VOLUNTEER NEWS If you would like to volunteer in your child’s classroom or chaperone a field trip some, you must have completed a volunteer form and have a background check. If you’ve had this done in the last few years you do not need to do it again. You can check with the front office to make sure you are on the list. This process can take several weeks, so don’t wait. If you think you might want to chaperone a trip later this year, now is the time to check with the office to see if you are on the approved volunteer list. You can get a volunteer application at the front office.

2016 LYME DISEASE K-8 POSTER CONTEST Theme: Tick Watch

Schools in RSU 40 will be sponsoring entries into this year’s Maine CDC Lyme disease poster contest. This is open to students in grades K-8. Students should follow the contest guidelines listed below and turn posters into the school nurse’s office by Friday, April 1st, 2016. Posters will be voted on and the final three in each grade will be sent in to the Maine CDC to be entered in the contest.

Poster should illustrate importance of awareness of ticks and mindfulness of ticks to prevent Lyme disease.

• A basic understanding of Lyme disease and Lyme disease prevention is required. For Lyme disease education visit http://www.maine.gov/lyme or http://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/infectious-disease/epi/school-curriculum/index.shtml. Poster should illustrate at least one of the 4 approaches to personal prevention:

o Use caution in tick-infested areas o Use an EPA approved repellant o Wear protective clothing o Perform daily tick checks both visibly and by touch

• Posters should be: creative, colorful, and easily seen from a distance. • Posters should be on white drawing or heavy construction paper. 12 x 18 is the preferred size. (11x 17

will also be accepted). Do not laminate or mount. • Please print the following information on the back of each poster entry: Child’s name, age, and grade,

teacher’s name (or class name), total number of students per class, school name, school address, and school phone number.

• For additional information on ticks, or examples of last year’s winners, visit: http://www.maine.gov/lyme.

Contest Rules

• Judging: Posters will be on display at the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) building where the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Program is located. Submission judges will be Maine state employees.

• Winners and Recognition: Winners will be notified by May 13, 2016. A total of 4 winners will be chosen:

• One winner each from grades K-1, grades 2-3, grades 4-5, and grades 6-8. • Each winner will receive a one-day family pass to a Maine State Park of their choice. In addition

every member of the winner’s classroom will receive a personal Tick Removal Kit • Property: All posters will become the property of Maine CDC and will not be returned. The

Infectious Disease Epidemiology Program may duplicate posters to use as part of Lyme Disease Awareness Promotional efforts but in no instance will this involve monetary transactions. If a student (or parent) does not wish his/her poster to be duplicated, “DO NOT DUPLICATE” must be printed on the back of the poster along with the student’s name prior to submission.
