Universal Fluid Power Trainer

A prototype of the state-of-the-art fluid power and motion controltraining unit has been recently redesigned and developed. The machineis universal, transportable, compact and is designed to be used forprofessional education programs at the customer’s site. The prototypedesign was funded by CCEFP-ERC, and has been engineered to:

� cover a variety of disciplines, including hydraulics, electro-hydraulic, pneumatic, electro-pneumatic and electro-mechanical.

� include controlled parameters: position (linear and rotary), speed(linear and rotary), pressure, force and torque.

� include a controlled axis (linear and rotary) for each discipline.

� include controlled parameters: position (linear – angular), flow(linear – angular) and pressure, force and torque.

� feature state-of-the-art software, HMI loaded with MATLAB®/Simulink®, Automation Studio and custom-made software.

� feature a hydraulic power supply and a variable displacement pump with a flexible and interactive pump control mode of the user’s choice.

� include a manual and automated setting of the maximum workingpressure and/or flow rate.

� deliver safety warnings in case of oil overheating, cavitation, lowoil level or filter clogging.

� feature an automated sub-systems test wizard.

� feature smart and interactive maintenance and troubleshooting test wizards.

MSOE’s fluid power seminars merge classroom theory withintense, practical laboratory sessions. The state-of-the-artlaboratory contains four advanced workstations, eachspecifically designed for the individual interested in gaining adetailed and thorough understanding of all aspects of fluidpower, including electrohydraulic system design. Seminarparticipants use servo and proportional valves in tests andsystems, and make system interconnections. Computers collectdata that facilitate the construction and analysis of feedbackcontrol systems. This Electrohydraulic Motion Control Laboratoryis not found at any other educational institution in the world.

The Applied TechnologyCenter™ (ATC) is the researcharm of MSOE. It serves as atechnology transfer catalystamong academia, business,industry and governmentalagencies. The close associationbetween MSOE and the business,industrial community has long beenone of its strengths; applied researchserves as a renewable resource in thislinkage. FPI™ at MSOE

The Fluid Power Institute™ (FPI) at MSOE is one of the leadingacademic fluid power research laboratories in the nation.Established in 1962, FPI is a leader in fluid power, research,evaluation, mechatronics and education.

Test and Evaluation Programs

FPI conducts testing and evaluation for some of the largesthydraulic companies in the world, including Caterpillar, JohnDeere, Husco, and Parker Hannifin, as well as system evaluationfor the U.S. military. The institute has specialized equipmentfor pump, valve, motor, cylinder and filter testing. FPI hasspecialized equipment for most hydraulic componentevaluations and has the capacity to operate a wide variety ofhydraulic components under a wide range of pressure and flowconditions. It also has the instrumentation and expertise tosafely control and monitor endurance tests 24 hours a dayseven days a week. Tests can be conducted in accordance withappropriate NFPA, ANSI, SAE, ISO and MIL standards.

Engineering Services

The key to developing a reliable, available and maintainablefluid power system is to make it an integral part of theengineering process, and to eliminate failures and failuremodes through identification, classification, analysis andremoval or mitigation. When developing fluid power systems, itis imperative to select the right activities and to conduct thoseactivities at the right time. The engineering faculty and staff atFPI are experts in fluid power, and can help you develop highlyreliable, available and maintainable fluid power systems andcomponents. We can assist in developing your fluid powerapplication from a simple design to an efficient and reliablehydraulic or pneumatic system.

Tribology Services

The FPI has been a leader in contamination analysis andfiltration technology for decades. In the 1980s, FPI pioneeredthe use of automatic particle counters in hydraulic fluidanalysis. In the 1990s, FPI pioneered the development ofsurgically clean fluids for initial-fill applications. In the 2000s,FPI was the very first to use Atomic Force Microscopy in wearparticle analysis. FPI’s role as a practitioner and educator inthese areas has truly advanced the fluid power industry. Ourcurrent research thrust incorporates the study andformulation of energy-efficient hydraulic fluids—an endeavorfunded by a grant from the National Science Foundation andindustry partners.

Many of the world’s largest equipment manufacturers use FPIto test new hoses, tubes, cylinders, coolers, reservoirs, pumps,bearings and valve assemblies to determine the type and sizeof manufacturing contamination, left in the component asreceived by the customer. Through the use of advanceddiagnostic methods such as ferrography, atomic forcemicroscopy, stereomicroscopy and laser particle imaging, earlydetection and root-cause analysis are possible.

INTRODUCTION TO HYDRAULICS

This 27-hour seminar is designed toacquaint individuals with the fluidpower field and provide a practicalworking knowledge of this importantand growing industry. Who Should Attend?This 27-hour seminar is designed formaintenance and engineering servicespersonnel who have to identify and solveproblems with PLC processors, commissionmachine changes and start PLCprogrammers focused on fluid powerapplications. Dr. Medhat K. Khalilis the director ofprofessionaleducation. He has abachelor’s degree inmechanicalengineering and amaster’s degree influid power

engineering from Military TechnicalCollege and Cairo University, respectively,of Cairo, Egypt. He earned his Ph.D. inmechanical engineering from ConcordiaUniversity, Montreal, Canada. Khalil hasmore than 20 years of experience in fluidpower control. Prior to joining MSOE, hewas employed as a hydraulic systemsimulation software developer for CAEInc. and an adjunct professor forConcordia University, Montreal, Canada.Khalil worked for five years as thetechnical officer and training manager for Mannesmann Rexroth in Egypt. His current interest is in developinguniversal fluid power software andhardware controllers. Khalil is a memberof education outreach of the Center forCompact and Efficient Fluid Power, hasextensive experience in modeling andsimulation of hydraulic systems anddesigning electro-hydraulic systems. He isa listed consultant by the NFPA.

Thomas Labus, P.E.,is a professor inMSOE’s MechanicalEngineeringDepartment. Heearned a bachelor’sdegree inaeronauticalengineering fromPurdue University

and a master’s degree in theoretical andapplied mechanics from the University ofIllinois.

Paul Michael,C.L.S., is a researchchemist in MSOE’sFluid Power Institute. He earned his B.S. in chemistry at the University ofWisconsin-Milwaukeeand graduated withdistinction from

Keller Graduate School of Management.He has more than 30 years of experiencein the formulation and testing ofhydraulic fluids and lubricants. Paul is anSTLE Certified Lubrication Specialist andchairs the NFPA Fluids Committee. Inaddition to his research in contaminationanalysis, he is currently investigatingenergy efficient hydraulic fluids in theNSF funded multi-university Center forCompact and Efficient Fluid Power.

Thomas Wanke’78,’96, C.F.P.E., isthe director ofMSOE’s Fluid PowerInstitute, America’sleader in fluid powertechnology researchand education. Hehas more than 40

years of experience in fluid powertechnology, 38 of which have been atMSOE. Wanke has a bachelor’s degree inmechanical engineering technology and amaster’s degree in engineering with afluid power specialty option, both fromMSOE. He has worked on projects in thefollowing areas: component and systemdesign; development and evaluation; fieldtroubleshooting and failure analysis; andfluids, filtration and contaminationcontrol. Wanke is a member of SAE and FPS. He is chairman of the NFPATechnical Board and was Educational Program Co-chairman for IFPE 2011.

Rob Arbouw -Senior TrainerBorn in theNetherlands, Arbouwstarted working forApplied TechSystems (ATS) morethan 12 years ago.He is a graduate of

the University of Amsterdam with abachelor’s degree in mechanicalengineering and a specialization inflexible production automation. Arbouwstarted working with PLC in Europe, andcontinued after moving to the UnitedStates in 2003. In 2004, he beganproviding PLC training to many ATScustomers throughout the U.S. All thiscontributed to his wide knowledge ofdifferent PLC platforms used around theworld and resulted in a clearunderstanding of the need of standardprogram techniques. As an ATS trainer,Arbouw maintains the highest customersatisfaction rating of all U.S. trainers.

The Center for Compact and Efficient FluidPower (CCEFP) is a National ScienceFoundation (NSF) Engineering ResearchCenter, funded for a five-year period with$17.5 million from NSF, $3.5 million inmembership dues from participatingcompanies, and $3 million fromparticipating universities.

Our Center is a network of researchers,educators, and industry working togetherto transform the fluid power industry—how it is studied, applied and taught. Fluidpower is used in a wide range ofindustries, including manufacturing,transportation, aerospace, construction,agriculture and medical devices. Nearly allU.S. manufacturing plants rely on fluidpower in their production of goods.

The work of the Center will have profoundsocietal impact, bringing dramatic changeto fluid power applications now found in abroad spectrum of industries. Examples ofinnovative technology that will result fromCenter research include devices thatimprove mobility for the ailing and elderly,autonomous rescue and service robotsand fluid-powered portable hand tools.

Research The CCEFP has four research goals: todramatically improve the energyefficiency of fluid power in currentapplications; to improve the efficiency oftransportation by developing fuel efficienthydraulic hybrid vehicles; to develop un-tethered portable human-scale fluid powerdevices; and to make fluid power clean,quiet, safe and easy to use. The researchneeded to realize these goals is beingconducted in three coordinated thrustareas and demonstrated in five test beds.Thrust areas include Thrust 1 - Efficiency,Thrust 2 - Compactness, and Thrust 3 -Effectiveness. Center research isdemonstrated in five test beds: anexcavator, sUV (small Urban Vehicle),

compactrescue crawler, fluidpower-assisted portable handtools, and fluid power-assistedorthoses.

EducationThe Center's network and research enablethe development and delivery ofinnovative education and outreachprograms relevant to fluid power tomiddle and high school students,undergraduate and graduate students,engineers, industry practitioners, and thegeneral public. Some highlights: � Working with Project Lead The Way to

add fluid power content to PLTW'sengineering curriculum for middle andhigh schools, now taught nationwide.

� Revising undergraduate curriculum soall mechanical engineers understandfluid power.

� Developing specialized fluid powercourses for graduate and advancedundergraduate students.

� Building an industrial internshipprogram for undergraduate andgraduate students.

� Collaborating with the Science Museumof Minnesota in the development ofpermanent and traveling fluid powerexhibits.

� Producing a documentary on fluidpower, in conjunction with Twin CitiesPublic Television.

� Working with tribal colleges inMinnesota and Wisconsin to promoteengineering among Native Americanstudents and to provide mentoringservices.

Industrial Collaboration/TechnologyTransferMore than 60 fluid power manufacturers,distributors, and suppliers have becomesupporting members of the Center—anunprecedented demonstration of industrysupport. In addition, many of thesecompanies contribute equipment andprovide project champions who activelywork with universities on project and testbed research.

GROHMANN MUSEUM

While your on campus, visit the Grohmann Museum, home to the world’smost comprehensive art collection dedicated to the evolution of humanwork. The museum has three floors of galleries where the art collection isdisplayed, as well as a spectacular rooftop sculpture garden.

The collection comprises more than 800 paintings and sculptures from 1580to the present. They reflect a variety of artistic styles and subjects thatdocument the evolution of organized work. The museum also presentsthree to four special exhibitions per year.

The museum is named in honor of Dr. Eckhart Grohmann, an MSOE Regent,Milwaukee businessman and avid art collector who donated his collectionto MSOE in 2001 and subsequently the funds to purchase, renovate andoperate the museum.
