Thank you to all of our parents and community members for assisting us in the education of our children. ANZAC DAY CEREMONY All parent and community members are invited to attend our ANZAC Ceremony being held tomorrow at 10am. The ceremony will be followed by a shared morning tea from 10:30-11am (please bring a plate). SCHOOL PHOTOS Tomorrow we will all need to make sure we have combed our hair and practised our smiles for our annual school photos. Please ensure your child arrives with their photo form if they have not already returned it to school or that you have completed your order online. Due to our ANZAC Ceremony being held in the morning with a morning tea to follow, we suggest that you send your child to school in their blue shirt and have their white shirt in a plastic bag. We will ensure children are in their white shirt for our ANZAC Ceremony then back in their blue shirt for morning tea in an effort to keep them as clean as possible for the photos. IMPORTANCE OF READING We all know that reading to and with your child is fundamental to their academic success. Research shows that learning to read is one of the most important factors in school success and that early exposure to books and stories substantially contributes to success in early literacy. We pride ourselves on our home reading program and thank our parents for their support in this. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT … cont

ATTENDANCE

We all know the importance of sending your child to school regularly, however, unfortunately our attendance as a whole school for Term 1 is lower than we would like. I would like to remind parents that if your child is away, we require you to notify the classroom teacher or front office with an expla-nation. We understand that if your child is unwell they need to be kept at home, but we currently have 27% of absences for Term 1 unexplained or unauthorised. Well done to our Kindy students who have had the highest attendance rate so far with 98.4%, followed by our Year 6 students with 97.1%. Con-gratulations to Riley White, Molly McCuish and Tommy McNamara on your 100% attendance rate for Term 1 of 2017, what an outstanding effort! I wish you all a very safe and enjoyable Easter and holiday, and cannot wait to see you all back on Wednesday the 26th of April.

Kind regards

Home Reading Tips – Pause, Prompt, Praise

Helping your child work out tricky words is easy with this effective technique. The ‘Pause, Prompt, Praise’ method or ‘The Three P’s’ allows you to assist your child with tricky words while teaching them how to self-monitor and correct themselves while reading.

Here’s how…

Firstly, set aside ten minutes of distraction-free time to listen to your child read. Sit next to your child so you can read the book as well. Make sure the book they want to read is appropriate for their reading level. It is better to start with easier books to build up your child’s confidence.

Pause

Wait quietly while your child attempts to read the words on the page. If your child is strug-gling to work out what a word is, pause for 5 seconds to let them figure it out for themselves.

Prompt

If they still haven’t worked out the word after 5 seconds, ‘prompt’ them with a couple of suggestions on how they could figure out the word, such as:

do they recognise any of the letters in the word and can they say the sounds that go with them?

can they break the word up into chunks, for example ‘can–dle’?

can they try reading again from the start of the sentence, or continue reading the rest of the sentence? (This way they will see the context the word is in and it might help them to understand what it is.)

are there any clues from the pictures? For example, if your child reads “The mean put a hat on his head”, you could say “I don’t think the word is ‘mean’, look at the picture, who has a hat on his head?”

If your child still has troubles with the word after two ‘prompts’, say it for them and encourage them to move on with their reading, “The word is ‘man’, let’s keep going.”

Praise

Support your child’s reading with positive reinforcement. Saying things like “Your reading is getting so much better, I’m really proud of you!” boosts your child’s self-confidence and will help them improve.

Try to make this special reading time with your child enjoyable. Talk about the book with your child. Discuss the characters, plot and pictures as this will help boost their reading comprehension and help them develop a love of reading.
