Welcome to a New World of Music
From guitar to violin, drums to keyboard, flute to trumpet.Whether you’re a complete beginner or an establishedmusician we will enhance your music making.
Founded in 1992, the Milton KeynesMusic Service has brought music tothousands of children in Milton Keynesover the years and continues to do sowith weekly attendance figures ofmore than 450 children at Music Centreand over 3000 in schools.
The Music Centre aims to give childrenan enjoyment of music while strivingfor the very highest standards forthose students who wish to pursuemusic more seriously.
Most of our activities and groups takeplace on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings at our centre inSimpson, and at Shenley Brook EndSchool. In addition, the Youth Orchestraand Wind Orchestra meet at the CityChurch in Central Milton Keynes.
Pupils who require individuallytaught lessons can receive these via the not-for-profit organisation ‘MK Music Co-operative’. Working in partnership with the MK Music Service,it provides a wide range of smallgroup and individual instrumentaland vocal tuition*.

Kinder 2/3
In this fun introduction to music,young children learn simple singinggames and rhythmic patterns basedon the Kodály Method. This is awonderful way to introduce yourchild to music that helps thembegin to develop their concept ofpitch and pulse.
The children are also encouraged torespond to music through movementand can use a variety of untuned percussion instruments. They learnhow to take turns, play with control,start and stop, and change the paceand dynamics of their sounds.

Kinder 4
Following on from Kinder 2/3 the children build upon the range of thesongs and chants they can play andsing. They learn to express themselvesmore confidently - alone and ingroups - and enjoy games using balls, hoops, puppets and scarves. The children explore the musical elements of pitch, pace, dynamics,
texture and timbre through tunedand un-tuned percussion, and createtheir own sequences of sounds andrhythmic phrases. They also begin to ‘notate’ their ideas using simple written symbols.

An introduction to the enjoyment of making music withothers. Children are invited to become part of an enrichingexpressive experience that will teach them both practicalskills and musical theory.
Your child will learn how to perform a range of familiar musicThe confidence and sense of achievement that comes from mastering a newskill is one of the most rewarding aspects of music making, as you will see foryourself at your child’s first performance.
Parents are welcome to stay with their children in their sessions if they wish, orthey can wait in the coffee shop. Please note that children are not supervisedwhen outside their sessions.

Junior Music Workshop
A dynamic group for younger children,who will sing, move, and play percussion instruments. The class willprovide children with many of theskills they will need to learn to play amusical instrument.
They will develop their creative skills,their concept of pitch, pulse, rhythmand time-values, and increase their
knowledge of how music can be written down on paper.

Play Recorder
The recorder is the ideal first instrumentas it is easy to learn and enables a groupof children to start playing togetherimmediately. This fun session is forcomplete beginners, or for children upto and including Year 2 who are alreadylearning to play.
Children are taught how to play accurately and musically, while
learning the basics of how to readmusic in this relaxed and friendly group.

Play Keyboard
Learning to play the keyboard is a musically exciting experience forchildren, and is also a good introduction to piano skills. Thisgroup is for complete beginners or children who have just started playing. Come along and have a goin a lively and supportive setting.

Young Musician’s Package
Being a member of a music group is great fun. It developsyour musicianship as you learn from each other and motivateeach other to try new things.
Students are able to relax in a friendly group and enjoy playing, while getting toknow other young music makers.
There is a break for everybody at 10.30am that is supervised by staff members.Refreshments can be brought from home or purchased on site at Simpson. Parentscan stay if they wish, but please note that children are not supervised when outsidetheir sessions unless they are on an official break.

Share the vibrant energy that is ourmost advanced Brass ensemble.This is a friendly and inclusive brassband. This orchestra has enjoyed a greatdeal of success in recent years, including performances at the national festival ‘Music for Youth’ at The Royal Albert Hall.

Youth Orchestra
For our most experienced and ablestudents, this senior group will give you the platform to join together and create performancesthat truly inspire. There is a strongemphasis on high quality music making and disciplined rehearsing on a Friday evening, but there is alsosome time for socialising with friends.
There will also be the opportunityto perform in local and nationalcompetitions such as ‘Music ForYouth’ and ‘MK Festival of the Arts’.

InstrumentsIf you wish to purchase a musical instrument, we run an ‘Easy BuyScheme’. This enables you to buy at VAT free prices, either in full or over a 12 month period, interest-free. For beginners, we also offer a hirescheme that costs £40 for the first year.
Data protectionAll personal information held oncomputer and manual files will remain confidential to Milton KeynesCouncil, and will not be divulged to anyother individuals or organisations forany other purposes. Terms and Conditions
1. It is assumed that pupils are continuing
with ensemble membership unless notice
of withdrawal is given in writing or a ‘stop
notification’ is completed on-line at
www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/musicmk
Notice of withdrawal is required before the
end of term if you do not wish to continue
the following term. Failure to notify us
means you may be liable for half a term’s
charge in lieu of notice.
2. Parents/students are required to inform the
Music Service of any change of details such
as address, contact numbers, school, etc.
3. The Music Centre offers 30 sessions in a full
academic year. Dates are given in newsletters
and are on our website. Please note: This is
not necessarily 10 sessions per term.
4. Charges for Ensembles are invoiced each
term. Payment must be made within 30 days.
5. Concessions are available for Ensembles for
children who are eligible for free school
meals. To continue to receive reduced rates
an application for concessions must be
re-submitted at the beginning of each new
academic year in September.
6. Refunds are not offered if a child misses a
session for any reason.
7. Whilst every effort is made to accommodate
all Ensemble requests, occasionally a place
may not be immediately available. In this
case, your child’s name will be added to a
waiting list and parents will be notified when
a place becomes available.
8. Supervision – The Music Centre accepts
responsibility for the supervision of a student
while the student is participating in a Music
Centre activity. At all other times the
responsibility lies with the parents.
9. Instruments and accessories are usually
expected to be provided by the parents.
The Music Service does not accept liability
for loss or damage to any personal
possessions or instruments. Instruments
should be insured under an “all risks” policy
or via a specialist insurer such as Allianz.
