Ecclesiastes 3

Ecclesiastes reminds us that, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under

heaven…”

This is true with life, seasons, and churches. However, simply because we move from one

season to another, whether it is by celebrating another birthday, or going from summer to fall,

does not mean the end of what is to be.

For everything there is a season, a time to celebrate, a time to enjoy, a time to remember and a

time to let go and to allow something new to come about.

So often we become “stuck” and fearful of change, fear of losing the past that we refuse or fail

to see the beauty in something new. In fact, Jesus teaches us to embrace change and to embrace

that which is new.

Jesus comes into our world, remains with us for a period of time and then tells them that the

time has come that he must go away. It wasn’t the end of what was to be but rather the

beginning.

John wrote in Revelation: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and

the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.” (Revelation 21:1)

A new heaven and a new earth could not possibly take place without a change.

“And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’”

(Revelation 21: 5).

Change is something that we should welcome instead of resisting. Change is hard, those new

shoes don’t just fit like the old ones, that shirt just does not feel the same, but after a period of

time, once we wear it a while, the new becomes just as comfortable as the old, only better.

People change, seasons change, life is all about change, and for churches to remain vital they too

must embrace change. The Word of God does not change, it is the same yesterday, today and

tomorrow, but the way we share God’s word so that the world can experience it must change.

The Old Testament was written in the old Hebrew language, Jesus spoke Aramaic, the New

Testament was mostly Greek. Later the church translated the scriptures into Latin and much later

into English.

My point is that God intends for the Word to reach people in their season of time. Not that the

word should be changed but presented in a way that people can understand.

During the Pleasant Grove Camp, the speaker dressed in biblical characters to make the message

alive. A child across from me stood on the pew to listen and to see what was happening.

What if each Sunday our children experienced the “living Bible” in a way that spoke to them, in

a way that tied together the Biblical stories and the Gospel message?

Summer is nearly over and fall is drawing near, there is a change of the seasons on the horizon,

and yes there is a change coming in the way we do church. As we face these new times,

remember that Jesus tells us not to worry, to paraphrase Jesus says “God’s got this”.

You see most of you reading this article, you have put your trust and faith in Jesus Christ. In

Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus tells us in Matthew 9:12; ‘Those who are well have no need of a

physician, but those who are sick.”

Instead being focused on meeting “our” desires, our

needs, what we want, we need to focus on reaching those

who do not receive this article, those who do not attend

any worship, those who are in need of the physician.

“Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven

and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make

disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the

Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching

them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And

remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

Matthew 28: 18-20.

I ended my message on Sunday July 28 saying, “It is no

secret what God can do, what he’s done for others he will

do for you.” God is waiting to pour out his spirit upon his

children, there is always room for one more, let’s not be a

gate keeper by refusing to change, but let’s hold our doors

open so that all may have the opportunity to experience

the love of God for themselves.

Thank you for listening,

Rev. Eric Lane

The youth of Mineral Springs will be flocking yards

for 12 weeks this summer. Here is how it works,

anyone may purchase "Flocking Insurance" for a

small one-time donation of $25.00, and this will

guarantee that your yard does not get flocked this

season. However, if you would like to make a

donation to the youth, you may send the flock of

flamingoes to anyone in the churches yard. If you

get flocked, just call Daniel Parker, 336-575-0272.

You can send them to someone else for a donation,

or we can just simply come pick them up for you.
