BiographiesAmbrose Akinmusire, TrumpetAmbrose Akinmusire’s career has beena slow and steady process. Born andraised in Oakland, California, he was amember of the Berkeley High SchoolJazz Ensemble when SaxophonistSteve Coleman stopped by the schoolto conduct a workshop. Colemanimmediately heard promise in theyoung trumpeter and eventually hired19-year old Akinmusiere to join hisband on an extensive European tour.

The experience proved life-changing.Coleman—considered by many to bethe spiritual godfather of the currentcreative jazz scene—challengedAkinmusire on and off the stage.“Ambrose, what’s your concept?”Akinmusire remembers Colemanasking him on a train ride throughGermany. “Concept? I’m 19, I don’tneed a concept. It’ll just come oneday,” shrugged Akinmusire, raising thesaxophonist’s ire. “He really laid in onme. I’ll never forget it,” he recalls.“You’ve got to start thinking about itnow,” Coleman told him.

Akinmusire took the advice to heartand returned to his studies at theManhattan School of Music determinedto discover his own voice. Afterreturning to the West Coast to pursuea master’s degree at the University ofSouthern California, Akinmusire wenton to attend the Thelonious MonkInstitute of Jazz in Los Angeles, anexperience that began to bring hisquest into clearer focus.

In 2007 Akinmusire won theprestigious Thelonious MonkInternational Jazz Competition and theCarmine Caruso International JazzTrumpet Solo Competition (two of themost prestigious jazz competitions inthe world) and released his debutrecording Prelude…To Cora. It was alsoduring this time that Bruce Lundvall,President of Blue Note Records, noticed him.

Akinmusire and his quintet beganrecording his Blue Note debut albumWhen the Heart Emerges Glistening inSeptember 2010. The album’s openingtrack “Confessions to My UnbornDaughter” immediately establishesseveral of the quintet’s hallmarksincluding their striking juxtaposition ofbombast and beauty, with searingsolos turning on a dime to reveal

moments of touching tenderness, and the profound frontline interplaybetween Akinmusire and Smith.“He and I never have any musicalconversations,” says Akinmusire. “It’samazing, it feels like he’s part of mybrain and I’m part of his. I know exactlywhat he’s thinking, what note he’sgoing to end on, when he’s going toplay something, when he’s going tostop.” The way the two intuitively tradelines back-and-forth, finishing eachother’s musical sentences, is surely aresult of the 12 years that they’ve beenmaking music together.

Walter Smith III, Tenor SaxWalter Smith III began playing thesaxophone at the age of seven in hishometown of Houston, at Houston’sHigh School for the Performing andVisual Arts. In 1998, Smith received aClifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellowshipfrom IAJE and NFAA; the NFAA YoungTalent Award; a full tuition scholarshipto attend Berklee College of Music; anda United States Presidential Scholar inthe Arts medal. Walter graduatedfrom Berklee in 2003 with a degree inMusic Education.

Hissophomore release “Live in France”,was released in 2009 and receivedcritical acclaim. His most recent album,“III”, was released 2010 and was the #3best seller on itunes in the U.S. for itsfirst week. The recording featuresAmbrose Akinmusire, Jason Moran,Joe Sanders, and Eric Harland.

Over the past few years, besidesleading a quintet, Walter is/has been amember of several groups (recordingand touring) including the TerenceBlanchard Group, Eric Harland’sQuintet, Ambrose Akinmusire’sQuintet, Christian Scott’s Group, theSean Jones Sextet, Jason Moran’s BigBandwagon (In My Mind: Monk at TownHall), and the Christian McBrideSituation Band.

Sam Harris, Piano“He plays from a place of sincerity thatsets him apart from his counterparts. His willingness to straddle the fence ofjazz piano history allows him to createa fresh take on jazz ... I will be watchingand listening to his every move.”

—Jason Moran

Sam Harris’s life in music began at theage of two, when, thanks to incredible
