How do I get data into WindMilMap that is collected in the field?

• Standard ASCII format– .std = model information– .gps = pole or point object information– .asm = assembly information

• MultiSpeak– Version 1,2 or 3– .xml

Page 6: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

I am about to start a Field Collection; how should I collect the data so it’s easy to get into WindMilMap?

• WindMil Help file– Will show you the fields and what order they need to be in to get the

data into WindMil or WindMilMap

• .std layout– Is the Milsoft format to get electrical data into WindMil or WindMilMap– Is a comma delimited format– Required Fields

• There are 6 required fields to build a good connectivity model.

• .gps• .asm

What to do if Leader Lines are not visible

• Open the Model in WindMil.• Make sure the Draw All Leader Lines is selected

in View > Display Options under Circuit Element Symbols tab.

• In the Updatable Utilities, run Fix Incorrect Coordinates and run Initialize Tree Invariants.

Page 11: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

When the pole name is changed in WindMilMap, its change is not reflected in the External Tables.

• Use the Field Mappings tab to edit the External Tables.• Will only show the Fields in the Used Field column

Page 12: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

Setting Up External Tables

• Open the External Table Manager in WindMilMap by clicking on WindMilMap | External Table Manager… – In WindMil go to Preferences | External Table Manager…

• The default brings up the Linked External Tables Tab.• To set up a connection, click on the Database

Connections Tab.

Page 13: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

Setting Up External Tables

• Database Connection…

• Name the database connection. Example: poles table

• Build Connection String

Page 14: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

Setting Up External Tables• Once the name is added, the

Data Link Properties dialog opens.

• Can connect to any DB Provider; commonly used is the Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider

• Click Next >>

Page 15: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

Setting Up External Tables

• Click on the Connection tab.• Click on the ellipsis to browse

to your external database.• Put in user name and

password, if needed.• Test Connection.• Fix if the connection is not

good, or click OK if the test succeeded.

Page 16: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

Setting Up External Tables• Click on Linked External Tables tab.• Create New Table Link.• Select Database Connection.• Select Table.• Select the Key Field.• Move Fields from Available Fields to

Used Fields.

Page 17: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

Setting Up External Tables• The Field Mappings tab controls the relationships

between fields in external tables and fields in WindMil.

• Table is the name of the table that contains the field.

• Field is the name of the field itself• Give a field a nickname by entering it in the Alias

column.• Select a WindMil Field that corresponds with the

field in the external table.• Turn on the Edit? checkbox, which saves the

WindMil field to your external database when you save the WindMil model.

Page 18: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

Setting Up External Tables• To complete the link to your external

table, you must fill in the values on the Table Uses tab.

• Linking the table to the element type does two things:– It ensures that data from that table

appears on the Asset Management tab for elements of that type.

– If you selected the Edit? checkbox on the Field Mappings tab, it ensures that data from WindMil is saved to the table.

Page 19: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How to tell the difference between Primary and Secondary lines

• WindMil does not need to know if the line is primary or secondary; it just needs to know it is a line.

• WindMilMap knows to draw primary and secondary lines differently, according to the output voltage of the Transformer.

• Can be adjusted in the Layer Properties

Page 20: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How to tell the difference between Primary and Secondary lines

• Base Tab• Now there are labels for

Primary and Secondary lines.

• In the Drop-down, you can Edit the Rules.

Page 21: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How do I Color by Circuit in WindMilMap?

• This is not an easy process right now.• There is an enhancement on the list to make it easier. • First in ArcMap, start at the beginning of a circuit, right-

click and select all downline elements.• Then right-click on the OH line layer; go to Selection >

Create Layer from Selected Elements.

Page 22: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How do I Color by Circuit in WindMilMap?

• ArcMap creates a new Layer called OH line selection.• Then you can make that layer of OH line look any way

you want to.• You have to do that for each element type you want to

color.• Create a Group Layer for each Circuit.• Then place each layer under that Group Layer.

Page 23: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How do I set up permanent queries? • In the Selected Element Window, there’s a drop-down window,

where queries are stored, called the Query List.

• Query List - Allows you to choose which model query is used to populate the selected element grid

• Run Selected Query - If the query contains rules, clicking this button runs the query, which may change which elementsare selected.

• Edit Queries - Clicking this button opens the Model Query Builder, which allows you to create, delete, or edit model queries.

Page 24: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How do I set up permanent queries?• Model Query - allows you to choose which query you want to

view or edit

• Select - allows you to choose which attributes you would like to see

• From - elements from which you want the query to return data

• Where - allows you to create rules defining which elements will be included in the query

• Sort By - the results of your model query using any of the selected attributes

Page 25: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How do I set up permanent queries?

• Clicking OK on the Model Query Builder saves the query in the Query List.

• It also runs that Query for the first time.• If you ever need to run that query again, select

the query in the Query list and then click the Run Selected Query button.

How do I import a staking job into WindMilMap?• In WindMilMap 7.3, go to the WindMilMap

menu.

• Select Import Data.

• Select the file structure of the data you are trying to import; for staking most of the time it will be MultiSpeak Version 2 or 3.

• Click Next.

Page 27: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How do I import a staking job into WindMilMap?

• Most of the time leave default

• Unless you know for sure you need to perform one of the actions

Page 28: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How do I import a staking job into WindMilMap?• MultiSpeak Pole Field

Mappings

• This is where you can tell which MultiSpeak Field matches a field in the External Tables so you can push data to the External Tables for your Poles.

Page 29: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How do I import a staking job into WindMilMap?• Select the .xml you want to

import.• Select what to do if there

are duplicate elements.• Select the Destination

Model and EQDB.• Click Finish to import the

staking job.

How do I Rotate Symbol Text? - Individually• Select the WindMil Edit Tool.• Right-click on the Element.

– Context Menu will open.• Select Rotate Symbol Text.• Select the text layer you want to rotate.• The view area shows the rotating text as you

move your mouse.• Click on the view area where you want the text

to stay.

Page 35: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How do I change my Symbol for Transformers?• Go into Layer Properties.• Select the Label you want to Edit.• Double-click on the symbol in the Preview window.• The ESRI Symbol Selector opens.

– You can select a previously-made symbol;– Or you can go in to the Symbol Selector properties and create a

new symbol.

• Click OK, and the symbol for that label is now changed.

Page 36: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How do I reduce my legend so I can print my map?

• Only checked symbol values show in legend.

• Unchecked values still draw on map.• Legend symbol is independent from

properties symbol.

Page 37: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How do I show differences between Step and Distribution Transformers?

• Go into Layer Properties.• The Base tab

– Changes symbol values– Different for each feature type– Allows for different symbol value breakdowns

Page 38: Milsoft GIS Software: Support FAQ Part 2

How does WindMilMap know if it’s a Step Transformer?

• This is determined by input and output voltage.• Substation Transformers have an input voltage of >= 50 kV.• Distribution Transformers have an output Voltage of <= to

.600 kV.• Step Transformers are everything else .• Threshold can be adjusted.• Go to WindMilMap Menu > Setting under the General Tab.
