MHV 1st ELEVEN 2013 SEASON REPORT What a season! A strong start, a shaky middle and a fantastic finish, culminating in 8 consecutive victories, punctuated only by a rain off. With an end of season tally of 13 wins, 3 defeats, 1 draw and 2 rain offs, Mill Hill Village 1st XI held off the persistent challenge of Northchurch IIs by the slim margin of just 6 points, to claim the Division 8 title. The points scoring format of the Herts league, encourages and rewards attacking cricket and ultimately it was this spirit that brought the silverware back to Burtonhole Lane. Under the naturally attacking leadership of skipper David Overton, the 1st XI played to win until the final ball of every game. The only drawn match of the 1st XI’s 2013 season in the Herts League occurred when chasing in a rain affected and shortened game against North Enfield, which saw the Village chasing victory until the final over but ending up nine wickets down and just a few runs short. Northchurch IIs actually lost fewer games than Mill Hill Village but they claimed victory in one less match as well and the extra 30 point win proved crucial in the end. The Village proved able to win in all conditions and in all circumstances across the season. Whether chasing or batting first, in bowling or batting friendly conditions, when needing to hold their nerve at vital times, the side found a way to win more often than not. The low point of the season was actually in the game against Northchurch. Collapsing from 119-4 to 158 all out, ending up just 4 runs short of chasing the very modest target of 162. Thankfully this defeat, early in the season, at the hands of the nearest rivals did not prove too costly in the end. This was one of those occasions and there were others, where complacency and sloppiness crept into the team’s performances, more often in the field than with the bat. The greater challenges provided in Division 7 next year, will mean these need to be eradicated if a fourth consecutive promotion is to be achieved. The high point undoubtedly came at Baldock in a crucial penultimate match of the season. Baldock won the toss and surprisingly decided to insert the visiting Village. The scoreboard ticked over rapidly, thanks largely to a 121 run partnership between Danny Potter (88) and Marcus Cara (64). However, Felix Charles (24) was the only other player to make double figures and the innings petered out just as quickly, moving from 202 for 3 after 36 overs, to 225 all out in the 43rd over, with the last 3 wickets falling for no runs. The early innings close did mean that the Village had 57 overs to try and bowl out Baldock. With points so crucial at the end of the season only a win would suffice. When the score reached 90 for 0 in the 29th over the task looked more than a little difficult. The catalyst for change in the game was a spectacular catch by young George Downes who clung on to a high swirling catch running backwards at short fine leg. Thereafter, wickets were picked up at fairly regular intervals but the runs were flowing too. It was crucial to keep Baldock in the game and interested in the win, so a couple of change bowlers were employed to hand them a few cheap runs. As the innings drew to a close, all 4 results remained possible. Dave Overton and Majid Asif were working their way through the Baldock middle and lower order. With 2 or 3 overs remaining and at 8 wickets down, Baldock realised they didn’t have the fire power to get over the line and started to block. In the penultimate over, Majid Asif was finally given an LBW decision having had half a dozen really close shouts turned down. With the light fading fast, it inevitably fell to the shipper to try and take the final wicket in the final over. The fourth ball took a thick edge and flew quickly to gully where Danny Potter held on to a superb and crucial catch and was duly mobbed by the rest of the jubilant Village 1st XI. This victory kept the title challenge on track and on the following final Saturday, the 1st team proved themselves worthy winners of the Division 8 title by finishing the season in style, with an away victory against a battling Northwood Town IIs. Winning the toss so frequently in 2013 was a big bonus and it was to the visitors’ considerable relief that David Overton called correctly again. Inevitably he chose to chase, to keep destiny in our own hands, backing the batsmen to overhaul any target set. Northwood Town had not read the script properly and rather than roll over, they amassed a decent 222 off the full 53 overs available to them, losing their last wicket off the last ball of the innings. Skipper

Overton was the pick of the bowlers, bamboozling several lower order batsmen with his slower ‘knuckle’ ball that came out well on this occasion. 4-54 from 19 overs was a decent return and Majid Asif’s 3-51 was also handy. The Northwood No.4 deserves a mention, scoring a century at a good rate. So the Village had only 47 overs to chase down the creditable and competitive total set. 223 runs to win the match and the title. It was a surprisingly calm dressing room at tea. The preceding run of victories had been built on solid batting foundations, not least from opening pair Daniel Potter and Hinal Gajjar. An almost perfect start followed, which gave huge confidence to the waiting batsmen watching from the balcony viewpoint overlooking the ground. A century opening stand was delivered and was exactly what the team needed. In typical Village style however, the cruise hit some turbulent waters along the way, with both openers dismissed in the space of 2 overs. Hinal Gajjar went first, nicking off to the keeper for 42. Daniel Potter amassed another meaningful contribution before falling for 58. Both fell to the change bowlers early in their spells and this left Phil Smith and Marcus Cara at the crease, both yet to score and having to start against spin from one and soon both ends. The combination of a decent track and at least one loose ball per over, allowed the pair to settle in and take the score from 108-2 after 21 overs to 154 after 32 overs. Marcus Cara (23) and Felix Charles (17) played well and made good contributions before falling to injudicious shots. At the other end Smudger was looking solid and secure and waiting patiently for the bad balls to arrive. With spinners bowling full lengths at both ends to a deep set field, scoring options were limited to pushes down the ground and pouncing on the occasional short ball. The required run rate remained very manageable at about 4 runs per over. Majid Asif joined Phil Smith at the crease, with the score at 191 for 4 at the end of the 39th over. Nerves were jangling despite the relatively straightforward equation of 32 needed in 7 overs with 6 wickets left. At 207-4 after 43 overs, 16 were needed from the final 4 overs. At which point Smudger and Majid cut loose, hitting 15 runs in one over, including a majestic and beautifully timed straight six, to bring up an equally well timed half century for Phil Smith (57*). It was left to ‘the finisher’ Majid (14*) to hit the winning runs and bring up victory by 6 wickets and with 16 balls to spare. The divisional title was secured and celebrated in suitable style! So, another excellent, successful and hugely enjoyable season for the Village 1st XI. The side, or rather the squad, is one of the few in the division who have players who can make regular and meaningful contributions throughout the team. The regular top 5 batsmen in the order (Danny, Hinal, Smudger, Marcus & Felix) scored more than 2100 runs between them, representing 75% of all runs scored, which as Felix would say is “proper cricket”. But there is much under-utilised batting talent in the lower and middle order too, many of whom can and did make important runs when needed. The bowling has good variety and is generally tight and reliable. Of the six bowlers who took 10 or more wickets (Overton, Majid, Marcus, George, Andy Potter and Sunny Raval), all of them took their wickets at an average of less than 21 a piece, with strike rates generally around 30 balls and economy rates less than 4. In Rory McLeod and Steve Pullen we are spoilt for choice with wicket keepers and we were also blessed with excellent support from all the players who came into the side for shorter stints such as Saahil Mehra, Zafar Basit, James Thompson, Ajay Bhatia, Matt Hawkes etc Special mentions to the leading batsman, bowler and all-rounder, all of whom made a case for player of the season. Danny Potter got the nod in the end. Danny Potter - 679 league runs David Overton – 34 league wickets Marcus Cara - - 421 league runs, 24 league wickets (also leading fielder with 10 catches and 2 run outs) Despite his 374 league runs, Smudger will be collecting the award for the most ducks, having been dismissed for nought three times. And lastly a notable mention to Hinal Gajjar for finally converting his net form into runs in the middle and joining the Centurions club.

MHV 2nd ELEVEN 2013 SEASON REPORT

After last season’s promotion going down to the wire in the last game, we went into the 2013 season in Division 11 looking for promotion once again, preferably with less drama. With a settled squad we were optimistic that another good season lay ahead. The season started with the young St Albans 4th team electing to bat and being bowled out for 144 by reinvented off spinner Wingnut (4-29) and leggie Sanket (3-22), with Steve Pullen picking up two catches and two stumpings. The total was chased for the loss of 5 wickets, The second game of the season was called off at the last minute by Potters Bar, who only managed 8 games in the entire season…….. The first big game was against last season’s promotion rivals Flitwick. I won a toss I would rather have lost and chose to bat. Zaf (22) and Crocker started well against erratic but quick bowling, and Claw (30) continued the excellent start before falling at 103-2. Wingnut and Crocker then put on 147 runs in 14 overs before a tired Crocker was bowled for 111, his maiden century. We declared on 263-4, (Wingnut 56*). The chase was never attempted with Flitwick reaching 155-7. Next up a young St Margaretsbury III team were bowled out for 130. Darshan took 5 for 14 and debutant Stefan Gannon bowled 7 overs, 6 maidens, 1 for 1! The Village innings started with the ball clanging off Claw’s ‘Goochie’ designer helmet. Tennis ball bounce and two lively young bowlers reduced us to 32-3 but Dan Butcher, Naz and Darshan steadied the ship and the total was reached 6 down. Our next opponents, Chipperfield Clarendon IIIs, ground it out to 161-6. Nut bowled a probably never to be repeated 18 over stint of seam bowling with 9 maidens, 3 for 40. The erratic Chipperfield bowling attack faced Lee Crocker (100*) in devastating form with Zaf 40 not out. Southgate Compton IIs were dispatched next. In an ill-tempered game, we were bowled out for 208 with Southgate Compton scoring 122 all out in reply (Nut 5-31). With six games gone we were undefeated and going well. Our next game against Preston IIIs was rain affected, a rarity this season. Preston scored 163-5, leaving us 32 overs to chase on a soggy pitch. Crocker bashed a lively 52 with Naz (32) supporting. Crocker fell at 84-4 and Naz was out (103-5) with the game still winnable (60 required from 15 overs). Wickets tumbled and we were all out for 134 for our first defeat. We faced third placed Ickleford IIIs on another rainy Saturday. Openers Sunny Raval and Lee Crocker were both expensively dropped behind early on, before producing an opening partnership of 183 from 27 overs with Crocker out on 81. Sunny reached 100 before the declaration on 215-3 from 32 overs leaving Ickleford 40 overs. Opening with spin brought an early breakthrough (7/1), after which stubborn partnerships took the

score to 74-2 and 98-3 before Naz twice took two wickets in an over (100-6). Ickleford (113-9) held out for the draw (Naz 6-29). Lowly Ware IIs were bowled out for 100 (Downes 5-10) and were dispatched without loss by Piers and Zaf in 22 overs. The halfway mark in the season was against Holtwhite Trinibis III on a blazingly hot afternoon at the Village. We once again won the toss and batted with the aim of making the opposition sweat. Their opening bowlers bowled unchanged for 28 overs. Piers scored 44 and Darshan played a Boycott-esque innings of 51 before Sanket bashed a quickfire 54 to post 191-6. Holtwhites chased this for the loss of 6 wickets to send us to our second defeat. Potton Town IIs were comfortably beaten, scoring 161, with Nut (8-47) and Stefan (2-32) sharing the wickets. The total was rapidly knocked off by Naz (63), Zaf (46*) and Dan Penny (33*). Nineteenth placed Northampton Exiles IIIs bizarrely put us into bat on another scorcher with Claw scoring an unbeaten 83 to guide us to 246-6 in 39 overs, with the Exiles bowled out for 125. Shenley Village IIs opening pair put on 66 but nobody else got into double figures as they posted 121. With rain forecast the total was rapidly achieved with storm clouds gathering. We entered August in second place but still having to play the 1st, 4th and 6th placed teams. The first of the big games was at home against fourth placed Hatfield Crusaders IVs. We won the toss and put them in to face Birju Lukka, dragged from the golf course to play his first game of the season and Naz, who between them bowled a strangling 24 overs to leave the opposition on 60-6. Hatfield eventually finished on 119 all out. With our line up containing 9 batsmen, 10 if you count Darshan, we felt quietly confident but contrived to make a game of it. Wickets fell to the tight Hatfield attack, but at 60-3 victory still looked straightforward. Sanket and Dan Penny fell in rapid succession, followed by Zaf retiring having top edged into his cheek to leave us effectively at 66-6. Having Naz come in at 7 is a luxury we don’t always have, and together with Dave Flavell and Nut, after Naz was out, the game was won. Letchworth Garden City Vs batted with the aim of achieving 10 points, eventually falling one run short after some interesting umpiring in the final over. Richard Downes took his second Michelle of the season. Zaf (39) and Crocker (55) put on 116 for the first wicket before falling in consecutive overs. Piers and Darshan (33*) finished the game off for a fifth successive win. Our second big game was away to Botany Bay IIIs, having discovered that morning, that only 3 teams would be promoted this season. Botany Bay chose to bat with rain threatening, but made little headway against Darshan and Naz. Darshan had halved his run up and bowled twice as effectively, with Botany Bay on 76-5 after 30 overs. Spinners Burton and Raza Kazmi finished the convicts off, to restrict the home side to 128. Naz volunteered to open with Crocker to form one of the more destructive opening partnerships in Div 11. The opening bowlers second and final over was duly sent for 18 by Naz, who was out for 35 out of 48 in the 7th over. Ben Crocker joined his brother

and showed himself to be the more talented cricketer of the family, scoring a rapid 26. Both Crockers and Zaf were eventually out with Condiment O’Brien and Flavell finishing off to achieve another vital win with only 10 players. With torrential rain forecast for the weekend, Knebworth Park Vs conceded on the Friday, much to the annoyance of our promotion rivals. With all other matches rained off that weekend, we leapfrogged Cockfosters to reach top spot for the first time. The penultimate game was the Division decider against Cockfosters. Cockfosters put us into bat, and with a strong line-up we aimed to bat them out of the game. Openers Zaf and Crocker made steady progress against the excellent bowling, reaching 52-2 from 18 overs. Claw and Pete Jaffe pushed the total to 94 in the 28th over before a collapse of England proportions saw the next four wickets fall for only two runs. Flavell, Burton and Raval dragged the total to 142 all out from 46 overs, a disappointing total after such a good start. Nut took a wicket in the first over, though Cockfosters dug in to 56 before the fall of the second wicket. Wickets continued to fall and the game was still in the balance at 87-5. One further wicket fell before their opening bowler bashed Cockfosters over the line with a cavalier but not chanceless 26 to put Cockfosters back in top spot. However our promotion was assured with the 12 points gained. The final game was against Radlett Vs, who won the toss, batted and reached 181 from 47 overs. This total was chased for the loss of 7 wickets, with Crocker (38), Piers (31) and Claw (28) all contributing before Jon (30*) and Lawrence Bird got us over the line for 7 down to secure 2nd place. Mission accomplished. I enjoyed my first season as captain and learned a lot from the more experienced members of the team and from the varied dramas throughout the season. We benefited from a settled side that had strength in depth in both batting and bowling, with a team full of potential match winners who provided almost too many options at times. Lee Crocker had a wonderful season with the bat, scoring two centuries and a total of 548 runs, and combined his natural style with a more sensible approach which paid dividends. Zaf and Claw provided the more conventional opening options and always got us off to a good start. The middle order of Sanket, Naz, Nut and Dan Penny provided a good blend of acceleration and nous. Steve Pullen was way too quick and had some frustrating decisions from sleepy square leg umpires. He was ably backed up by Zaf. The bowling was largely shared between Darshan, Naz and Nut with Downesy, Sanket, Crocker and Flavell supporting where necessary. Jon Bird also bowled extremely well with little reward at the start of the season. In the end, 10 teams from Division 11 were promoted, so our main rivals for promotion will probably be the same as the last two years.

MHV 3rd ELEVEN 2013 SEASON REPORT So where to start… A topsy turvy season that in terms of availability, certainly resembled past seasons, with the third team going out with less than 11 players on a fairly consistent basis. The fact that we ended up using a total of 38 players indicated how difficult it was to get any consistency. A 7th placed finish was probably a fair reflection, with a combination of the good, the bad and the ugly all appearing at various points throughout the season. We started the season with a good win against Met Police Bushey. Ali Sayed top scored with 82 out of a total of 173 and when the opposition were 80 without loss in reply, a convincing loss was on the cards. A vital breakthrough by Ali, followed by a six wicket haul from debutant Faiz (6-41) resulted in a 20 run win. We then hung on for a draw against Redbourn (229-5) with Shahme (46) providing the biggest resistance in a total of 158-8. A second victory against Stevenage followed. With only 8 players (as usual) by 12.55 the options of who to open the bowling alongside Ajay weren't obvious. Farhan had gone for 40 from 2 overs the week before (only managing to pitch one ball out of 17) and Ammar had been a little wayward on his previous bowl. I decided to go with my gut instinct and threw the ball to Shaun who had yet to bowl this year. It turned out to be an inspired decision with Shaun (1-13 from 8 overs) bowling his first 5 overs without going for a single run off the bat. Seven dropped catches meant we kept them in the game far longer than we should have (142 all out) however we continued to bowl good lines and lengths. A solid opening partnership of 75 between Piers and myself put us in a good position and despite the expected late wobble we got over the line (143-6) with Ajay (6-35) the clear man of the match. With two wins and a draw we were looking fairly solid. Some shocking availability meant that we put out a skeleton side at Watford in the next game and were comprehensively beaten by 5 wickets, with only Matin and Joe Sheridan making double figures in a total of 98 and a number of players guilty of throwing their wickets away. A solid victory against a young Rickmansworth side gave Andrew Godfrey his first wickets at senior level. His spell of 2-17 in 6 overs was comfortably his best of the season with plenty of late swing proving too much for the batsmen. The more overs Andy gets under his belt, the more he will improve and it was good to see him play both days at the weekend on a number of occasions. In his first season at a senior level Andy was solid and had more than an impressive first season showing he was definitely not out of his depth. A couple of cancelled games sandwiched the victory at Rickmansworth and with victories against Hemel Hempstead (memorable because it resembled a parallel universe with Matin securing a run-out and Shaun taking two catches) and Old Albanians, we were in a good position having still only lost one game all season. The game against Broxborne showed our batting frailties again recovering from both 0/2 and 2/4 to post a semi-competitive total (143), with Pete (81) starting the best run of scores seen at the Village all season. A tight start to the innings (28-0 off 20 overs) wasn’t the catalyst we hoped it would be, with Broxbourne sneaking home by 4 wickets, with two of their colts batting very well at the end of the game. A very satisfying win against Berkhamsted followed, especially after they only managed 159-7 (Downesy 5-64) on a complete road. Yet again we collapsed to 0-2 before Pete continued his hot streak with yet another fifty seeing us home by knocking off the last 24 runs from just 8 balls. We then proceeded to have two poor games, failing to bowl out a 10 man Cheshunt side after posting 204 and another poor batting display (93 all out) against Bushey after doing well to bowl them out for 208. The story of our season then happened in August with great wins against Preston (188-4) by four wickets (Jaffe 67, J Bird 65) and Harpenden (163) by 48 runs (Jaffe 80, L Bird 64) after Chalky took the final wicket with the penultimate ball

of the game. This was followed by our poorest availability of the season against Bentley Heath when we were forced to play two guys who had never played cricket before and still only had 10 players. Needless to say we heavily lost by 9 wickets. A consolation win against Hatfield and Crusaders followed in September with Jonny Gahan making his maiden Village fifty and Mike Wilson picking up his first wickets for the club, before we conceded our first game in 3 years on the final day of the season, with just 3 players available for the 3rd team. Of the top 6 teams we were comprehensively beaten by three of them (not scoring above 100 in any of the three matches), had one game rained off, had held on for a draw in one and beaten Harpenden. It’s difficult to say “what if…” but the fact was that our ‘big’ fixtures happened to coincide with our poorest availability – and this is part and parcel of being the bottom team at any side unfortunately. Overall a good season – finishing 7th is nothing to be sniffed at, but if we are to grow as a club, we have to increase our playing membership. Get your mates down and tell them what a great club it is, tell your colleagues about it and help the club move forward. If we don’t do it, it’s only going to get harder to continue to put three sides out. My thanks go to Chalky for captaining when I wasn’t around and for all the players that played this season. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes by Smudger, Ted, Pete, Legs, Downesy and Chalky which often goes unrecognised so many thanks guys. Player of the Season: Pete Jaffe

MILL HILL VILLAGE COLTS REPORT FOR 2013 Last year saw another excellent step forward in the progression and development of our young players and the section as a whole. The Under 11s reached an area cup final, beating some good sides along the way. Playing a very strong Winchmore Hill side in the final, they made an excellent start to their innings, reaching 40 without loss after 7 overs. At which point, the opposition brought on a very skilful young leg spinner, who bowled with excellent line, length, flight and considerable turn. Never having had to play such bowling before, it brought about a rapid collapse of the top and middle order. The final total of 78 was never enough to challenge the strongest side in the area but it was a very creditable performance and superb cup run nonetheless. Following promotion from Division 3 in the previous season, the U11s also finished a very creditable second in their Division 2 league, missing out on top spot by a single point, as a result of a thrilling tied game early in the season. The Under 13s also competed well in their Division and produced a number of notable performances, individually and collectively. Much of the Under 13 team was supplemented with players from the U11 squad, which bodes well for the future. There was a long list of excellent performances from all the players selected. Everyone who played made a meaningful contribution to wins and to good team performances, in one or more of the matches they took part in. Without exception the players representing Mill Hill Village Colts teams are a credit to the club. They are learning to play competitive cricket in an appropriate fair and friendly spirit. Some of the younger lads will remain in the U11s squad for another season or two and the experience and confidence already gained will stand them in good stead. Deven, Rishi, Gabriel and Raiyan are among those who have already performed with credit at this age level and they will form the nucleus of the 2014 squad. Vayu deserves an honourable mention for the considerable number of runs he scored and the solidity he brought to the start of many innings. Zaki, Jamanvir, Ronit and Zamaan all showed themselves to have the makings of fine cricketers and will not struggle to make the progression to the higher age groups. Nikhil, Ryo, Alex & Max all showed tremendous improvement over the past year having come to cricket a few years later than some of their team mates. Hard work, endeavour and enthusiasm will carry you a long way in this game and these are just some of the strengths they exhibit every time they take the field. Ikjyot, Ben and Karan are the most experienced members of the team and their cricketing talents were evident frequently throughout the season. This season we will be looking for them to provide match winning contributions even more often. Tommy Smith was named U11 players of the season (It’s a fix – Ed) after a very consistent run of contributions with both bat and ball. Obaydh Khan richly deserved his Under 13 player of the season award following a rapid improvement in technique and attacking intent, resulting in a highly successful run scoring season.

Despite some of the players in the under 15s have little experience of playing cricket at the start of the season, the team was still able to produce some strong performances against good teams, culminating in 2 victories over Southgate Adelaide. Patrick McGuigan and Frazer Archibald performed well with the bat while Andrew Godfrey, Shiva Bhaget and Jamie Whitcher were the pick of the bowlers. Neil Smith and Joe Chennells also played well, even though this was their first season of club cricket. When numbers were low the team was grateful for the contributions of Tommy and Ikjot Jamie Whitcher, Andrew Godfrey, Frazer Archibald and Patrick McGuigan all went on to feature in adults’ cricket and it is hoped that they will continue to do so. Thanks to Graham and all coaches for all their help and to Lee for collecting the money! As before, we will have Level One and Level Two Coaches (all CRB checked by the ECB) training the boys and girls this season and we are looking forward to even better performances and further success. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Welcome to Mill Hill Village Sports Club Ltd - a Clubmark and Standard Charter Club. Once again on behalf of all the members, I would like to thank all the many club officers and volunteers for their hard work and various duties, as without all of these people, clubs like ours would not exist. Special thanks to Lawrence for his work in gaining Clubmark status and for revealing his talent in the kitchen by producing an excellent Christmas dinner. To Phil for his many roles including compiling this fixture book, coaching, arranging fixtures, lettings and, and, and….. We shall soon be losing two of our stalwarts in Graeme and Sharon Burton, as they are moving to Sharon’s home country, Australia. I am sure you will all join me in wishing them and the girls all the best for their future there. Remember: The only prayers that are never answered, are those said on a cricket field !

Ted Kelly

The Village in Winter

Our Footballers, both Adult and Junior have suffered a long wet winter with many cancelled games. The 1st XI had a couple of good cup runs and are challenging for promotion. The 2nd XI turned around a shaky start to bed themselves into their new Division very well. Our youth football is now completing its 6th year and is looking good for the future. Home games are played on a Sunday morning at the club, with training taking place on Saturday mornings. If you wish to play, coach, referee or assist in any way, please get in touch with any member of the cricket committee, who will point you in the right direction.
