Your CMC Denver Group trip leaders put much time and effort into planning, scheduling and carrying out the many trips available for your pleasure. Their main reward is satisfaction in helping others enjoy the great outdoors up close and personal. But are you a positive part of the experience? Are you a conscientious A or B hiker? Do you help make the trip a success?

Let’s review the responsibilities you, the hiker, have to meet in order to contribute to a successful trip. Score one point for each action you do on a regular basis, and then compare your score with the table at the end of this article. Is there room for improvement?

A. On the trail1. Be prepared with proper clothing and equipment handy for each portion of the hike.2. Be self-reliant; know what all to bring and know how to use it.3. Be able to complete the trip.4. Pay attention to the leader whenever he/she speaks to the group. There may be lessons to be learned!5. Adjust to the dynamics of the group. We help “never-ever,” beginner, intermediate and advanced-level telemark skiers learn and/or improve their telemark skiing skills and teach them how to transition those skills into the backcountry for more enjoyable adventures. If you currently venture into the backcountry on touring skis, have witnessed telly skiers carving sweet s-turns down slopes or thru the trees, and have wondered to yourself “can I do that”, well we’re here to tell you that yes, you can and we’ll help you get there! You’ll attend an evening full of telemark skiing information on Tuesday Jan 4, 2011, and spend the next 4 Saturdays—2 at ski areas and 2 in the backcountry—learning and practicing those skills. Prerequisites: You want to be sure you’re conditioned for backcountry skiing; so if you don’t have a Denver Group moderate ski rating (or equivalent) at registration, we strongly recommend that you

attend and successfully complete a Telemark Ski School qualifying trip. These instructor-led ski tours (no telemark skiing on these trips) are offered on these dates. December 11, and 18. You pick one. To sign up for a qualifying trip follow this easy procedure: 1) register in the school; 2) pick a trip date; 3) call the CMC office after November 15 to sign up. Look for us under “Telemark Ski School.” This is YOUR year for telemark skiing!

Congratulations to the HAMS class of 2010

I wish to offer congratulations to this years very strong participants in the Denver Group’s 2010 High Altitude Mountaineering School held last January and February. Many of the students joined in the planning of our Mt. Rainier graduation climb in July and made successful climbs to the summit on July 9th.

This was one of the largest HAMS classes in recent years with 19 students. They were supported by a dedicated group of instructors whose expertise helped bring the subject matter to life with very practical hands-on, in-the-field, instruction, and not always in cooperative weather, which lent real world experience to class.

The following is the list of the 2010 HAMS class: Emily Anderson, John and Renata Collard, Brenda Czaban, Gene Dionne, Emily Drummond, Teri Horvath, Karl Johnson, Sharon Kratze, John Lundberg, Donna Lynne, Debbie Markham, John Martersteck, Dave Miller, Sarah Nelson, Norm Numerhof, Jeff Speake, Steve Sprowles and John Surette.

Without the volunteer instructors this class simply would not be possible. This year’s Senior Instructors were Bob Dawson and Dave Covill whose extensive climbs of high peaks around the world provided the expertise that makes this course one of the best the CMC offers. Assisting them were Sharon Adams, Rob Cobb, Gabe Colburn, Greg Olson, Ken Gurvin, and Lisa Herter. In addition we had Sheryl Costello, Tom Urban, Tom Creighton, Jerry Allen, and Iain Saunderson provide support for many of the field days. Also, our success was in no small part because of the support of the Membership Office and Facilities Staff.

So please offer your congratulations to all mentioned here when you see them. And remember there’s snow somewhere above 18,000 ft. and the HAMS Seminars, a prerequisite for the School) begin October 7th. Please go to the HAMS website at www. cmchams.org for the latest information on upcoming events and next years school.

October Downhiller Slope NotesWinter is fast approaching so it is time to start thinking skiing….coming up this year for the Downhillers will be our weekend day trips plus a trip to Wolf Creek in December and a cabin in Frisco for a week the end of January….

Winter Downhill Ski Trip to Wolf Creek. Ski the best snow on planet earth this December!! The plan is to leave Denver on Thursday, December 9, early for those who can, after work for the rest. We will ski Wolf Creek Friday, Saturday and Sunday, then drive home Sunday afternoon Dec 12. Lodging will be at Foothills Lodge and Cabins, in South Fork CO. http://www.foothillslodgeandcabins.com/lodgestylecabins.html The accomodations are simple, but clean and nice. Each lodge-style-cabin has a propane fire place, common room, and full kitchen along with two rooms, each with two twin beads, so four people will be sharing the common rooms and bathroom. Every effort will be made to keep cabins single gender, but it will depend on who signs up. A single room can be arranged for an extra cost. One meal will be provided in the leader’s cabin on Friday evening. Participants will be responsible for the rest of their meals and their share of transportation. Sign up early, as rooms will be reserved only after enough people sign up to fill a room, and rooms go fast at Wolf Creek. Please contact the leader, Stephania Bunka to arrange carpooling and for more information…[email protected]. So, if you want to sign up, go to the CMC web site, under "Programs", then "Adventure Travel", then "Winter Downhill Ski trip Wolf Creek" or contact the CMC office. The total cost for all of this will be $330, this includes lodging, lift tickets and one meal. Non members can attend for an additional $20 fee,

Week in Frisco Tired of the drive back and forth from Denver to the mountains? Take a break and spend a week in the mountains (or one night, two nights, etc). We are arranging to have a cabin in Frisco that will sleep 8-10 people per night with a cost of somewhere between $40-55 per night. Skiers can then choose from several ski areas. Backcountry and cross country skiers and snowshoers are also welcome. Watch for more details. Once confirmed the cabin will be posted on the website. Or let Rich Homol or Linda James know that you are interested and we will keep you posted. [email protected] or [email protected].

Trip leaders needed…..if you are interested in leading day trips or overnight trips or have questions about what is involved, contact Linda James…[email protected]…..more leaders mean many more trips being offered to a variety of ski areas.
