GENERAL SAFETY

1. LISTEN carefully to all instructions before you proceed with any activity. Ask for clarification if you are not sure what to do.

2. Never taste, smell, or touch chemicals (even if you think it is water) unless you have permission from your teacher.

3. Always wear safety goggles and aprons, and keep long hair tied back.

4. Do not touch any part of your face unless you have thoroughly cleaned your hands with soap and water.

5. Follow directions for safe disposal of chemicals. Never pour harmful chemicals down the sink.

6. Approach laboratory work with maturity. Never run, push, or engage in horseplay or practical jokes of any kind.

7. At the end of a class, always WASH your equipment and put away, WASH your desk or counter top, and WASH your hands.

ACCIDENT PROCEDURES:

1. Report ALL accidents or injuries, and all breakage or spills, no matter how minor, to the teacher.

2. If a chemical spills on your skin or clothing, notify the teacher and then wash it off immediately with plenty of cool water. Use the safety shower in the prep room if necessary.

3. If a chemical gets into your eyes or on your face, tell the teacher and then wash immediately at the eyewash fountain with plenty of water. Wash for at least 15 minutes. A single eyewash is in the classroom, and the double eyewash is in the prep lab.

4. If you spill a chemical, tell the teacher and then clean up after instructions from the teacher.

5. If you break glassware, tell the teacher then use a dustpan and brush to pick up broken glass. Do not use your bare hands. Dispose in special glass container.

The following safety symbols are used throughout Canada to identify products that can be hazardous. Make sure you know what each symbol means. Always use extra care when you see any of these symbols in the classroom or anywhere else.
