Shop Talk—As sug-gested by Emil Berndt

Question —What is the voltage generated by the Model T Ford magneto? How can the lights and horn be operated on both magneto and on battery when the magneto generates al-ternating current while the battery supplies di-rect current?

Answer — The flywheel magneto used on the Model lT Ford was generally known as an 18-volt magneto. The voltage varied, however, with the speed of the motor. For example, at 200 motor RPM’s the voltage was five. At 1200 RPM’s the voltage reached 26.2 The 18-volt range was reached at about 800 RPM’S when a Model T Ford was traveling about 20 miles an hour in high gear. The headlight system de-signed to operate from this magneocalled for two 9-volt light bulbs, connected in series, so as to absorb 18 volts. The later Model T Ford, equipped with generators, used 6-volt bulbs, operating from generator and battery only. The magneto on these later Model T8s was used for ignition only, after starting the motor on battery current. The answer to your second question is that a light bulb is one piece of electrical equipment that will funt ionon either direct or alternating current. The 9-volt bulbs operating from a 6-volt battery would be, however, quite dim.

Page 6: Mile High Chapter of the Model T Ford...Membership: Gary Giarratano Treasurer: Jessica Canino 8031 W. 78th Circle 4169 Osceola St. Arvada, CO 80005 Denver, CO 80212 (303) 467 (303)

Here’s a chance for you, the reader, to make your views known.

We invite comment to the two topics below. I’m trying to find controversial topics, pieces and opinions that spark in-terest and maybe make a few sparks fly. Let’s see how these do. Remember, email [email protected] or [email protected] with your fire.

First, a soft one to get us started:

1. Last month’s issue had the following recipe: Cranberry-Apple Salad Cook 1 Cup Cranberries until they pop. Add 1 Cup Sugar, Cool. Dissolve 1 package Lemon Jello. Cool and stir into cranberries then add:; 1/2 cup Diced Cel-ery, 1/2 cup nuts, 1 cup shredded apples. Do you have a better cranberry recipe? Send it in! Does Jello have any place at your holiday table? Enquiring minds want to know! Maybe you are satisfied, like I am, with getting a festive cylinder of cranberry sauce out of the can with those nice decorative rings already molded on? Then let us hear that!

Now for something a little tougher:

2. Here are recommendations for winter storage from Hagerty. Are they Model T-worthy? Do you agree? Disagree? Have your own tips to add? Speak up—we’re dying to know!

• Check the condition of the coolant with test strips or a hydrometer to ensure it is still in serviceable

condition. • Change the oil and filter, run the engine to temperature to distribute the fresh oil throughout the

engine, and boil off any water that was in the crankcase before shutting the ignition off for the sea-son. Come spring, take the first drive on this oil and then change it again.

• There are two options for ensuring your treads will be ready come spring—overinflation (5-10 lb.), or placing the car on jack stands.

• To keep your fuel from absorbing moisture, top up the tank prior to putting the car in storage. Use ethanol-free fuel if possible.

• Use some type of storage charger on the battery and pay a little more up front for a brand-name version.

Of course, some folks don’t worry about storing their T for the winter. “I thought I would take the T out for a spin today. It did really well despite not having chains which I now want. This was my first time in this kind of snow,

fun for sure.” Mark Bailey

President’s Letter Friends of the Model T: 2019 is soon done and next year is around the corner. In the coming weeks the 2020 Board will sort out how to manage next year’s schedule. We currently have 5 volunteers for next year. We also need a Webmaster beginning early next year. If you can free up a few hours each month you will find serving on the Board is a lot of fun. We take care of Chapter business and talk a whole lot of T. Please consider calling or emailing Mike Zepp, Sharon Miller, Jessie Canino, Gary Giarratano or Gerry Hibbs, our current 2020 Roster and checking out the Board. Please contact me or Heidi Patton if you would like to know more about the Webmaster job. Heidi is at [email protected] or 303 243- 4776. In the last year we had quite a few events that continued our efforts to educate the public about the Model T Ford and the beginnings of the U.S. Auto Industry. We also enjoyed some nice meals togeth-er and learned how to take care of a T. 2019 was a year of loss. Goodbye and Godspeed to all our friends and loved ones who have passed away. They will be in our hearts when we come together with others who share this loss. I hope your holidays are filled with joy. Brian Golden

Model T Ford Club of America: Membership in the MTFCA is required of all Mile High Chapter club officers, and is encouraged for all club members. Mile High Chapter of the MTFCA: The Model T Ford Club of America (MTFCA) was founded on December 12, 1965. The Mile High Chapter was formed on January 29, 1967. Both clubs were estab-lished to encourage interest in the Model T Ford and its history, and are dedicated to providing information, assistance, history and direction to all interested parties. A yearly membership to the Mile High Chapter is $30 for the entire family at the same address, in-cluding a subscription to the Mile High Chapter’s newsletter. Watch the newsletter (you’re reading it) and website (www.milehighpedalpushers.com) for meeting times.

Ford Scramble: Send in your T quote

([email protected]) for the Ford Scramble. Our last puzzle featured an ex-cerpt from a British WW I soldier: “She withstood everything in the field and above all was, and still is, the last and only car to survive until the cessation of hostilities.” If you trust the figures in this article, https://

silodrome.com/history-model-t-ford/ , around 430,000 Model T’s were employed in The Great War. This Month’s Scramble: This is short, so there are a couple of pretty good hints below. Block them if you want a greater challenge. Hint #1: This is a poem from a Ford ad. (It’s from the 30’s, but you will forgive me a little fudging, won’t you?) The dashes mark line breaks. (It is not a terrific poem; more like the stuff I put out.) Hint #2: It has a holiday theme.

THE REAR END

Personal Stories are Preferred! This is the last entry for 2019, but keep those essays coming! Our readers like to hear your stories. This month Gail Dins writes . . .

HOW DID I GET HERE? Approximately 6 years ago I was given the keys to Little Eva. At the time I was in charge of mainte-nance at the Arvada Elks building on Yukon St. No one there had a clue how to even start this Model T. A past member of the Lodge and a member of our Model T club, Bob Bastion, passed away and willed his beloved T to the Elks, which he had named after his departed wife. My experience with a Model T was limited at best. I’m a carpenter by trade and a half/mooned mechanic. I did get it running and was able to drive down the street slowly, with a lot of trepidation. Now that it ran, errati-cally, I started a search for help. My mailman gave me a name of a gent he knew, and he in turn gave me a name of a gent he knew, and at last, after some more gents, Rick Holdaway answered his phone. I trailered Eva to Rick’s house and under his inspection of coils-spark plugs-adjustments of all kinds, to my sur-prise she began to purr. Little Eva is a tractor built in the twenties and featured in the May/June 2019 Vintage Ford publica-tion. She has a 1921 engine. These tractors were also called mules or totes. It could have been built at the south Broadway plant and used to move materials and then at the Gates plant, rumor has it. The more questions I made by phone calls to Rick, the more times he suggested I join the Model T Club. I agreed.* His next suggestion was I might entertain joining him at the Forney Museum for some volunteer work. I did.* To this day I look forward to every Monday and the unique vehicles we can access and work on. Not long after working at the Forney they put up for sale a few of the vehicles that were on display and in storage. A 1926 Model T Coupe was one of those ready for sale. I couldn’t resist. An engine ex-change with another T on display was required as the engine in the ‘26 was dead. A new front end and eventually a new rear end has given me a secure feeling to drive about town. A little history of this T: In 1960 it was purchased by J.D. Forney, yup—that Forney, from James Pat-ton of Omaha Nebraska for the sum of $125.00. J.D drove the T for a year plus and then put it in his Museum where it has been for the last 55 years until I purchased it. *Rick, please suggest to Gail a large endowment to the newsletter staff. Ed.
