.

The protracted and severe drought 'of this season has told with much effect on this class of mining during the quarter. Scarcely any rain has fallen in .this district for six months, and consequently the dams and water.holes, on which the miners place so much dependence, are now either wholly or almost dry .. It is also a remarkable fact that the public reservoir has got so low that the borough council have judgcd it necessary to caution the public against a too extravagant use of the water. 'fhe maximum depth of water in the reservoir is 12* feet; and, according to the present rate of consumption, the supply is not likely to endure beyond six weeks from the 1st of January. , The Duchess of Timor mine has again changed hands. The sale was effected by the London Chartered Bank,

and the purchaser is .Mr. Martin Loughlin, of Ballarat. 'rhe purchase-molley was £12,500. Mr. Loughlin means to form a company in order to work the mine. 'rhe pumping machinery connected with the mine will be made powerful and efficient.

The Count Bismarck mine continues to giye capital l'etmns. The Try Again Company are erecting new machinery on their claim at Timor. Their new issue of shm'cs have been ,quitted in the Ballarat market. The prospects of the company are excellent. None of the other mines in the division call for special remark.

During the past quarter mining in this subdivisiou has been very much depressed. The few miners wOl'king the old ground on the McCallum's old lead, Garden Flat, found their operatio)Js very much retarded during the last few weeks by the want of water for puddling. Nothing whatever has been doing in quartz mining. The Reliance and Kong Meng mines, Hanoverian Lead, still remain umvorked for the want of capital to start them, although it is an accepted fact that there is plenty of gold in either claim to reimburse any parties that could start them afresh.

AMHERST DIVISION.

Mr. Josepl. Smitn, lfining Reg~strar.

In quartz mining there appears to be a great want of crushing machinery. A small battery of six stamps iG now being erected on the Bet-bet, and the Church Hill Company are making arrangements for the erection of one at Amherst. The various companies have a large amount of stone at grass, waiting to be crushed. .

The increase in the yield is III ozs. over the previous quarter. In alluvial mining the Golden Gate Company, Rocky Flat, have mastered the water from the Sadowa old

workings, and are now in a fair way of making progress. 'rhe yield of gold from the various mines is 1,0660zs. over the previous quarter. No water has been sold during the quarter, owing to the municipal reservoir being under repair.

AVOCA SUBDIVISION.

Afr. D. Q'Lea7'Y, Mining SurlleYa?' and Registrar.

In alluvial mining Homebush is the only place at present engaging attention. In the Working Miners' claim the rich character of the ground in a northerly direction has been t.horoughly proved, and attention is being dii'ected southerly, where the washdirt is also 3 feet thick, and averages 18 ozs. to the machine. During the quarter ],381ozs. have been obtained out of this claim. On the north side boi'ing has recently been carried on to ascertain the direction of the deep ground. The ground lately takeu up 011 the Rutherford Creek, where the Lamplough old lead had been lost, has not been yet successfully worked, principally on account of ineffective machinery. In the old leads in the division a general dulness has prevailed, consequent on the unu~ual scarcity of water.

In quart.z mining nothing deserving special notice has occurred during the quarter.

DUNOLLY AND TARNAGULLA DIVISIONS.

Mr. W. G. Couchman, Mining Surve.1for and Registrm·.

I have the honor to report that mining matters in these divisions have slightly improved, more especially in quartz mining. ,

Bealiba Reef.-Queen's Birthday Company have been engaged pushing on their drives in 300 and 400 feet levels, and breaking out stolle·between those levels. Dming the quarter they have crushed 2,287 tons of stone for the handsome yield of 20zs. 11 dwts. 0'92 grs. per ton, or a total of 5,836 ozs. 5 dwts. of gold. The reef at the 400-foot level is 5 feet thick at the face, and at 300 feet is 10 feet thick. The prospects still continue good-rather improving, if anything. They have sunk an air·shaft 27'1 feet deep, .but have not yet broke into the workings; and .the new main Ehaft is being sunk, which is now down to a depth of 175 feet from the surface. King's Birthday Company, next south, have let a contract to sink a shaft on their lease to a depth of 300 feet, which is now down ]20 feet, and good pI'ogress is being made with it.

Monday l\Iorning Reef.-A lease has been applied for; and llew leases have been taken up at Ironbark Reef, about 41,- miles north·east of Dunolly, and the parties applyiug for the leases have very encouraging prospects 011 the surface.

. There is a slight decrease in the yield of gold this quarter, parUy owing to the stoppage of the Daly Lead trlbuters, in consequence of legal proceedin~s,·but they. have liOW, resumed work. . ..

.with the exception of· an improvement in the yield from. Fone's Quartz Mining Co~pany, mining matters are otherwise unchanged. . : ...,. . ,

WEDDERBURN DIVISION. J1b .. John Reach, Mining Registra1'.

There has been no improvement in mining 1l; this division since my last report. Water is getting to be'very scarce. There is none stored for sale in this division. No water was Bold during the qualter.

REDBANK SUBDIVISION. Mr. D. O'Leary, Mining Surveyor a1ld Registrar.

The scarcity of wuter, caused by the continual dry weather, has added to the usnal dulness in this subdivision.

ST. AHNAUD SOUTH SUBDIVISION .

.Jfr. W. G. COltchman, lrJinil1g Surveyor and Registrar.

Mining operations during the past quarter have been very dull, and there is nothing of any note to record. In consequence of the scaroity of water for washing purposes, all kinds of mining industries have more or les8 Buffered.

ST. ARNAUD NORTH SUBDIVISION.

Mr. W. 'G. Caucltman, 1.1fining Surveyor and Registrar.

Mining matters in this division during the past quarter have been very quiet; therefore there is nothing of any importance to record.

Tbe Sandhurst and St. Arnaud Chrysolite 'rribute Company have been driving a level from the shaft at 680 feet; to strike the reef which was obtained, and 300 tons of quartz miRed lherefrom, which yielded 1050zs. of gold.

The Lord Raglan Company, Wilson's Hill, crushed 900 tOllS of quartz taken from the 450 feet level, which yielded 244 OZ8. 12 d wts. of gold. '

In allnyial mining no new ground has been opened, the miners being principally engaged ill old shallow workings. Water is very scarce for prospecting purposes, and rain much needed.

CASTLEMAINE MINING DISTRICT.

CASTLEl\:IAINE DIVISION.

M1·. Thomas L. Brown, :Mining Surve.1JM and Registmr.

;\'~ining operations continue exceedingly depressed, many of our larger quartz mining companies doing nothing, and the mining appliances remaining idle.

'rhe Ajax, Devonshire, White Horse, Mauchester, Nnggety, Cumberland, Burns, Caledonia, Old Quartz Hill, Sebastopol, and other noted reefs, continue unworked,

The Eureka Consols, in driving and rising north, h~we discol'cred large bodies of gold-bearinR stone, materially improving their prospects.

The Wattle Gully Recf has been dull, but hetter prospects are found ill the central mine, and running into the 'Wattle Gullv Company's ground. .

The Cranky Ned's tributers have found rich quartz to commence the new year. The Argus Reef is yielding good returns to three parties "'orking it, and the Dead Cat is coming.to again, 'l'he Chew tOT} United, after determinedly sinking and drh'ing in sandstone countryawav west of the gold,

have now commenced a new shaft in the line of slate. •

Nmv ALLUVIAL DIGGINGS,

An application for an alluvial prospecting c]nim has jnst been made by J. T. Clark, 1. P. Clark, and Wm. Weir, who have discovered gold in 6 feet sinking, west of Mount iVIacedon, within the Stnte forest, and about half a mile west of John Daley's selection, where they state is a large extent of apparently auriferous country.

PUDDLING ·AND. SLUICING.

In a general way, the activity displayed, and the r(~tUl'ns furnished, at'e equal to any other quarter during the past year, two or three special cases being more satisfactory than usual.

Parsons and Co., of the Horseshoe Bend, are still working the old ground, with good results, 11 men being, employed washing about 4 feet of drift and clay. They average aho'ut 7 ozs. per week, which is equal to a little over. t dwt. to the load. They have still a large quantity of auriferous ground to operate on, which will, no doubt, profitably employ the party for some years to come ..

Meill's Freehold Gold Mining Company.-'I'his company ha.ve now got fairly to work in their new shaft; depth, 200 feet, They have no regularly defined lead of gold underlying the volcauic formation; but they are working within a 'space of about 400 feet in width, yielding 2t dwts. to the load, 36 men being constantly employed.

QUAILTZ MINING.

A general review of quartz mining during the past three months is not calculated to cause any particnlar depression, or induce any gloomy apprehensions for the future. This district (Fryer's Oreek) will still beltr favorable comparison with many of the old goldfields. Within the last three months we have been enabled to raise and crush 7,000 tOllS of quartz, averaging 6~ dwts. to the ton. 'Ihol'e are, certainly. speoial instances where particular claims have proved highly remunel'l1tive, but these will be referred to undcr special heads. .

The Ferron's Reef Company.-This company temporarily suspended mining operations during a crisis, owing to a law-suit, bnt recently has heen reorganized, and is now 1Jroceeding with vigor undcr the able supervision of the present manager. Various improvements and additions havc been effected in connection with the machinery and plant during the past six months, viz., a new boiler and winding-engine erected; the main shaft (0 feet by '1 feet) has also been cut dOWIl from the top to a deuth of 854 feet; and nelv poppet.heads, gfmgwny, &c., have beel! constructed. The company is now getting payable gold at the 330-foot cross·cut, and has cl'nshed during the past quarter :3,3,j5 tons. at an average of nearly 51, dwts. to the ton.

'1'he llerscvemllce Company (Tribute) . ...::..This company. under the managemeut. of Mr. A. :MiIIs, has sncceeded ,during the past quarter in proving thftt the Cnttle's line of reef is still worthy of consideration, the remit of the total cmshing' being ]50 tons, equal'140 ozs.,Oat 120 feet deep, "'ith It width of':1 feet.

The Fryer's Compally.-This company has heen veryaetive during the past quarter, the present manager, MI'. W. A: "farshall, having de.termined to follow the course laid down by his predecessor. lVIr. Philip Rowe, who was compelled to resign the mining m:magership through serious indisposition, 'l~hel'e are now 32 men employed, the al'erage yield for past quattel' being 7~ dwts. to the ton. '

'rho Blackhawk Company.-For some considerable time this company was in a rather depressed condition; it was originally started by MI'. fl. W. IJamb, and somc splendid returns were realized in the early days. Recently' some experienced miners have been working the mine under the tribute system. ~rhese men would appe:tr to have had some special knowledge of the nature of the grouud .and the ilirection of the lead of gold, as their mining knowledge and industry brings upthe average to \'ery good figures, viz., 13~" dwts. to the tOil. Over 500 ozs. have been realized during the past three months ill this claim. .

.' Duke and Duchess United, Goldeu Gully.-'l'his company has been a long time working. with considerable spirit and energy, and payahle gold has been struck. . . l Duke of. Cornwall Company.-The prescnt' mining manager of this important mine (1\£1'. E. W. H. Rowe)

reports that, from previous experience and obserl'atioll, he has great hopes of improved prospects respecting its ultimate value. The gold now being obtained is raisecl from GO to 200 feet, the width of the reef being 1 ft. 6 in. ~5~ ..

Rowe Brothel'S, Cattle's Roef.-This claim is not progressing quite so satisfactorily as previous experience would lead to exp, ect, the present average being 6.dwts. to the ton; the reef is 8 feet wide, and the depth from the surface is 155 feet. Rowe Brothers are, however, very enterprising and energetic; and as the proper developme.nt of the main line of reef (Cattle:s) depends on sinking and extcnding mining operations at greater depths, it is anticipated ~9me, great revival in mining matters wilhlltimntely take place, .and that at, no \'ery distant period.

and New North Com ish companies have been working from the surface to the The Cornish, Specimen Hill, lower levels by tribute parties.

Good gold nas been got at Stony Oreek; olle party obtainedl oz. per ton. Willard's Reef still is a gold. bearing one, 1 oz. per ton being quite common; but owners of claims are some

what reticent, and retnrns come in with those classified in table~ as prospectors, Argl,ls United Company are putting in a cross·cut at the 500.foot level, in ordel' to strike the Sandstone and

Collier's reefs. . In alluvial mining the tabulated statement shows all that is noteworthy. Thc want of water has seriously

affected this branch., , Twenty.five heads of water have been sold, at lOs. to 20s. per head per week per shift (three shifts per day).

Little has been doue in this division during' the quarter, except by the Ironstone Hill Company. The Lord Malmshury CompallY are still sinking their new shaft. The alluvial claims at Lauriston are idle, and are protected. The Italians' tnnnel has yielded but poor returns lately. The Chinamen's tunnel, in the Police Paddock, is also protected, in consequenee of a misunderstanding amongst

owners. The various tunnels in the Railway Hill are bei~g worjr€ld, but are yieldil1g poor ~eturnB.

BARKLY DIVISION. Mr. If. C. Bate, J.llining Surveyor and Registrar.

The only thing ?{orthy of notice in the milling history of this division during the past quarter is the occurrence of an alluvial "rush." to some ground situate between Darkly and Frenchman's. About 200 miners are on the ground, and their average finds are from 2 to 6 dwls. to the load.

No new grot:ud h.ns been opened, and mining operations generally throughout the division are confined to f05sicking. •

1'<0 water was sold during the quarter fol' mining purposes.

RAGLAN DIVISION • .All'. C. W. Mine1lin, ~A1ining Regist1'ar.

Manners and party, who, it is to be regretted for the district, have' uow worked out their claim on the old Red Streak Lead, Beaufort, at which they have been engaged for the lust seven or eight years. They have had a good yield of gold for the quarter just euded, having averaged a little over 11 guineas a man per week, reckoning the gold obtained at £4 to the oz .. . At Waterloo the New Victoria Gold Miuing Company continue to do well, and have had a yield of gold nearly up to the preceding quarter; but it is stated that the ground is· hoth difficult and expensive to work.

At present the New :Enterprise Company, at Charlton, seem to be getting but little, but mean to persevere, I understand.

In other localities mining is merely nominal throughout the district.

Nothing noteworthy has oC'cun'ed in this subdivision siuce the date of my last report. Quar! z mining iR still ill a dllpressed state. The allurial miners seem to be earning a livelihood, but nothing more. No work of any importance is being gone on witb at the galena mines, at Buchan. No water is sold for mining purposes in this subdivision •. Gold and galena are the only minerals searched for.

BOGGY CREEK SUBDIVISION. flf1', John Fletelter, :Mining Re,qistrar,

The avt'rage wages of alluvial miners is about £ l lOs. per week. Quarta nuners, when working for wages, get £2 lOs, per week.

'l'he dry summer has detprred miners from prospecting gullies. The reefs are at a standstill at present iu my division for want of capital to put up machinery. About twelve

reefs have been discovered and proved payable for some depths, hut they are now idle. Towards the end of t,he quarter a rush t.ook place to a large tlat near Boggy Creek, which promises well. The

prollpect yielded £4 lOs. per m(ln to four men for one week's work. 1'he scarcity of water is at present a great drawback to mining operations, as miners can only work ground close to the creeks.. .

,CROOKED RIVER DIVISION. jJlr. James Travis, JJ1ining Registrar.

. Quartz mining has been duller, if possihle, during this quarter Ihan it has ever beeu before in this division. The retul'lls from the Good Hope Tribute were much poorer than was anticipated, while those from the" Palmers ton " were slill worse. On the Wentworth, owing to some of the machinery breaking, less stone was crushed than was expected, and the yield very much below the usual average.

In alluvial mining I have little change to report. Some payable ground has been discovered ou the Wongun. garra, and a few parties are doing very well; but no rich patches have been struck yet. •

N~ mining i.s done in this division for metals or minerals other than gold, and there is no water sold,

JERICHO DIVISION. Nr. R. J. Donaldson, Mining Registrar.

As regards quartz mining in this district there is nothing of importance to report as having occurred during the past quarter. .
